Obituary.—Thomas Jefferson Ayers
died near St. Marysville, Miami county,
Kansas, on Sabbath, May 25th, 1g73,
aged 27 years, 6 months and 20 days.
While engaged in bringing his horses
from the pasture field to go to church,
he was met by his brother in-law, Wil
liam Powell, and stabbed to the heart.
His father and mother hastened to the
place, but he was quite dead. No cause
for the fratricidal act has been given, as
the parties seemed to be on friendly
terms, however, the murderer has been
apprehended, and we anxiously await
the rest:lllot the investigation. The sub
ject of this notico was the son of Mr.
Thomas W. Ayers, formerly of Beaver,
and was beloved by all who knew him
for his amiability of character and good
ness of heart. The aged 4 parents are
nearly beart-broken, and express the
hope of soon meeting their deur boy
again. It saddens one to read the broken
sentences of the mother's letter, convey
ing the mournful. intelligence to her
daughter, Mrs. Wagla, residing in In
dustry; and while we mourn and sym
pathize, we can only pray God to dom
comfort in this great bereavement, and
prepare them all for a happy reunion in
heaven. A Flu Elf D.

Peratilitg'of the isunsidicis appeared as
prosecutor, or rather as the representa
tive of the church. The trial lasted on-
ly five or six hours, 941 the "jurors"
agreed upon the points presented with
remarkable unanmity. The charge
against Mr. Gregg was "conduct unbe
coming a christian," and the evidence
went to show that but a few days had
elapsed after his marriage until be in
formed his wife that he did not desire to
raise a family, and notified her that ev
ery precaution must be taken to avert
what ho regarded as a calamity—that of
her and himself becoming parents.
Mrs. Gregg dissented from her hus
band's views 'in this and other particn
tars, and declined to use the precau
tionary measures suggested by her hus
band. From this time forth a devil
seems to have been in the family. His
conduct towards her was harsh, un
unfeeling, and on one or two occasions
it wag brutal in the extreme. It soon
became evident that his purpose was to
drive her from him, and after his con
duct became positively unbearable she
did leave him and returned to her
friends in Belmont county, Ohio. Soon
after this ho wax- adjudged insane by
ono of the Probate Courts of Ohio, and
sent to the Asylum at Dayton, that
State, for treatment. After being at
that institution Tor live or six months ho
was pronounced cured and discharged.
At thoStatetit . time, ►owever, and for
months past, he has been regarded as
unsound, mentally, as when first sent
to Dayton for treatment. In the mean
time the church took hold of the case,
and charges were preferred against him.
Among these was ono accusing hlm of
"conduct unbecoming a christian" and
the specification set forth the treatment
his wife bad received at his hands. On
these charges the Pittsburgh Conference
tried kim and after hearing the - testimony
that body expelled him from the min
hitry and membership of the M. E.
Church. Ho appealed from that action
of the conference and it was this ques
tion of appeal that was tried in Beaver
on last Wednesday. The decision of
the Conferencowas sustained and Mr.
Gregg is accordiogly no longer a min
ister in the M. E. depornination.
