' Mr. Etorroa ennobling It is to a
man, to be governed by stern principle,
in.the presumes of the unprincipled, who
never consider how mean a thing it is to
act utterly regardless of principle; of
honor, or uprightness: •
We have men of this stamp among us ;
and it is to beloped that their noble ex
ample, and high appreciation may con
duce much to multiply their number all
aver our happy laud. .
One of this sort, said to me, the other
day, that Ae had been twice a candidate
for Courtrai and, twice for the Judge
ship; but, had never condesceuded to
treat any matt to vote fur,him ; or, to
buy In any shape, any man's patronage.
Be never drank himself, nor, would he
offer liquor to anotheriat any time, un
der any eircumstanceir. Be related to me
the following fact: Ina certain-village,
when the election was to be held, -when
he was a candidate, a friend stepped ug
to him and said, "Well Mr. —, I am
a friend of yours, and I intend to vote
for you. I suppose you will treat us
now." Others being'prment at the dine
and place, whose attention, of course was
arrested to ethe forthcoming dialogtia.
After a moments pause, Mr.
lag him in ttie ace, replied: "Why
friend, I don't drink myself, and whisky
is s nasty, dirty thing and, besides that.
It Ii injurious ; I would not like to treat
a friend of mine, or any one else, to srhat '
I 'despise, and believe . to be hurtful."—
And, just let rue say to you further,
friend ; how- would you feel after the
election ,If some one would say of you
. "that fellow sold his vote for a gill of
whisky." But, now see here, my friend,
to you know that it Is not stingicess
on my part that etifillraiternersinecnne •
to treat you, as you wish me. if you
will now hunt up a dozen of your
friends-we expect to have dinner here
presently—and bring them along. I
wilipay the bill. But I beard no more
alter that, about treating; nor did
this man come - back for his dinner.
I did not know however, but that ho
might make use of this to my detriment
in the election ; so I was careful to no
tice the returns subsequently, from that
township, and found that I was as suer
cessful there ai everywhere else. Prin

Lodge Lo.of G. June 10th, 1871:
Wuzazas, God In his mysterious
providence has oame very near our

our dear sister ro
Emma Burton. by
In the
contemplation of this sad bereavement,
we deeply mourn that one possessing so
many excellencies of character, so much
love fer the cause of temperance, one
whom we loved for her many noble
qualities, and Who was endeared to us
by the strongest ties of sympathy and
affection. While we bow submissively
to our Heavenly Father's will, we desire
to' express oar heart-felt sorrow coca-
atoned by her sudden death, therelbre,
Resolved, That in this sad dlipensa
tion of providence we are all remanded
of the certainty of death, and the neces
sity of preparation for that life which is
-eternal.
Resolved, That as sister Burton was a
pattern worthy of example, and as she
was so unselfish andsernest in her la-
boss for the Temperanoe Ciiise, so will
we with renewed vigor imitate her ex
ample
by raising higher the standard of
total abstinence.
Resolved, That we sympathize with
the bereaved family i n thlsbour of their
affliction, and would commend. them to
Him who le ever ready to comfort the
sorrowing ones.
Resolved, That as a tribute - to the
memory of our departed sister, our -Its
