! UNE commenced the twenty-first year of its exis

f what younger. FAr more than twenty years, this
! jonrnal has labored in wbat its conductors have felt
Ito he the canS-- of Humanity, Justice and Free
j dom. endeavoring to uieiir rate the condition of the
j oppressed and unfortunate, to honor and tu

; promote by .11 means the mora), intellectual and
: material advancement of our country. If has
j aimed to be rigl't rather than popular, -and to es-
I pouse and eonmt-iid to-day the truth that otht ra
may not be witling to accept till to-morrow. In
pursuing th is course, mistakes have doubtless bean
made and faults committed; but, having in all
things incited our readers to think and JuJge for
themselves rather than adopt Mindly our own or
others' conclusions, we believe wo may fa rty claim
I for this journal the credit ofJiaving qualified its
readers to detect nd expose even iis own errors.
To develop the minds of the young by the most
general, thorough and practice! Education. arid to
encourage and stimulate Productive industry,
through (rco grants of Public Lands to actual su
tlers and cultivators, as also through 'he protec
tion of imm ilure or peculiarly exposed branches
trom too powerful foreign competion, and among
the aims tti which this journal bus adhered through
good and evil report, and which it steadfastly com
mends to American patriotism and philanthropy.
As to the Civil War now devastating our coun
try, wo hold it to have originated iu a K> hellion
more wanton, wicked, inexcusable, than was ever
before known—a Rebellion in the interests of the
few against the many—a Rebellion designed to
raise higher the walls of caste and tighten the
chains of oppression. Having done al we could
without . surrendi r of vital principles to avoid this
Wat, and witnessed the forbearance, meekness, soil
long suffering wi'h w 'eh the Federal Govern men t
sought to av rt its horrors, we hold it our clear
duty, with that of every other eitiss a, to sun > by
the naitun and its fairly chose-, i uivra, and to sec
ond With all our energies their efforts to uphold the
Union, the Uousuiution, and the supremacy of
the Laws. Ami, though th* Rebellion has become,
through usurpation, deception, terrorism, and
Mpoib'tion, fearfully .strong, we believe tie Ameri
can Republic lar stronger, and thai the unanimous,
earnest efforts of loyal hearts and hands wi'l insure
its overt' row. But on all questions affecting the
objects, the scope, and duration of this most ex
tr lordiuary contest, we defer to those whoui the
American Feoff© have clothed with authority,
holding unity ol purpose and of action indispen
sable in so grave an emergency.
iu a crisis like the present, our columns must be
largely engrossed with the current history of the
VVui lor the Union, and with elucidations of its
u.oro striking incidents. We shall not, however,
I remit that attention to Literature, to Foreign Af
fairs, to Agricultural Progress, to Crops, Markets,
ike., which has already, we trust, won for
THE TRIBUNE an honorable position among iu
eotecnporaries. Our main object is ami shall be to
produce a comprehensive newspaper from which a
csicful reader may gain a vivid and faithful histo
ry oi the times, not merely in the domaiue of Ac
tion but in tiiut ol Opinion also. As our facili
ties for acquiring information iucressc wiib years,
wo trust that an improvement in the contents of
our journal is perceptible, and that, in the variety
and fulness of iat llipence afforded, we may still
hope to "tnauo each day a critic on the last." In
this hope, we solicit a continuauco of the generous
measure of patronage hitherto accorded to our
ournul.
