DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS
WIN IN CENTRE.
A Large Vote Results in Close Con-
test and Victories for Both
Parties.
With 2074 more votes out than were
polled at the primaries Centre coun-
ty closed the most closely contested
campaign it has had in years with a
division of the county offices among
the candidates of both parties.
At the primaries 11870 votes were
polled. The largest number on record
up to that time so that the increased
poll last Tuesday has ‘broken that
record.
The closeness of the contest is cer-
tainly proof of and complimentary to
the voters of Centre county who are
coming to see that partisanship is a
poor guide in the selection of local
officials.
According to the unofficial returns
the successful candidates are Judge,
M. Ward Fleming, Republican. Ap-
parent majority “168.
Sheriff,. H. E. Dunlap, Democrat.
Apparent majority 2218.
Prothonotary, S. Claude Herr, Dem-
ocrat. Apparent majority 27.
Treasurer, Lyman H. Smith, Dem-
ocrat. Apparent majority 869,
Register, H. A. Rossman, Republi-
can, Apparent majority 1245,
Commissioners, Newton I. Wilson,
Republican; Howard H. Miles, Repub-
lican; John 8. Spearly, Democrat.
Auditors, Samuel B. Holter, Repub-

Generally the election was without
unusual excitement, though it is
thought there were some districts in
the county in which it was not con-
fiucted in rigid conformity with the

Child Dies of Burns.
Doris Ruth Haagen, two years old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry
Haagen, of Yarnell, died at the Cen-
tre County hospital on Wednesday
morning as the result of burns sus-

ing down stairs she was horrified to
discover her daughter enveloped in
flames. She succeeded in smothering
the fire but not until the child was :
terribly burned. She was brought to
the Centre County hospital but died

to the parents a number of brothers
and sisters survive. Burial will be
made today in the Advent cemetery.

Found Dead on State Highway.
James Rupert, aged 50 years, of
Beech Creek, was found dead on the
State highway south of the Beech
Creek bridge Sunday morning, Cor-
oner Heaton, of Philipsburg, inwesti-
gated the case and expressed the be-
lief that the man had been struck and
run over by a hit-and-run driver some
time during the night.
Several persons in an automobile
called at the office of a Beech Creek
physician and said there was a man
seriously injured on the highway
south of the bridge, but hurried on
‘without giving any particulars, it is

Brooks-Doll Post Elects Officers.
At the annual meeting of the
Brooks-Doll post of the American
Legion, held on Monday evening, the
following officers were elected for the
ensuing year:

McMEEN.—Mrs. Nancy Jane Mec-
Meen, almost a centenarian and one of
the county’s most remarkable women,
passed away at 8:30 o'clock on Mon-
day morning, at the home of her
grandson, Major H. Laird Curtin, at
Curtin. She had been ill for a month
with a general breakdown and owing:
to her advanced age had no recup-
erative power.
Mrs. McMeen’s maiden name was
Nancy Jane Lipton and she was born.
at Milesburg on August 27th, 1829
hence had lived to the remarkable age
of 98 years, 2 month and 11 days. As
a young woman she married Dr. Wil-
liam L. McMeen, a practicing physi-
cian, and their brief married life was
spent in Milesburg, where Dr. Me-
Meen died in 1854. For a score or
more of years Mrs. McMeen continued
to make her home in Milesburg but
for the past fifty years she had lived
with her daughter, Mrs. H. R. Cur-
tin, at Curtin.
As descendant of a family that had
much to do with the early history of
Centre county, a woman of education
and refinement. Mrs. ‘ McMeen was
naturally an interesting personage,
and her passing away is the severing
of a link with the days when ecivili-
| zation was yet in swaddling clothes.
"Her childhood were the days of the
| tallow dip and the bridle path and
89 | she lived to see electricity turned in-
(to light and travel by airplane,
Mrs. McMeen’s only surviving child
iis her daughter, Mrs. H. R. Curtin,
, but she leaves four grand-children,
J. M. Curtin, of Pittsburgh; John, of
Bellefonte; H. L., of Curtin, and Mrs,
T. V. Hodges; H. L., of Nottingham,
{Pa. She has fifteen great grand-
children.
| Funeral services were held at the
Curtin home at three o’clock on Wed-
nesday, burial being made in the
Curtin cemetery,

JAMISON.—Mrs. Jennie H. Jam:-
son, widow of the late T. B. Jamison,
of Spring Mills, passed away at her
home in that place, last Friday, as
the result of a stroke sustained the.
Tuesday previous. She hag been 1n.
good health up until the day she was
stricken, hence her death was quite
a shock to the members of her family,
She was a daughter of James and
Mary Murray Miller and was born at.
Pine Grove Mills on December 29th,
1844, hence was 82 years, 10 months
and 6 days old. Her girlhood life was.
| spent at the home of her birth but
ever since her marriage to Mr, Jam-
ison she had made her home at Spring:
Mills. She was a devoted member ot
the Spring Mills Presbyterian chureh,
a kind, hospitable and most lovable
woman, who will be sadly missed not
only by the members of her family
but by many others who had been
efitted by her kindnesses and friend--
ship during the many years she had
been a resident of Spring Mills,
Mr. Jamison died eight years ago
but surviving her are four children,
Mrs. Gertrude Martin, of Martins-
burg; Mrs. R. A. Miller, of Tyrone;
Mrs. R. E. Hockman, of Philadelphia,
and Edward T. Jamison, at home. She
also leaves one step-daughter, rs,
J. L. Peters, of Bellefonte.
Funeral services were held at her
late home on Monday afternoon by
her pastor, Rev. J. Max Kirkpatricx,
and burial was made in the Presby-
terian cemetery, at Spring Mills,

MALLORY.—Donald George Mal-
lory, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph G. Mallory, passed away at the
Centre County hospital, about 3:30
o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, fol-
lowing a months illness with pneu-
monia. It was just one month ago
yesterday that he came home ill from
State College, where he was 2 Sopho-
more, and his illness quickly devel-
cped into a serious attack of pneu-
monia. His condition had been criti-
jcal for several weeks and on opera-
tion was deemed the one hope of sav-
ing his life. He was taken to the hos-
pital on Tuesday and his death on
Wednesday occurred during the ope-
ration. : :
Donald was born in Bellefonte and
I was nineten years old in August. He
was a bright and gentlemanly young
man and his death is a severe blow to
{ the family. In addition to his parents
{ he is survived by one brother and two
| sisters, Edgar Mallory, of Roanoke,
i Va.; Mrs. Marvin Rothrock, of Belle-
fonte, and Helen, at home.
| Funeral services will be held at his
{late home on North Spring street,
Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. In-
terment in the Union cemetery.

SMULL.—George H. Smull, for
many years a well known resident of
Smullton, Brush valley, died at his
home in Williamsport, on Sunday, as
the result of lung congestion follow-
ing a nervous breakdown.
He was a son of Reuben and Louisa
Smull and was born at Smullton fifty-
seven years ago. For many years he
had been engaged in the real ostate
and insurance business. He married
Miss Blanche Stover who survives with
no children. He also leaves his mother,
Mrs. Chestie Smull, of Rebersburg.
The remains were taken to Rebers-
burg where burial was made on Wed-
nesday.
