We arrived at Angar, Batavia, Septem
ber 9, remained there two days, proceed
ing thence to Mauritius, where we look
on water and coal, the ship remaining in
quarantine. From Mauritius we went to
the Cape of Good Hope, In all these'
ports the coolies were kept below, and
while coaling was going on the hatchet
were put on and the hospitals for the sick
kept closed. The heat was intolerable
even in the open air. The voyage of the
popr coolies was one of unimaginable suf
fering. They were flogged, kicked, cuffed
and throughout treated with the greatest
cruelty. The filth and stench were some
thing horrible. The hospitals were not
cleansed during the whole voyage. ~ I
venture to say that in ■ the annals of tble
African slave trade all the horrors of the
“inside passage” never surpassed these ol
this Chinese slave ship. The deaths on
this murderous voyage reached eighty, or
eighty per cent of the number taken
on board at Macao. The deaths doubtless
were caused by the floggings and the hor
rible filthy condition of the ship. We
reached Havana December 1. We were
not put into quarantine, but proceed
ed at once to discharge our cargo of live
freight.
The vessel is to all Intents and purpo
ses German property. She has been char
tered to the Havana Chinese Importing
Company for two trips, one of which is
now fulfilled. There was on board an in
dividual styled, in sailor parlance, a pa
per captain.” He appeared to be tbe
agent of the owners of the coolies, or
something like a supercargo. He had con
irol of the coolies— superintended the flog
ging and other punishment inflicted on
the coolies throughout the voyage. A
more merciless scoundrel never raised a
lash.
The other captain is a German. In the
ship’s papers he is styled sailing master.
The tirst, second and third-niatea are Ger
mans. The carpenter Is"! German, the
chief engineer is American, and the others
Are English and Scoteh. The crew was
composed- ol several but all of
them understanding English. There were
but two or three beside the “paper cap
tain” who spoke Spanish. The languages
used on boird among officers and crew
were English and German, and for com
manding the ship English was used exclu
sively.
