offense upon the gallows on Friday morning, and'
in his case, at least. Governor Dix ha& demonstra
ted that hanging is not played out in New York.
—James McElhaney, who murdered his wife in
August lust, was hang in the Saffolk county’
(Mass.) ja;l on Friday morning. The prisoner
since his avowed conversion under the ministra
tion of his religious advisers, maintained a calm
composure, apparently awaiting his doom in a
happy mood.
—The Pennsylvania Reserve Association will
hold its annual meeting in : Gettysburg, In May
nest.
- -Silver and copper ores have been discovered in
North Codoras township, Danphin county. Lumps
of silver of the size of a marble, and of copperas
big as n walnut, were found while sinking a shaft
recently.
- A heavy gale prevailed at Halifax all Thursday
night from the East, and continued Friday witlu
snow and rain
—There was two hundred cases of epizootic at
Los Angelo*. California, and the disease was spread*
lug in all directions.

nor of Louisiana,” advises the organization of Tax

known telegrapher, formerly Superintendent of

the President does not contemplate ap
pointing either ex-Seimtore Cole or Nye
to the Chinese mission, made vacant by
the resignation of Minister Lowe, From
the favorable manner in which the Presi
dent has spoken of ex Representative
John A. Bingham, of Ohio, in connec
tion with this mission, it is believed that
he will appoint him as Lowe’s successor.
Mr. Bingham, it is believed, will be ac
ceptable to the representatives of the Pa-
cific coast interests.
—The Pittsburgh Ojuunerrial says:
The official returns of the late election.in

have been re elected by a majority of two
hundred and eighty two. In addition to
a gain of two members of Congress, the
Republicans also elected tbeir candidate
lor Rallr md Commissioner. Three Re
publicans and one Democrat were chosen
as numbers of the Slate Council, and the
L gislalure will undoubtedly elect a Re
publicm to represent the Second district,
in which there was no choice. The Rc
publicans elected seven Slate Senators and
the Democrats three." In iwo districts no
choice was made, but Republicans will he
chosen by :he Legislature to till the vacan
dies. The House of Representatives will
stand; Republicans, 200 ; Democrats, 148;
Liberal Republican' l ; 4 ;'Republican ma
jority, 48. Another resounding anthem
concerning 'the glorious vitality gf Dc
mocracy” ’s now in order from the pro

—The "Libcntl Republicans" of New
Hampshire polled 0-J9 votes in the late
State election, in a total of sixty thousand.
This is the party which set out a year ago
to revolutionize the country.
.—John Gertig was elected Mayor of Ti
tusvi’.lc on Friday by a large majority.
There were large ma jorities; polled against
the Local Option law.
—The Washington correspondent of the
Cincinnati Gazette tells this: “Oakes
Ames said the wittiest thing, to Mr. Nib
laeV, of Indiana, that has-been said on
this subject. After voting for the previ-
ous question, Mr. Nihlack said,as he pass
ed him, just after voting yes ; "So,Ames,
you go for the increase “Yes,” an
