N BEST DOGS FOR
CHILDREN 10 PLAY WITH.
Nhat is the safest dog to buy as
ymate and companion for a
all child? Dog experts and child
«cialists have just completed a
dy of 80 distinct breeds of dogs
ed in the official register of the
jerican Kennel Club, and have
ected ten of them which they
ommend as desirable pets for
ldren.
jere is the list, prepared by them
the suggestion of the Woman's
me Companion, with a few words
comment on each breed:
the Newfoundland is a gentle
nt, who makes a patient compe-
it big brother for any child, but
not fairly be kept in the city or
er limited quarters.
fhe English setter and the Irish
ter are “gentlemen” of the dog
rid, patient and faithful with
dren.
fhe Samoyede, snowy white, is
ervedly called “the biteless dog
h the human brain.”
Among the terriers, particular
tability is conceded to the Irish,
-ehaired, fox, Scalyham, Scottish
i Cain. All of these, and es-
sally the first two, are keen
igh-coated up-and-coming aristo-
ts, splendid playmates for chii-
n.
Last but perhaps best where mer-
but rather gentle and affectionate
allish dog is desired, comes the
‘ker spaniel. He is an outstand-
. choice for a small child inclined’
timidity where animals are
ned.

A wide selection of tossters, wp
pends very largely upon two factors: |
where you
is like. The larger dogs need plen-
ty of space in order to keep happy
and in good condition, and conse-
quently should not be tried in the
city. The others are all right for
town, suburban or country life.
The closer the similarity of dis-
position in child and dog, the better
the chances of their appealing to
each other. Energetic active chil-
dren of quieter type, the Newfound-
land, setter and cocker spaniel are
suitable. The Scottish and Cairn
terriers are so adaptable that they
get along splendidly with children |
of all temperaments.

ing from a total of six each from
Cameron and Forest counties to 663
from Allegheny county. One hun-
dred sixty-three students are from

Weighed down as we are with our
domestic worries it is a struggle to
turn our eyes abroad. Geneva and
Japan seem far, far away from the
United States.
Yet what is happening over there
is, in the long view, even more im-

A great crisis in
mankind's long struggle for perma-
nent peace is now impending.
Since 1918 the hope of the world
has been to find a method by which
another great war can be prevented.
That the horrors of the Western
‘front would be nothing as compared
! with those of the next war is sens-
ed by all who live today. That
! virtual suicide of civilization would
be the result, and dark ages be the
lot of humanity, is the settled con-
viction in every war college of the
| world.
Stripped of its technicalities, the
League-Manchurian crisis means
this:
Either peace will be restored
through the agency of other nations
or the world's only machinery for
peace will be shown up as futile.
And that futility, once revealed,
would mean an armament race such
as the world has never seen. That
in turn would bring the
tions back to where they were be-
fore Sarajevo. And when War
came, as it would, there would
come chaos and the downfall of
civilization. .
What is happening in Geneva and
Japan today, therefore, is bigger
than Manchuria. It is the test of
the world’s one and only agency for
peace. The entire effort against
war, accumulated over the cen-
turies, is at stake.
Let the negotiations win, let the
| world be convinced that the League

machinery, will work, and the
will have been taken.
Let them fail—but they must not!
Geneva and Japan are not remote
points. They are local stories to-
day, with a
every man capable of bearing arms,
and of very real interest to every
' mother, wife or sweetheart of such
'a man, in the whole United States.
