Professor ickerhatn\s Lecture.
Professor Wickersham delivered a lecture in the
Presbyterian Church last Friday evening, on the
"Characteristics of an American Education," The
speaker remarked that he had made no special pre
paration for the occasion, but would present a few
thoughts in such language as would occur to him at
the time. The address was evidently unwritten, but
pleasantly and forcibly delivered. The large audi
ence listened with marked attention and interest un
til the close. We present a brief synopsis.
FlßST: —Universalityshonld be one of the eharac
teristics of American Education. It might be said
that this should be a feature of education in every
land, aud it would be well if such a consuination
could be attained. But there is a special necessity
for this in a Republic, where all are sovereigns. The
crowned heads of Europe, and all Invested with au
thority are, or ought to be thoroughly educated. —
They think, they act. they legislate for the people.—
But in America aU are rulers, and hence all should
be educated. Every voter should be able to excer
cise his intelligently. The hum
blest honest roan iu the luw has a power at the polls
great as that of the candidate for presidential hon
ors.
SECOXBLT: —American education should he free. —
This it must be if we ever hope to make it universal.
The wealthy must educate the poor. It is for their
interest to do so. Education diminishes the number
of paupers and Inmates of county prisons and pene
tentiaries. The more intelligent a community the
more valuable the property of those composing it.
The greater the fecilJities of educating our children
which a certain locality furnishes, the more desira- j
ble a resdenee in its The erection of that beautiful j

Tillage has increased the value of your property-
TOTKPLY : —American education ought to be sound
and thorough. There is too much education which
is meiely supermini. Too many Jinith their edu
cation when it is only fairly begun. Young men hur
ry through the common school academy, and college,
and are engaged in business before ai e prepar
ed for it. We ought to learn a lesson from the old
world. YouDg ladies get a little smattering'of gram
mar, history and philosophy ; learn a little French.
Spanish, or Italian, then their education is finished, j
they devote their precious time to the dissipating
novel, the sensational romance, and sit in parlors,
when they ought to be engaged in th stern duties of
life; informing their minds, and doing something
to elevate the race.
FOURTHLY :—American education should be con
servatire. Attachment to old'fbrms is not meant,
we should progress, But we should hasten slowly,
"Festina tents,"' is the scholar's motto. There is i
too much radicalism, hobby riding arrogance of o
pinion in this day. Men run oft' on this track. The
summit of earthly good is yonder. They are men of j
one idea, They think all others obtuse who do not
see just as they do or who do not exert all their
energies in precisely that direction in which they are
going with the speed of the lightning express. The
educated mah is humble. Hisrangeof vision is wide.
He moves deliberately. He considered the many
interests or his fellow-men, and seeks to advance
them all.
LASTLY :—The education of American youth should
he patriotic. Love of country should be instilled
and cultivated. We 'ask not for parlyirm. but patiot- j
ism. Our children and youth should be students of
history. They should be made familiar with the
deeds of our fathers, the experience of revolutionary
dsys-the patriotic, persevering, self sacrificing efforts
of noble men and women which resulted in the e
reetion of this Temple of Liberty which is the joy,
and glory of our land. It is pleasant to hear chil
dren express their attachment to their native land,
and speak with pride of its grand old mountains,
majestic rivers, beautiful vallies, and fertile plains, j
We like to hear them sing such national songs as
"The star spangled banner." "Yankee doodle," and
":ally round the flag boys." Let. all be patriots.
May t he American people be distinguished for their
education."universal, free, thorough, conservative,
and patriotic. Following up the chain of knowledge
link by link, may w'e all pass through the mists of
ignorance and skepticism, up to the light and glory
and of a better land.

The Secretary of the Treasury gives notice that snb
scriptions will be received for Coupon Treasury Notes,
payable three years from August 15tb. 186-1. with semi
annual interest at the rate of seven and three-tesths per
cent, per annum,—principal and interest both to be paid
in lawful money.
There notes will be convertible at the option of the
holder at maturity, into six per cent, gold bearing bonds,
payable not less than five nor more than twenty years
from their date, as the Government may elect. They
will be issued in denomination? of SSO, $lO6, S6OO, SI,OOO
and $5,000, and all subscriptions must be for fifty dollars
or some multiple of fifty dollars.
The notes will be transmitted to the owners frbe of
transportation charges as soon after the receipt of the
original Certificate of Deposit as tbey can be {irepared.
As the notes draw interest from August 15, persons
makiug deposits subsequent to that dhte must pay the in
tcrest accrued from dale of note to date of deposit:
