—President Grant announces his intention to
sink all personal and party considerations in tbe

—A number of prisoners in the Missouri State
Penitentiary mutinied on Friday. One convict
was shot and a number flogged before - order was.

—The funeral of Father De Smet, the Indian
Missionary, took place at St. Louis on Saturday
morning, and was attended by an immense con
course of people.
—Sis thousand five hundred and sixty-ona immi
grants arrived at Now York between the first ol
April and the 19th of May. 17,000 arrived during
the past week.
Advices fiom Monte Video, April. 23d, say
that the ycl'ow fever prevails there to such an
extent that the people are flying from the city and
business is suspended.
—The New York Sunday schcol snperlntendants
gave a public reception on Saturdry evening fo
Mr. Hortley, one of the secretaries of the Lon
don Sunday School Union.
—Henry Ward Beecher was thrown from his car
riage on Saturday by a collision with a heavy
track. His vehicle was-badly managed, but the
reverend gentlemen os;apid unhurt.
—The cholera is at New Orleans, and it is giv
ing a large business to ihe undertakers and grave
diggers. Its presence miy aid in restoring the
political equlibrium of Louisiana.
—The Grasshopper is as groat a terror in Texas
as Is the Modocs in the Lavirijeds. He eats the
corn crop clo;e to the ground, aud in his victori
ous ravages does not oven let tences stand.

against Tweed, but not one of them pleases the
old sinner, lor he pleads “not guilty" in each and
