918. ADAMS’ EULOGY ON SEWARD.
The warmth of feeling with which Mr.
Adams depicts the character and services
of his deceased friend. Mr. Seward, is cre
ditable alike to tne earnestness and tenac
ity of his affection. Long associated, and
therefore intimately acquainted, with the
subject of his panegyric, he was enabled
to look behind those prejudices which are
apt to gather in tbe public mind during
tbe active career of a statesman, and
thereby form a more accurate judgment
than others of his real qualities of mind
and heart. We have nothing to say, con
sequently, of fir. Adams’ estimate of the
eminent Secretary, which we confess does
not entirely coincide with our own, but a
word, we think, is due to the truth of his
tory in regard to one point .which does
not so much conceru individual charac
ter as it does that of tbe nation.
In bis description of the political cam
paign of 1830 61, and of the disappoint
ment it was to tbe friends of Mr. Seward
that he was not nominated as the Repub
lican candidate by the convent on at Chi
cago, Mr. Adams hardly does justice to
the circumstances. He says that Mr.
Seward, by his long service and promi
nence in the public councils, and by his
experience in various minor offices, was
so clearly entitled to the nomination that
his failure recalled Jacques moralizing on
man’s ingratitude, and the fate of Aris
tides. Bamevelde. and the.. Iwo
He thus ascribes the result to causes not
creditable to our history,)!’ they actually
prevailed, and which would go far to dis
credit the principles of republican gov
ernment in the eyes of other nations and
of lime. words are these: —
The older statesmen of great note bad
vanished, so as to make his party promi
nence more marked than ever. As a con
sequence when the nominating conven
tion assembled at Chicago, tbe eyes of all
were turned towards him as the candidate
of all others the most distinguished. A
large plurality had been chosen as dele
gates friendly to him, and the general ex
pectation was that he would be nominal
ed at once. But it was remembered that,
in 1844, Henry Clay was defeated because
he had a long record of public service,
from which many marked sayings and do
iogs might be quoted to affect impressible
waverers, and James K, Polk was elected
because nobody could quote anything
against him, for the reason that he had
never said or done anything worth quot
ing at all. Furthermore, tbe ghosts of
'the higher law and of tbe irrepressible
conflict flitted about to alarm excited im.
j aginations.
Last but not least came in the element
of bargain and management manipulated
by adepts at intrigue, which is almost in
separable from similar assemblies. The
effect of all the§e inflaences united was to
turn the tide at last, and Mr. Seward, the
veteran champion of the reforming poli
cy, was set aside in favor of a gentleman
as little known by anything be bad ever
done as the most sanguine friend of such
a selection could desire. The is beyond
contradiction that no person ever before
nominated, with any reasonable probabil
ity of success, had had so little of public
service to show for b is reward.
It cannot be doubled, as Mr. Adams
represents, that there were intrigue and
bargain in the Chicago Convention ; for
it is the detestable feature ot such gather
ings. One of the most skillful dabblers
In corruption known to our history was
there to trade away the vote of Penney 1
vania, and the report at the time was that
other*-o f like character were on hand
f£om Indiana; they did what they could,
not to defeat Mr Seward, or any other
particular candidate, but to make as ad
vantageous a barter of the ir votes as they
might in view of their own future sue
cesses ; and if they ultimately sided with
Mr. Lincoln it was partly because Mr.
Lincoln’s friends were to promise
than those of Mr. Chasf, Mr. Bates, Mr.
Lean, Mr. Dayton, and Mr. Seward ; hut
chiefly because the traders bad had the sa
gacity to discover that Mr. Lincoln was
really the etrongest candidate. A fter I e

THE RADICAL: FRIDAY. MAY 9,1873.

• , * >.
These hargSfnthg£ howeter, Were 'BOI
the real causes of Seward's defeat, which
were two, namely, that his name was
identified with a branch pf the Repuhli*
can party in this State, connected by
lie sentiment with the; most flagrant cor*
ruption both in principle and practice ;
and, secondly, that Mr. Seward himself'
was suspected, either through ambition
or want of. nerve, of having weakened in
his anti slavery convinctions. The first
cause alienated from him a considerable
number of old YlToigs and Dem
ocrats, who, while they did not impute
venality to Mr, Seward himself, felt that
he was in the hands of a cable that really
laid the basic of those peculiar kinds of
legislation which have ainc«.: ; ;heen o call e d
Tweedlsm; and the eecond x cau9e lost him
the confidence of the anti-slavery reform
ers. who-believed, rightly or wrongly,
that he'was coquetting with the slavehold
ing managers—a belief which his famous
compromise speech in the Senate went far
to confirm.
Our recollections of the prevalent feel
ing in 1850-1 do not coincide with those
of Mr. Adams. At least, in this city and
State, the opinion among those with
whom politics is a duty, and not a pur
suit, was that Mr. Seward co-operated
with the espedientlsts’ wing of the party
rather than with the wing of principle,
and that his success in the nomination
would have contributed, even in spile o
himself, to the invigoration of two class
es of schemers—the Union savers and the
speculators—at that time active, but not
very acceptable to those who had fought
the double battle against slavery in the
Federal sphere, and against partial legis
lation in the Stales. Mr. Chase, Mr. Mc-
Lean, Mr. Dayton, Mr. Oollamer, and
even Mr. Bales, were regarded by that
class as preferable, for these reasons, to
Mr. Seward.
Mr. Adams is wrong, then, in attribut
ing the resuit at Chicago to sinister and
improper influences wholly ; and he is no
less wrong •in his depreciation of Mr.
Lincoln’s blaims. By the scholastic and
bureaucratic standard, Mr. Lincoln was
far inferior to almost any one of the dis
tinguished gentlemen who were his com
petitors ; but by the popular standard—
bis peculiar fitness for the emergency—he
was, as] we think events have proved,
their superior; whilst his career com
pletely justifies the discernment of the
popular instinct. —New York Evening Post.
On Originality*
Scribner's, for May, says : One does feel
sometimes, if one writes,, that there is
nothing left in the world to be original
about; that pretty much everything has
been said, song, described. The cyclical
theory is a dreadful nightmare- *” A * r ‘
think of Livingstone’s finding in the very
heart of Africa just the same sort of a
bird trap that civilizd American boys
catch chippies with. Given, a human

get you original idea down to its simplest
statement, and there is nothing left but
some proverb, familiar as household
words. One doesn’t know whether to be

something that one may be morally, if

In the ancients—he Is sure to read it next
day in the President’s inaugural or George
Elliot’s latest jnovel. These columns of
choice extracts from the best writers, new
and old, which are gelling to be more m
vogue in journalism—are more barrassing
than any special class of reading to a per
son who imagines that he has a,patent on
any one idea, or group of ideas. But
doubtless one should congratulate one’s
self that the seed of truth is sure to
struggle to the light through every soil ;
that deep drainings d >es not necessarily

This is the view I myself am inclined to
take. If Shakspeare happens to say the

my congratulations.
KllSh Prices at the Exposition.
The prospect held out to the Viennese
of having sixty thousand guests or more
quartered on them at a time seems to have
turned all heads in the gay capital on the
Danube. The most absurdly speculative
prices are being asked and given for
houses available to be let out in detail to
the expected strangers. The local hum
orist who fills the place, after a very mild
fashion, of Ihe London Punch, caricatures
the present rage for lettiog-in the follow

dimensions of the breakfast roll in fore

other caricaturist portrays their greed in a
sketch which represents the favorite torn
