A SPECIAL dispatch from Wilkes
barre, Pa., dated at midnight Satur
day night, states that late in the after
noon a fire broke out, in the Pine
Ridge colliery, two mile; and a half
above that place. The fire caught at
the entrance of the mine and burned
with fearful rapidity. The wildest
extßement prevailed, ate thirty men
were at the bottom of the mine.
The fire originated from an explosion
of lire damp. About one year and
a half ago this mine took fire and
burned furiously for snveral weeks,

tent writer has promised a minute
history of the battle of Gettysburg,
much of the data for which ho has
obtained on the present occasion
from the lips of those who so promi
tiently figured in the 'contest which
proved the death-blow to the rebel

FINANCES FOR
OUR STATE
FORTY YEARS
We have seen in several of our ex
changes claims set up on behalf of.
the Democratic party that its. Duni
agement of Pennsylvania finances
had been wiser and more statesman
like than that of the Republican ad
ministrations. Let us briefly state
our observations In this: respect.
Forty years since, to wit, in 1829, the
State improvement system, as It has
been called, was well under. way..
During the ensuing thirty years the
Democratic party had nearly uncon
trolled sway in this State. Three
executives, to wit, Ritner, Johnson
and Pollock, had been elected by the
opposition, but in all the thirty years
not three can be selecited when both
brunches of the Legislature were con
trolled against the Democratic party.
The result of that policy was the fas
tening upon the Commonwealth of
' a State debt of fully forty millions of
dollars, and a State tax upon real es
tate of three mills, which yielded
about $1,800,000 annually. We will
charge the 'Republicans with ten
years management of our finances.
Governor Packer, elected by the
Democrats, was Governor in 1859
and 1860; yet the Legislature since
1859 may be said to have been In Re
publican hands. The Republican ad
ministration therefore bad to encoun
ter it debt of over slo,ooo,4NNl,and fully
$5,000,000 of eigraordinary expenses
ill putting down the Democratic Re
bellion of Jeff. Davis & Co. They
have also had to encounter an ex
peme that will reach $1.4,000,000, in
