WEDNESDAY MORNING Aug. 18, '69,
Management of Young Orchards.
Mr. Henry H. Cratio, of Michigan,
in a late number of the Country Gen
tleman, in discussing the management
of young orchards, makes these re
marks ;
It will be conceeded, I think, that
the ultimate value of an orchard de
pends upon the healthy and vigorous
growth of the trees while young— un
til, at least., their habits of growth,
&a., become fully 'developed. As an
apple tree can no more make such
growth without proper care and treat
ment than any other plant, itbecomes
a question of serious consideration
what these should be ; for an orchard
of stunted, dwarfed • and sickly
trees upon a farm is not only an un
sightly object, but a valueless encum
brance.
The better course of treatment for
an orchard of young trees, undoubt
edly, is to cultivate the ground con
stantly with roots until they shall
have attained a considerable size, du
ring which the fertility of the soil
should not only be kept up but in
creased by a liberal application of ma
nure. Where this cannot be done,
the next best method will be to seed
down the ground exclusively with clo
ver— This will not make a stiff, com
pact sward, like fine grasses, so detri
mental to the growth of young trees,
but will keep the land open and por
ous, as well as serve to enrich it.
When the clover shows indications
of "running out," put in the plow and
turn under the sward. The ground,
for one season at least, should then be
cultivated with - some kind of root
crop, to be followed again by clover.
But if this is not practicable, then af
ter being thoroughly plowed and
worked over, clover should again be
sown upon it—clover following clo
ver.
In the meantime the ground imme
diately about the trees, sho'd be kept
constantly shaded and manured to a
distance equal, at least, to the diam
eter of the head of the tree—and the
farther the better.
By this course the land will yield a
fair return in clover crops, and at the
same time will be constantly increas
ing in fertility ; and in a few years the
owner will find himself in possession
of an orchard of healthy, vigorous and
well developed bearing trees—not on
ly one of 'the greatest ornaments to
his farm, but a source of enjoyment,
profit and real worth.
Waterlog Horses.
Horses should never be kept so long
without water that they will drink
largely when they get it. Give it to
tbem often, and they will never in—
jure themselves with it. Nothing is
more common than to hitch a team to
a plow and make them work half a
day without a .drop. What man wo'd
submit to such a treatment? If the
plow is started at seven in the morn
ing, water should be given again be
fore ten ; and again in the afternoon
at four o'clock. Even if half an hour
is consumed, more work will be done
in a day. The objection that horses
on the road should not be loaded with
water is not valid. A horse weighing
twelve hundred will not be much en
cumbered addioitnally by twenty lbs.
of water, while the detention will give
him additional strength. Every far
mer knows that when he himself un
dertakes to lift a large log or heavy
stone he can do more by first inflating
himself with air, and,not unfrequent
ly, he loses a button or two from his
pantaloons in the operation. Some
degree of inflation by water will add
to the horse's strength in a similar
manner.. In driving a horse on the
road, at a natural gait of nine or ten
miles an hour, I have frequently
. had
occasion to observe that he was labor
ing with perspiration until I let him
drink freely, when he ceased to sweat,
and evidently traveled more freely.—
Don't be afraid to give your horse wa
ter ; the danger is in making them
abstain too long, in which case care is
needed.
TlNNlNG.—Articles of copper and
brass can be tinned with great facility
by the use of a solution of the "salt
on tin," (a chloride,) in ten parts of
water, and adding to it a second solu , .
tion made of caustic potash, also in
ten parts of water. The clouded mix
ture soon becomes clear and when
completely transparent is ready for
use, until whicb, time it is to be kept
in well closed glass bottles. For use,
the mordant is to be heated in a ves
sel and a tin plate of considerable sur
face is to he suspended in it. The ar
ticle to be tinned is then to be dipped
in the vessel, from which it may be
removed after a few minutes, and h
will be found to be covered with a uni
form silvery white coating.
COAllitON steel may,it is claimed, be
endowed with the properties of the
finest cast metal, and when burned be
'brought back to its original condition,
by the use of a tempering liquid in
vented by a Freech locksmith, His
bath is prepared by adding two pounds
of hydrochloric acid, 300 grains nitric
acid (specific gravity 1,334), 325
grains of sulphate of zinc and about
three ounces of tripoli to about four
gallons of water. A piece of cast iron
weighing about three ounces is to be
placed in this liquid and allowed to
remain twenty-four hours, when it is
ready for use.

FINE CALF BOOTS
In directing attention to the celebrated
COMBINATION BUTTON HOLE AND

The Simplicity, Ease and Certainty with
which it operates, as well as the uniform ex--

advance of any other similar invention of th
age.
It is also the cheapest, intrinsically, as well
as the best, since it is really two machines
combined in one, (by o simple and beautiful
mechanical arrangement never before ac
comp!ished by human ingenuity,) making
either tho Lock Stitch or Button Hole Stitch, '
as occasion may require. It is, at the same
time, simple in construction, comparatively
noiseless, easily understool, and, in a word,
it combines with those advantages exclusive
ly its own the most desirable qualities of all
others, for it not only does every variety
of sewing in a SUPERIOR if AMMER, but
in addition Ovansanms splendidly and
makes beautiful BUTTON and EYELET HOLES
in all fabrics. This is far beyond the ca•
pacity of any other machine.
The SPLENDID MECHANISM of this Machine,
