AkTicllltaal Poßrimollt, WEDNESDAY MORNING, June 9,'69. Humbugs and Sharpers. Tbere are, at the present time a great many men trying to live by their wits instead of honest labor. They are engaged in the manufacture of ar ticles " needed in every household," which once known "no one will will ingly do without." Or, they set to work to produce perpetual motion, or some other machine that will enable them to make a fortune in a day. Or they will take up some old and dis carded variety of fruit or potato, or some other seed ; which, under a new. name, they palm off on the credulous. Or they will take a load of stoves, which they will sell with "all the fur niture complete," but, which furni ture they could nct bring along, be cause of the heavy roads, or heavy loads : they will agree to take a note for the full price of the stove and fur -niture, which note is always traded off or sold to second parties, and has to he paid at maturity, or the cost of a law-suit added. Of course the furni ture(which was to come along in a few , days) never conies, and the stove cost double its worth, and the scoundrels who did the swindle -are never to be found. We sometimes feel sorry to see innocent and confiding parties thus taken in : and again we feel and say, "Served him right—he ought to have known better !" The best way for our readers to do is, to order their goods from respec table. and well-known establishments, who are permanently located and who have a reputation at stake, and let all itinerant agents and peddlers se verely alone. If a man offers you an article of any kind which you can ex amine at the time, and which you reed (if you do not need it, it will he dear at any Price)—purchase, if you are so inclined ; but on a future de lively, give 'no obligation. only as the article is delivered and comes up to the recommendations. Spring is the time when sharpers from the city will, like the locusts of Egypt, come, down on the country, and devour every green thing. - We have known farmers who purchased rare and costly fruit trees, shrubs and flow ering plants, of which beautifully col ored plates were shown, only to find them old and worthless sorts sold un der a new name. " Far fetched and dear bought," will apply to all such. Another dodge is, the sale of pat cut rights.. Farmers ought to leave such things alone, became, generally, they are not familiar with inventions nor inventors—who, if they have a really good thing, knoW enough tC; go into the manufacture of the same and make the most of their discovery. So, also, in the purchase of farm machin ery; and the great importance of making a judicious selection, es pecially since farmers have become so dependant upon machinery, justifies the occupation of a little extra space to offer a few special suggestions.— The disposition to cling to old and well tried implements is commenda ble, and while too much care cannot be exercised in exchanging that which seems to have rendered good service, for a more improved machine, the farmer ought not shut his eyes to the fact that defects in his old may be re mained in the new machine. Improve . - ment—genuine and substantial—is the order of the day, and those who ig nore the progressive tendencies of the age will soon be left behind by those who turn every new development to their advantage. Especially care ought to be taken to get good machinery. By this we mean, that which is good mechanical ly. It is far better to pay a little ex tra and get an article that will last a life time than to buy-because it seems cheap—that which at best can't last but a few years. Good farm machin ery can't be built on cheap princzples, and those who understand their inter ests will get the BEST, let it cost what it may. POULTRY IN LARGE NUMBERS.- The London Field lately had an article on the thilures that seem to have uni versally occurred in attempts to keep fowls in large numbers. In conclu sion it says : There are two reasons for this inev itable result; one is, that when a large number of fowls are crowded together or kept in one place, the - ground be comes tainted with manure, and dis— ease invariably breaks out. This is more particularly true of chickens, for in every attempt to, rear a large num ber in a confined space, the mortality is excessive. The employment of an incubator in this climate will always be found a failure, for this simple reason that it is impossible to rear the chickens when they have been hatched ; the hatching process is sufficiently easy; but chickens are of no value whatever without you have hens to brood them. The only manner in which an-incuba tor can be usefully employed is by hatching an extra number of eggs so .as to give each hen a full brood of chickens. Used in this way we have known small incubators very service able ; but when employed to hatch chickens that are to be reared by ar tificial mothers, we have never seen them used with advantage. To WASH CALICO WITHOUT FA DING .—lnfuse three gills of salt in four quarts of water ; put the calico in while hot and leave it till cold, and in this way the colors are rendered per manent, and will not fade by subse quent washing. EINVNESS TO HORSES.-A writer in the ilme . ican ,S'fock Journal, dis cussing and &flouncing the cruelty practiced by men called "horsemen," says : • A gentleman of New York is the possessor of a thousand-dollar horse, whose organ of approbativeness is so prominently active he can be coaxed, but rarely driven against his will.— When the considerate owner enters the stable the horse greets him with a hearty whinny, his only language, which is equivalant to a cheerful ex pression of delight. He is at once treated to a lump of sugar, which the beautiful and sagacious creature knows is usually carried in a vest pocket— for he rubs his noso there.— On returning from a drive he expects two lumps. As two are invariably forthcoming when unharnessed, it is_ unmistakable evidence to the horse that his conduct and efforts were sat isfactory. The sight of a whip to that animal would be an insult and an out rage to his affectoinate regard for one who looks carefully to his health, se curity and conifort. Such an instru ment of barbarity does not belong to that good man's carriage, and may GOD speed the incoming day when they will only be seen in museums, to illustrate the conditions of countries that ultimately became Christianized. A SEASONABLE HINT.-It may be of service to some of our readers to remind them, that any time this and next monththey can Layer their shrub bery, vines,ro.i.es, &c., while they are in the prime of their growth. The several spireas, weigalla, Forsythes, Chinese glacine clematis, tecon3a,py rus japonica, honey-suckles, &c., &c.; and in the fruit the grape and the raspberry that do not propogate them selves readily, like the Catawissa and American purple and some red varie ties,.&c., can all be extensively in creased in this way. The Catawissa raspberry costs at present about, 25 cents per stalk ; and a person having half a dozen can produce fifty the next season by aiding nature in this way. So it is with grapes, the dear est kinds of which with a little labor and care can he increased four=fold yearly, Some varieties of the grape can be propogated easily—like the Hartford Prolific, Concord,Teleg, raph, &c. ; others are very difficult, as the Delaware, Diana, &c. Those who have have not hereto fore increased their shrubs, vines,&c., as here suggested, should attempt it the present season ; and if the thing is attended with ordinary care, they will be surprised and gratified at their success.—Germantown Tel. TRAINING COLTS.-A correspondent of the Western Rural says : " My mode of training colts is this : I first halter them and put them in the stable. I curry them gently each day; place the harness on them and let them on for a few hours each day for a few days. After they have be come accustomed to the harness, 1 place them before an empty wagon and drive them about a few hours each day for a number of consecutive days. After they are sufficiently sub dued, so that I can hitch and unhitch them at will, I use them harrowing in grain, and alllight work the first season." We should be glad to rebeive prac tical articles from horsemen on this subject. GREAT POULTRY SITOW IN ENG— LAND.—The most successful poultry shows of this country are small affairs, in size at least, compared with some held in England. ht a late exhibi tion at Birmingham, England, there were 2747 pens or coops of fowls. Of gray Dorkings alone there were 272 coops, and of games 482 coops, with 153 coops of game Bantams. Some choice birds were valued at very high rates. ALa Fleche cock was held at £25, and some of the Dorkings as high as £lOO. Some heavy weights are reported. The prize gander,Tou louse, weighed 37-1 pounds ; the prize pair of ducks, Rouen,l9 , l pounds; the prize turkey, 33 pounds. It can safe ly be said there is a poultry fever in England equal to anything we have here. LEAKY TEATS IN COWS.-" J. C." Columbus, Ohio, wites to the An Agriculturist as follows : "I have a valuable cow that loses her milk ; at times it runs from her in streams. Will you give me a rem edy ?"`. " Ans.—Milk three times a day, say at five in the morning, at noon, and at eight in the evening. If this does not stop it, have a little collotion, (which is gun cotton dissolved in ether) to be had of all druggists or photographers, and put a drop upon the end of each teat after milking, being careful not to touch it to a sore spot, or the cow will kick. The hole need not be coy ered'except in extreme cases, for a little ring of collodion will shrink in drying and draw the hole together. OUT OFF THE LEAVES.—AImost every one who has had any experi ence in gardening knows the impor tance of pruning newlY planted trees. But in transplanting cabbages, beets, tomatoes and similar vegetables, few ever think of taking off any of the leaves, an operation fully as impor tant as the reduction of the branches of an apple or a pear tree. Let every - one who is about setting out any of the seculant plants try the cutting off of the larger leaves, and we think they will never omit it again,--Ilearth and Rome. SEWING AI CHINE A MERICAN BUTTON-HOLE OVER-SEAMING AND SEWING MA- CHINE COMBINED MEDAL AWARDED AT THE PARIS EX- POSITION, 1867 In directing attention to the celebrated COMBINATION BUTTON HOLE AND SEWING MACHINE, we feel fully warran ted in claiming for it unquestionable euperi ortty over all others as a Faniily Machine.— The Simplicity, Ease and Certainty with which it operates, as well as the uniform ex cellence of its work, certainly place it far i advance of any other similar invention of the age. It is also the eheapcst, intrinsically, as well as the best, since it is really two machines combined in one, (by a simple and beautiful mechanical arrangement never before ac complished by human ingenuity,) making either the Lock Stitch or Button Hole Stitch, as occasion may require. It is, at the same time, simple in construction, comparatively noiseless, easily understood, and, in a word, it combines with those advantages exclusive ly its own the most desirable qualities of all others, for it not only does every variety of sewing in a SUPERIOR MANNER, but in addition OVERSEAMS splendidly and makes beautiful BUTT3N wad EYELET ROLES in all fabrics. This is far beyond the ca pacity of any other machine. The SPLENDID MECHANISM of this Machine, and the superior skill workmanship and ma terials employed in its construction, are a guarantee of accuracy, strength and dura bility, and enable the company and its agents to Warrant Every Machine they sell to give entire satisfaction.
