Auieubral Department, WEDNESDAY MORNING Sept. 15, '69, The Price of Wheat At this season of the year, When the farmer is contemplating with some satisfaction his well•filed barn, the in quiry is not unnatural, "Will wheat go up or decline?" The agriculturist would be untrue to himself' who did not carefully count the chances of a rise or fall before he made sale. Holding on for high prices, without sufficient •calculation, has frequently proved a 'ruinous policy. A farmer has five hun dred bushels of wheat to sell. At a dollar and a half a bushel he would receive seven hundred and fifty dol -1 ars. Suppose he took the chances of arise cr fall, and postponed sale for a year. Since these chances are equal, under ordinary circumstance it is clear that comparing one year with anoth er nothing is made by withholding sale; odthe contraryonuch is lost. Wastage amounts to something ; indeed, more than any farmer would willingly sub mit to co'd he measure it beforehand. It is not improbable that of the seven hundred and fifty dollars he would lose fifty by wastage alone. Again, there is a clear loss of the interest on his money for a year, which would be forty-five dollars. Add these two items together and we have a net loss of nicety five dollars or the interest on Over fifteen hundred. Any correct reasoning, then, which impels a farmer to hold on to his crop mustinvolve these losses. Unless there is a certainty of such advances in prices as will overcome them, he should sell at nee. And weighing the condition of things, is there a probability of any immediate rise in the price of wheat ? Reports from all sections of the coun try furnish evidence of a bountiful crop. There will not only be enough to supply home demand, but sufficient for any reasonable foreign demand. It is hardly likely then that any home influence will operate to enhance pri ces unless the supply of corn falls short. There is some likelihood of this, judging from the decrease of acreage when compared witn last year, and taking into consideration the ex tent and severity of the late drought. But it is hardly probable that these causes will so increase t'le price of wheat as to warrant a retention of it in the garners. To do this the farmer mast expect at the end of the year a price not far from one dollar and se— venty-five cents per bushel. The effect of a foreign market, how ever, should not be overlooked. Eng land is our largest purchaser of this cereal. She raises an average crop this year; we could not therefore expect to export more than we have done in former years. But Russia has here tofore given her a larger supply than the United Stater. This year the Russian crop is short. 'England's supply from this source Must then materially fall off, and in a corresponding degree the demand for American wheat will increase, We have here grounds for supposing that reason of the scarcity in Europe the prices of wheat will advance. Any rise must, however, be slow and re mote. The conclusion seems impera tive, therefore, that steadiness will be the rule of the wheat market, with chances in favor of a rise in price. We cannot see how it can decline. Phil' a Press. Manuring Meadows Although grass is said not to exhaust the soil, except slowly, there is abun dant evidence for the belief that mead ows must be immured occasionally. Mr. Plate a farmer of Pennsylvania, in giving his system of management, writes as follows : "My land is adapted to all kinds of grain, and to timothy and red clover. My practice is, when I sow a piece to grass, not to plow it again in less than eight years and I frequently let it lie a much longer time. I have a meadow now which has been mowed for six teen successive years, and it never was better than now. In fact, my meadows, under the right treatment, grow better as they grow older. T. do it by returning to a meadow all ' the manure the hay made that was taken from it, and sowing a bushel of gypsum per acre each year. In that way the yield of grass is heavier and finer and richer as the sod thickens. I use manure only for top-dressing the meadows ; in that way I get double price for it. It produces as much worth of grass as it would in grain, and also reproduces itself again in the turf. My turf when ready for plowing un der, is a solid body of grass roots twelve inches deep or more, and so thick on the top that no soil can be seen. I consider one such turf, when turned under, equal to 160 tons of first-class barnyard manure per acre." TITIN Sour Iruit, every branch of it 1— Take the same pains with it that you would in picking. It is just as neces sary ; it is more necessary ; it gives you better fimit, add more of it and that decidedly.—What you then pick so much the more worth picking.— SUM:IIEIi fallows if to be of real ad vantage must be plowed and harrow ed after rains, add during dry weath er, so as to kill weed seeds, mellow the clods, and give all parts of the surface soil the benefits of sun, rain, and harrow teeth. APPLE DUMPLING, BAKED.—Select nice tart apples, peel and core them ; fill with sugar and a little cinnamon, make your paste and cover each an, ple, bake in a shallow pan., eat with any sweet st,uce, MISCELLANEOUS TOWN LOTS FOR SALE, RAV ING TDB FOLLOWING MERITS.— They arc near the Court House.
