TTHIR. TO .WAKE BKAVTIFCL HOWES.
The greater part of our population are wait
ing till they can afford to haeffplff • nthomes,
forgetting that they can at no time afford to
have any other. We take the color of ojir
daily surroundings, and are happier, more -
unable, stronger to labor and firmer to endure
when those surroundings are pleasing and in
good taste. To possess these important qual
ities they need not be extensive. True beau
ty is cheaper than we think. The first charm
of a home, within and 1 without. is thorough
neatness, and this is the result of habit, not
outlay. It is oftener cheaper tnbVi 61th. Paint
the house if you can; if not, whitewash: but
in any case let it be in thorough xepafr. bet
there be no loose shingles or dangling efyp
boards, or gates hanging by a broken hinge.
These hints favor thrift as well as taste. Let
the house be sufficient!)- shaded. This will
pay in comfort, wear of furniture, and tack-of
flies. If you can afford green blinds, you chn
always afford a green tree or two, that costs
you nothing bat labor and patience, and "ill
shelter you from the sun in summer and the
wind in winter.
Plant vines of some kind about your pre to -j
ises: they are indispensable to erace; tbey
show that nature takes kindly to your home
ud has thrown her arm around it. You need
'tot resort to costly climbers; woodbine and
clematis may be had for the gathering, and
grapes and hop vines may be so trained as to
combine beauty aud profit. Let your turf be
smooth aud firm as velvet, and enforce the
death penalty upon weeds with an unsparing
hand. No man, rich or poor, can afford to
raise weeds. They cloose the richest spots,
where flowers, or fruit, or vegetables might
gfow, and send abroad their seeds as mission
aries of evil into every nook and comer. Ill
kept places always hare their vegetable Five
Points, where sin and misery are mimicked in
chickweed, burdock and nettles. A very few
flowers will suffice; a monthly rose in ahe
window, a morning-glory over the door-way,
a bright border between your kitchen garden
and the street; these add to the picture just
those tonches of color that make it pleasant
to the eye. With half a dozen cheap and com
mon kinds, your wife will take care that some
thing is always in bloom.
But flowers are gross feeders, and if you
keep no domestic animals, you fancy, perhaps,
that yon have no manure. You were never
more mistaken. Every human dwelling is a
center of fertilizing agents, mostly wasted as
times go. rich enough to make the whole plot
around it blossom like the rose. Tell the soil
that you have nothing to give it! Give it
what yon have and it will laugh in your face.
The suds from the laundry is a store of liquid
wealth. Never waste a drop of it in drains
and sewers. It is a floating currency, promis
itfg to pay roundly in grass, and vegetables,
and fruit. Invest it in your home bank, which
never suspends payment. The3egra?*v slopes
are greenbacks, whose issne is a good as gold.
Carpet sweepings are manure in a concentra
ted form. Dug into your flower borders they
weave a richer pattern than the one from
which they were worn. The old bones that
deform the premises, If buried beneath the
grape vine, will be "health to the bones" of
all their friends. Old boots and shoes, those
most unsightly wrecks, are the favorite food
of the raspberry and all its palatable kin.
Tainted brine, if such unhappily is yours, is
a treasure foT the plum trees and asparagus
bed; slacken lime with it, and it will make a
rich dressing for any garden soil. Every
household should have its compost bed, be it
only an old packing box, where woolen rags,
bits of paper, apple-parings, refuse of veget
ables, slops from the kitchen, chips and saw
dust, are storing np the elements of a glorious
growth. Let not yours be one of the homes
where all bright posibilities arrive only at
"burning instead of beauty." We have named
but a part of the fertilizers of every house
hold. Generally speaking, whatever is offen
siveto sight or smell is urging the appeal toour
revolted tastes. Bury me, and I'll do you
good.
RECREATION AND VISITING AMONG
FARMERS.
This may seem to some a very unsuitable
topic for this busy time of the year. On the
contrary, it is specially seasonable. Most far
mers make life too mnch a drudgery for them
selves and for their children. By working
hard from morning until night, and from week
to week, with no recreation, they become dull
and do not accomplish as much as they would
with a little timely relaxation, "all work and
no play makes Jack a doll boy." Nor do
they enjoy life near so well. They doubt
less say to their souls, "I must work hard
now, and lay up money against a time of need
or against old age; then I will rest and enjoy
myself." They forget that they are mean
while wearing out their faculties of enjoyment
and are acquiriug habits which will unfit them
for anything but an old age of continued toil.
Let farmers bear in mind, too, the effect of
such a life on their children.
As to the way in which farmers shall get
recreation, we are not disposed to be partic
ular. Some will choose to get it in one way,
and some in another. One very good method
is to make up an occasional pic nic. Fix on
a pleasant afternoon, and take the whole fam
ily to some neighboring grove, where the
children can romp, where the older folks can
rest, and all have a good supper. If several
iamiliot can nnite, it will be all the better.
Another way, is to make short visits to the
neighbors. 1o do this, it will not be needful
to consume a whole day ; this would be an
unnecessary loss to you and bore your neigh
bor. But seize on the broken, half days, or
even the hour or two after tea, and ride over
to neighbor A's, or neighbor D's. He will be
glad to show you his stock and his crops, and
his orchard, You will learn something from
him, and he from you. At any rate, you will
get recreation, and will return to your home
and your daily labor with new zest —.4ram
can Agriculturist.

CELEBRATED
llorse and Cattle Powders.
These Powders have proved, after a trial of sev
eral years, to be superior to any preparation of
the kind in uso. The chief superiority of these
powders arises fiorn the fact that they are compos
ed of medicities that have Laxative, Tonic abd
Purifying properties. The laxative ejects crudi
ties from the stomach and intestines, the tonic gives
strength to the system of the Horse, and the puri
fying medicines contained in them oh-ansc the
blood, and lay the foundation for a vigorous and
healthy circulation. The nse of them improves tbfe
wind, strehglhctts the appetite and gives the horse a
fine, smooth and glossy skin—thus improving the
appearance, vigor and spirit of this noble animal.
These powders are not intended, as most pow
ders are to bloat the animal, so as to give him the
appearance of being fat when not really so—but
to reinoTe the disease and promote his general
health.
These powders will strengthen the stomach and
intestines, cleanse them from offensive matter, an 1
bring them to a healthy state. Thev are a surepre
rv-jHWrn of lyniTg rr,v-r. „„„ h certain remrtrv
all diseases incident to the Horse, as Glanders,
Yellow Water, Distempers, Founder, Heaves, Sla
vering, Coughs. Fever* Loss ol Appetite and Vital
Energy, Ac.—These powders, il' used two or
three times a week, through the winter and spring,
your horses will never get the Lung Fever Coric
or Bott*. A few doses of these powders Will re
move the worst cough, on any horse, Were own
ers of horse* to feed a few of O-ese powders every
year, they might save the lives of many rain able
horses.
MILCH COWS.
The properties this powder possesses in increas
ing the quantity of milk in cows, gives it an im
portance and value which should place it in the
hands of every person keeping a cow. In fsttun -
ing cattle, it gives them an appetite, loosens their
hide, and makes them thrive much faster,
HOOS.
In all diseases of swine, as coughs, ulcers in the
lungs and liver, Ac., by putting from half a paper
to a paper of these powders in a barrel of swill, the
above diseases can be cured or entirely prevented.
By using these powders the hog cholera can he
prevented.
