A few months ago We made mention
of the demolishing of the time-worn
buildings on the corner of Fifth avenue
and market street, ant of the new build
ings to be erected in their stead. In an
ex , :cedingly short time an imposing four
story building has been erected, which
in design and construction, isTully equal
if not superior to any of the kind on
Fifth avenues It is constructed of
coarse brick, cut stone and iron, with
floors laid on the European plan. We
desire to call attention to that
part of the building occupied by Mr. E.
P• Roberts, No. 16 Fifth avenue. on the
first floor. The front of nearly twenty-
five feet present-s a very massive appear
ance, and is finished in solid walnut,
with rich carvings. Tho French Plate
Glass Windows aro of Immense size, be
ing the largest in the city. The vesti
bule is laid with illuminated tile.
on entering the store-room we wore
surprised at the great flood of light
which pervaded it as admitted through
the French plate. The light affords tine
facilities for the display of goods. The
internal arrangement is a complete suc
cess In every particUlar. Seven largo
Walnut Show Cases,_sixty feet in length
adorn the walls. The cases are double
extra oil finished and elaborately carved
and vereered. An immense Plate Glass
Mirror with walnut and inarble base
stands the centre of the room. On
the counters running on each side of
the store are tine Silver Mounqi Show
Cases, measuring forty feet in all. The
gas fixtures, flooring and counters, are
all in the hest of style. With the Watch
Department, C.ock room and Private
()dice we complete the outfit and turn
oar attention to the display of good., the
stock having been purchased especially
for the opening of the now store, wan a
great attraction. Tho fine watches, rich
jewelry, silverware and "yen] antique•'
bronzes, as displayed, was grand beyond
description. Of the general stock, as ox
hil•fted. it may ho truthfully said that it
is the choicest and most elaborate e% er
brought to the city. our verdict is with
the hundreds who have visited the •torn
during the past few days—"that is the

Mr. Roberts has proven himself fully
alive to the interests of the city in open

A mysterious combination of cir
cumstances has recently been brought
to light in North Beaver township, this
'county, which caused considerable ex
itement; and as it is one of the roost re
markable occurrences which has lately
come within the range of our observa
tion, we shall give account of it for the
gratif cation of nor readers. A short
time sloven middle was left at the barn
of Mr. Hugh Hope, which after remain
ing a few days, was secretly taken away
by sight. Soon after this, a dead horse,
and also a dead dog was found in the
woods belonging to Mr. Sampson. It
was found upon examination that the
horse had been killed by being knocked
on the head, but strange as it may ap
pear, no one in that locality had ever be
fo're seen the lirse. But hero comes the
srtangest part of the story. At no great
distance from the dead animals, a new
made grave about si E t ff et in length,
carefully covered with was found,
which on being opened, disclosed the
fact that it was only two feet deep, but
that it was tilled with different earth
i from that in which it was made. Noth
ing further was discovered. No ono
conid give any information tending to
throw any light on the subject. The in
dications aro that a dark deed of cold
blooded murder has been perpetrated,
' but all is its yet wrapped in a thied cloud
of Impenetrable mystery. Wo anxious

GENTLBMEN:—In reply to your com
munication of Oct. 12th, MI addressed
to me, I have to say that on the 12th day
of September, 1872, a petition for the ap
pointment of return inspectors of elec
tion for the borough of Beaver Falls, was
filed in my office, signed by several cit
izens of said borough, and asking the ap
pointment of George W. Nelson and
chrfstian Moulter.Aboth republicans) as
4 4
such inspectora said I thought there
ought to be one man from each party ap
pointed, but that I would see abopt the
matter. Some time after this, I met J.
L. B. Dawson and H. C. Patterson, at
which time they asked me what I had
done about the appointment of addition
al election officers for the borough of
Beaver Falls. I said I bad not eoneln
tied; they then gave as a reason for ask ,
log the appointment of two republicans,
that with the full republican vote Out,
they could elect three out of the four in
spectors to elect, and they thought they
were entitled to as many by appoint
ment as they could elect by ballot. I
told them I would not be In a hurr'y
making the appointment, a:.d that if 1
appointed one from each party, they'
could suggest one and the democrats the
other. About ten days or two weeks bo
foro the election, I asked the advice of
J. S. Buten, who passed the law, what I
should do, and he advised me to ap
point one man from each party; I said
to him, you tell Dawson and Patterson
what you think about this matter, for I
thought it my duty to appoint one Re
publican and ono Democrat, and I did
not want to offend them. This he prom
ised to do if ho saw them. The next
day he told too ho had seen Dawson in
Beaver, and had insisted upon the
apptfintment of one man from each par
ty: that Dawson had told him to have
me withhold the appointment until ho
consulted Pattfison and others.
The next day t '- ) ie (Mr. Ratan) handed
me a note addressed to him which,-was
as near as I can recollect, as follows t_
"iloN. J. S. lICTAIS, Dear Sir:—]lave
James M. Allen and Ira Ransom, sr. ap
pointed return inspectors for Beaver
Falls borough. [Signed,] J. L. B. D."
I asked :4r. Rutan who Allen wits.
Ile replied he did not know; that he
knew hansom; who was the leiding
Democrat of Beaver Falls. Which note
I carried in toy pocket or loft in my
table drawer until the evening of Oct.
if , 72, when I wrote out yike certificate
appointing Ira lIMISOIII, 4.1.( (Democrat)
I then started to Ito Post.otlice, and
wet J. Dawson and li. C. Patter
son on the pavement in fr nt of the'
Court-ID - tom when one of them asked
me if I had made- the appointment of
election officers Gil' Beaver Falls. I told
him I had. Ile then said, "Give me the
certificate for our man." I said the cer
tificate was not made out, but if they
would wait a few minutes I would
write out one for them, chick they
agreed to do if it did not take me too
long. I then went to my office and wrote
out a certificate for James M. Allen and
gave it to Mr. Dawson, and my impres
sion is that he did not road it, but put it
into his pocket and started home,
was then late in the evening; and I pre
sume B. Daugherty, esq., Chairman
of Democratic County Committee, seen
Allen's certificate, for he was standing
looking on the paper while I wrote a
part of it. Mr. J. M. Phillia [Democrat]
was also standing near me, but can't say
that lie seen what I Was writing. That
same evening, before 1 had retired, I
waiinformed I had appointed the wrong
ma return inspector for the borough of
Beaver Falls. " Why," I said, " I had
appointed the man they 'requested me
to." My informant said he know noth
ing about that; all he knew wtts that they
wanted the appointment I had made re
voked, and George W. Nelson—the man
named in their petition to Court—ap
pointed. I said, "All right, I will make
the change now;" and the next morning
I went to my office and wrote out his
certificate; which certificate I took to
Beaver Falls on same day which it was
issued.
And in conclusion I will sa`y that I
made the appointment of James M. Al
len in good faith, supposing ho was a
bona fide citizen of said botough; and I
revoked the appointment with no other
idea than that a mistake had been made.

some of the efforts of an eminent colored

Others thought that the spirit Of our
friend, the Rev. Richard 'Gardner pow,
sessed the orator. Quay, had ho been i
there, might have had an opportunity to
see from whence the genius who did so
"much service in the State campaign
just closed," derived his groat intellect.
But Quay was not there. His "olfacto

eclipsed by that delivered by Major

(probably from his close proximity to
the orator who had just preceded him)
announced the fact "dat dere was a goat

Thomas is destined to play an import

that oven that is sweet and pleasant in
comparison with some of the sloughs

At last, to the relief Of the troops, the
