WEDNESDAY MORNING Sept. I, '69,
Thinning Out Grapes.
As the season for thinning out
grapes is at hand, the following time
ly suggestions from the grape Guitar
i'st will prove valuable to our grape
growing readers :
"Is the importance of thinning out
the fruit of the vine duly considered
by the majority of cultivators? I think
not. From close observation, and sad
experience, the subject, in my opinion,
calls for much more attention than is
usually given. In young vines, this is
particularly the case.
Such vigorous and hardy constituted
varieties as the Concord may stand it,
but even they will eventually suffer.
This fault is not only to be found in
the vineyards of the novice, but can
be seen almost everywhere, in charge
of those who know better. This, then
being admitted, the next question is,
bow shall it best be remedied? Shall
we prune so much shorter, so as not
to leave more wood than the vine can
carry safely through, or leave more
wood, and then thin out the bunches?
The latter, in my opinion, will be
the best, for by the first plan we get
our fruit too much crowded and throw
too much force into the young canes
for the following year's bearing, My
impression is, that when a vine is
pruned to what would seem about
right, the pitching out of every third
bunch, at first operation, pinching
back would be the method. I would
leave but two bunches on each bearing
shoot, and in some instances it is bet
ter to leave but one.
We all know that the forming of the
seed of any fruit is the heaviest tax
on the plant. This being the case, do
we not give considerable relief when
we diminish this tax one-third? I
think it would not be safe in counting
on having the same weight of fruit
in the two bunches as if three are left.
Some years ago we grew Concord
bunches in that way, which the com
mittee who were to test them, would
not admitto be that variety until they
tasted them. For marketing table
grapes this is particularly practicable.
For instance, let one man take Con
cords that will average three-fourth of
a pound to the bunch, and another
have them as - usually grown. and my
word for it, the large bunches will
command nearly double price, not only
among the wealthy, but the masses.

they have good crops.
Successful farming is made up by
attention to the little things, The
farmer who does his best, earns his
money with best appreciations, and
uses it with best results. Such men
are the" salt of the earth."
Tn FARRIER is never so strong,
never of so much service to himself
and his fellows as when he speaks for
himself. We care not whether it be in
a public journal, or at a public meet
ing, but nothing is so impolitic as to
attempt to smother him up under the
wing of somebody else. It is this that
has made the discussions of our Far
mer's Clubs so trustworthy and espe
cially valuable. These proceedings
really represent the opinions of the
class they are assumed to be ; whereas
a too common habit to overlay him
and his with very great people and
some other people, so that he loses
all identity and has to answer for be

AN experienced dairyman says :
There is no process of working or
washing that will secure a good ar—
ticle of butter, or that will get all the
buttermilk out till it has stood a short
time, when it must be worked over
the second time, after which it will
keep a long time. Butter that has not
been worked the second time will not
keep more than two or three days in
warm weather. I do not care how
much pains you take with it, the but
termilk that is left in the butter be—
comes sour, makes your butter ran
cid.

THREE definitions : To mulch a soil

SEWING MACHINES
AMERICAN BUTTON=HOLE
OVER-SEAMING AND SEWING MA
CHINE COMBINED
MEDAL AWARDED AT THE PARIS EX-
POSITION, 1867
In directing attention to the celebrated
COMBINATION BUTTON HOLE AND
SEWING MACHINE, we feel fully warran
ted in claiming for it unquestionable superi
ority over all others as a Family Machine.—
The Simplicity, Ease and Certainty with
which it operates, as well as the uniform ex
cellence of its work, certainly place it far in
advance of any other similar invention of th
age.
It is also the eheapeet, intrinsically, as well
as the best, since it is really two machines
combined in one, (liy I' simple and beautiful
mechanical arrangement never before ac
compHshed by human ingenuity,) making
either the Lock Stitch or Button Hole Stitch,
as occasion may require. It is, at the same
time, simple in construction, comparatively
noiseless, easily understoo 1, and, in a word,
it combines with those advantages exclusive
ly its own the most desirable qualities of all
others, for it not only does every variety
of sewing in a SUPERIOR MANNER, but
in addition OVERSEAMS splendidly and
makes beautiful BUTTON and EYELET HOLES
in all fabrics. This is far beyond the ca.
pacity of any other machine.
The SPLENDID MECHANISM of this Machine,
and the superior skill workmanship and ma
terials employed in its construction, are a
guarantee of accuracy, strength and dura
bility, and enable the company and its agents
to Warrant Every Machine they sell to give
entire satisfaction.

Among sewing machines, those made by
the Singer Manufacturing Company,• rank
with the highest. Their manufacturing ma
chines, have long been known as the best
for manufacturing purposes. But within
the past few years, they have given special
attention to the production of a
FAMILY MAURINE,
destined to win much favor in the
HOUSEHOLD
The machine which they now offer is quiet
light-running, simple, fast, noiseless. Its
accessories for
HEMMING, BRAIDING, BINDING,
QUILTING, TUCKING, CORDING,
FELLING, GATHERING,
aro simple and easily understood. Ifs deli
cate though enduring and tireless muscles of
iron and steel, do all the work noiselessly,
better, and few will deny, "Faster than hand
can do it." Thor urge those wishing to pur
chase a machine. to examine all the other
manufactures before buying, as it will, for
loon', overcome all the objections to the
other machines that can be brought against
it. Machines on band for sale and exhibi
tion, together with a full and complete as
sortmet of
SILK, TWIST, LINEN, OR COTTON TIIREAD,
and all the accessories for the machines, by
