Tm l is the..boast of some of the Dem
ocr7ttie Papers — that Asa Packer, Whose
money.: is_ _said' tai have been used to
bnyhislioniination, is !`the Working
men's Candidate." Says the Mauch
Chunk Gazelle: From 1843 to .1848.
when Judge Packer was an officer in
the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Com-
Vany, lie .demonstrated his Jove for
workingmen by paying his employees
in the Company's scrip at par, and re
deeming it-at forty per cent. discount.
The poor men were obliged to sub
mit to this ruinous shave, as they
could .buy.nothing with the scrip, and
had nothing else to buy with. Thus
Packer profited by their necessities to
the extent of forty cents on every dol
lard..and -.in this way helped to build
up—his:colossal fortune. We.are glad
to iiniTO that the present officers and
management of this staunch old corn
pany_doibuSiness in a different way.
IRE-ASSESSMENTS.—We see it stated
that -the Commissioner of Internal
Revenue proposes to have re-assess
ments made :on incomes, and to corn
mence'.in Philadelphia. Allow us to
suggest 'that inquiry be made for one
Asa' Packer, _ of the Sixth Ward, who
is - represented as a millionaire, and
yet who only Paid about $40,00 in
three -years.- - It strikes -us- he would
be a good.. Subjcptto begin'op, and if
there are any other shirks lot them all
be hunted - UP and made to bear their
honest,Share of the public burdens.
IT may be, • a source of gratification
to our poor • people to know that in
some parts of the world there is a
more cheerful prospect. in store for
them than here, with potatoes increas
ing in - price from week to week, and
apparently without cause, unless it be
that Packer may possibly buy his elec
tion next: month. In the great Re
publican State of lowa, potatoes are
selling for .twelve and one half cents
a bushel, and they are not very eag
erly sought for at that price.
To escape the payntent of bounty
tax, assessed owhis immense fortune,
Asa Packer played a most outrageous
dcdge—getting himself_ assessed in
Philadelphia, where be returned a
gold watch and a few other taxable
knick—knacks which he carried along
in his carpet bag I The same Asa .
.P2;:i;cr - rsides in a mansion which he
built ten years-ago - in the borough of
Mauch Chunk, at an expense of a
hundred thousand dollars. He is the
Democratic candidate for Governor.
iiop,§T. VOTER, we ask you is the
Wholesale plan of buYing up the State
- of RennsylVania—of making the ballot
box 'a. - Matter of merchandise—going
te•-keep . yen away from•the polls? Or
will „these - hundreds of theilsand.s_of
dollars freni thc.520,000,000, amassed
by poor payment of others for their
labor, make you determined that your
vote shall count against such whole
sale knavery?-
DoN'Tclect a selfish man Governor.
Don't vote for a man who makes his
private interests paramount. Don't
vote for a ; man: who grinds the faces
of the poor by raising the price of
coal fifty seven cents ner ton, in order
to add to his millions. Don't vote for
a man whccebanges his residence to
avoid paying his taxes. Don't vote for
Asa Packer!
THE Democracy are holding no pub
lic or political meeting. They do not
parade as of old, or meet to reason
together. They will have no expen
ditures this- season for room—rent,
music, carriages, printing, capes,tor
ches,or the other ordinary auxiliaries
of a.campaigit. Bow are they spending
Asa Packer' money?
PACKER served two terms in Con
gress, In one session of nine months
-260 working days—he was present at
his desk but 54 days; and yet he drew
his full salary ($3,000) for the session
$55.56 per day for every day he sery
ed. Can a .man who would do this
(to say nothing of the tax fraud)_ be
considered honest?
A DEMOCRATIC contemporary vol—
unteers in defence of - Asa Packer. ate
manly argument that if he 'did not
pay his taxes it was not his fault, but
that of the assessors. Now, as the
assessors at the time alleged ware
Johnsonites, the trouble, yet rests in—
side of the family. '
WEEEN Governor" Gea.ry was first
.elected, there was .a tax on real estate.
No State tax on real estate to day.—
If your are in favor o no -State tax.on
real estate, vote for Geary. If you
want that tax again imposed, vote for
Packer.
MR. ASA PACKER has given a
c.,) , a pie of thousand dollars to the Av
ondale sufferers, which is about as
great a thing, in cemparison to his
groni, wealth, as a splinter on a gang
plank to a three-decker man-of-war.
How - does the - extra si : cents per ton
for the transportation of coal over the
Lehigh R.R.,wherehy teal, is kept up
in the EaA- how does it suit the poor
Wiorer,in that it - is .aid - to. be used to
carry on the Packer cane pa ign?
TWENTY PIECES OF SILVER. —Cour:-
ties are now given:out by contract for
Democratic political purposez:, by the
several Democratic committees. That
57 cents per ton on coal on the Lehigh
road must tell ! thinks Asa Packer.
EVERY MAN bo burns yealfly four
tons of coal transported over Asa
Packer's railroad; pays that corpor
ation $2.28 tax annually— fifty seven
cents per ton, the rise in the price of
transportation since Iliay last.

4 , G RANDFATIIERS' STOVE."
Our grandfather's stove, what a funny old
thing,
So•deep, so wide and so :all;
Now the people would car. . who arc stylish
and gay,
" It was only a hole in the wall.".
it matters not w, hat. it was %pleasant to see
When night's mantle was flung over all;
Grandfather take down his good book and
rca d
By the light from the hole in the wall.
As the sturdy young men rolled in the great
logs,
They would laugh at each wintry
Whilst grandma would sit on her old chair
and knit
By the light from the whole in the wall.
The girls then wore hoine spun, and so did
their beaux's,
For pride was a principle small
And courting was done and hearts have
been won
By the light from the hole in the wall.
The neighbors were friendly wherever they'd
meet,
With a word of true kindness for ail;
And joy was complete to hear voices so sweet
Ring round that old bale in the wall.
In those days we know, folks cared not for
show,
Of improvements knew nothing at all ;.
But 'twas really no joke, when great clouds
of smoke
Rushed out from the hole in the wall.
But those days are now o'er, we shall know
them no more,
And all those old fashions have Horn;
Whilst the solemn and gay are coming each
day
To purchase the famous "OLD HOME."
Coming not only in couples, but in scores,
as hundreds of good and wise men and
women have done before, to look — upon this
magnificent stove, which is acknowledged to
be the best cooking stove of the age. Re
membei the place,
