CUTTING TIMBER FOR FENCING.
An Old Farmer's Experience.
There never will bo much improvement in
-the plan?, ystem or method of fanning, or any
thing else, if we place implicit confidence,
without investigation, in the opinion and prac
tices of others, ancient or modern. Any man
is liable sometimes to he mistaken; and espe
cially, if this belief is grounded wholly, or in
part ou theoty, or on the opinion of his father,
or some other great man. If we try the thing
several times with the same result, it will very
much establish the fact of the truth or falsity
of the matter in hand. "Experience is the
best kiud of knowledge that can be acquired."
According to luy experience, the time that
has bceu considered as the best for cutting tim
ber, where durability is required, is a mistake.
That time was in the old vf the moou in Feb
ruary, when it was said there . was a smaller
quantity of sup in the wood; than at any other
time iu the year. And they likewise held the
i-lea that fence posts ought to be seasoned be
fore they were set iu the ground.
i had posts made from the body of a large
•chestnut tree, that grew by itself; it was cut
about the midJlftf April, made into posts,
and put up without seasoning. They general
•lj stood about twenty years; at the end of thir
ty-four years the last of them taken up,
and were riot then entirely rotten. Again, I
cut a white oak in the beginning of May, when
there was a full flow of sap; their general du
rability wus seventeen years; and some of those
made of the limbs, were taken up after they
had stood twenty-two years, and were not vet
rotten.
Again, I cut another chestnut, aud eighteen
feet from the stuujp, 1 made a gate post of tbe
body, peeled off the baik aud plauted it while
yet green. The post has been standing since
1811, and it shows no sign of being rotten ex
cept a small hollow in the top of it. 1 cut an - |
other tlnifty white-oak at the standard time in I
February, and planted the posts the spring fol
lowing. The ground in which tbe fence was
set, in all three cases, was alike. At tl.e end
of six years, from plauting this last batch of
posts, there were so many of them rotten as to
be easily broken off even with the top of the
grouud. I have not been much in tbe practice
<d w-iting for posts to scasou before they were
used, though it sometimes happened; but tbe re
sult was always in favor of the green posts.
.Wheat the sap is displaced by seasoning, all
tbe cavities are filled with air, which when bur
ied in the ground, become partially dislodged
by water, producing a mixture very unfavora
ble to the durability of the wood. If the air
could be cx;luded; the huts of posts would last
a great length of time, as where logs have been
found several feet below tbe surface of the
ground, iu low, swampy places, that ia all pro
bability have laiu there many hundred years.—
IV heD posts a-e photedin a green state, the
sap prevents in part the admission of the air,
aud hence their lasting longer. If timber is
■cut for rails, when the sap is running, the bark
stripped off and the rails made immediately,
they will last one-fourth longer than if cut at
any other time and have the bark loft on. The
inside lark, when it rcmaius on the wood, is the
first part to decay and rot, and being closc-ly
connected with the sap of the wood, aud being
of a porous nature, contains air and water
enough to carry the process oF decay into the
wood, when, if the bark is peeled off, the sap
part of the wood dries in a short time, and in
a great measure prevents decay.
1 have noticed that posts made from the limbs
and upper parts of tbe tree, always lasted the
loDgest.
It is a bad plan to bank dirt up around tho
posts in setting feuoc, to turn tbe water off; as
with all that can be d no there will be moisture
encugb left, in company with tbe air, to pro
mite a speedy rotting. The air should as much
as possible be txoluced from the post, below
tho top of the ground ; aud to do this, make a
hollow, or dish arouud each post, to catch the
water, and the longer the water stands there
the better for the post.
A PRACTICAL FAKMEK.
