When the glad tidings of his good luck reached him Richard no doubt thought them the most en- Kerr-aging he had ever received in his life. —Practicaly complete returns from the State show that Butler, the Radical candidate for State Treagurer, has been elected over Daniel O. Barr, Democrat, by about 45,000. Barr carried the State out- side of Philadelphia, Allegheny and Lancaster counties. —Snow fell to a depth of about four inches on Wednesday night. —As the Watchman goes to press Mr. Lane is taking to wife Miss Tamazine Thomas, oldest daughter of Mr. Jacob V. Thomas, of this place. Mr. Lane is our well known young banker and Miss Thomas is a handsome young lady and both are very much in love. They appear to be suited to each other and have the best wishes of the community. —The many friends of Mr. Frank McCoy, of the iron works, and Miss Ella Allison of Potter's Mills, enjoyed a gala time at the latter place on Thursday of last week, the occasion being the wed- ding of the parties named. Frank, of course, looked his best and he can look real well at times, but the bride is spoken of as being realy beautiful. There were a great many people at the wedding, but the large old Potter mansion, the home of the bride, embraced them all without crowding. —At the election last Tuesday, Shannon, Democrat, and Kline, Re- publican, were elected jury Commis- sioners, over Hunter, the Green- backer. Adams, Democrat, had a majority of 847 over Thompson, Re- publican, for county coroner. —Last Monday the following named hunters left Howard: H. C. Holter, Manuel Pletcher, Samuel Pletcher, Henry Smith and John D. Hall for a week’s hunt on Beech Creek. On arriving at the creek at the mouth of Panther run a camp was soon errected, using a 20x30 canvas for roofing. On Tuesday morning J. B.,, and Hudson Holter joined the party. Wednesday morn- ing they left camp for a hunt, tak- ing the dogs along to run the deer. They had been gone only a few hours when one of the men on watch ncticed much smoke rising from the location of the camp. He hastend thither to find it enveloped in flames and all their bedding, pro- visions and‘ extra clothing was burned up. It is supposed the camp was set afire by parties known to have made threats to burn the oye of anyone going in there to unt, : — The Harrisburg Patriot has the following complimentary notice of the address of our fellow towns- man, Hon. John B. Linn, at the un- veiling of the Brady monument. Hon. John B. Linn, ex-Secretary of the Commonwealth, was the ora- tor of the day at the unveiling of the beautiful monument to Capt. John, Brady, at Muncy. The town ‘was ablaze with enthusiasm and the ceremony witnessed by a tremendous crowd. Mr. Linn'’s address was pre- pared in that scholarly style which characterizes all of his literary work and was delivered with pleasing ef- fect. —The Reformed church has se- cured Rev J. F. DeLong, of Wil- liamsport, as their future pastor. He will preach his first sermon to them in December. —The Milesburg Greenbackers held their own on Tuesday, giving their candidate for State Treasurer 6 more votes than either the Dem- ocratic or Republican candidate received. .—Fires were necessary at the polls on Tuesday and the patriotic window book men stood beside them warming one side and then the other. —It grieves us to record the death of little Charles Derstine, one of the twin boys of Mr. John Der- stine, of this place. The dear little fellow died of brain fever on Mon- doy morning last. He was six years old in July and visited us so often here in the Watchman office that we all became very much at- tached to him and his brother, too, for they were always together. —Ex-sheriff T. M. Hall died at his home in Milesburg, on Saturday last, at the age of 73. He had never recovered from the hurt on his head that he suffered about a year ago when he and William Marks were thrown from their buggy while driving from here to Milesburg. Though he was a ho- tel man nearly all his life he had never tasted liquor or beer, and didn’t smoke or chew. ——The grand jury convened on Wednesday morning of this week to consider the bills of indictment for the November term of court.
