3 —~Srho em Bellefonte, Pa., July 2, 1926. Fresh Air and Sunshine Best Summer Tonics. “There is a growing tendency on the part of thinking city parents to afford their children a maximum of fresh air and sunshine during the summer months. This is evidenced by the thousands of children who annual- ly find their way into the hundreds of organized camps throughout the coun- try. There is scarcely an excuse for the average child not to get its share ' of summer camp life these days inas- much as these institutions range from the aristocratic organizations found in the northern sections of the United States down to the Y. M. C. A,, Y. W. C. A. and church and school camps close by your own city. “In addition to the disciplinary and instructive features attached to all or- ganized summer camps, the compan- ionship is a factor which will assist very greatly in the character develop- ment of the child. But however valu- able these features may be considered to be, the big factor connected with camp life is the chance to breathe in both night and day the freshest and purest kind of air and to receive the health giving and unequalled benefits of the direct sunlight during the day time. “In Pennsylvania at the Sanatoria of Cresson and Mont Alto hundreds of little people receive the benefits which nature is anxious to give to all chil- dren if it gets but a chance to do it. “The remarkable and unbelievable results of the fresh air and direct sun- light on these sick and near-sick lit- tle people is an unanswerable argu- ment for the little child to have its fling at nature during the summer season. One does not need to ba a sufferer from tuberculosis or pre-dis- posed in that direction in order to ob- tain the good which the sun and out- door life can bestow. “In the majority of the camps in Pennsylvania, as well as elsewhere, the children are permitted to run about and play in a minimum of cloth- ing and a maximum of physical ex- posure. This results in giving the direct rays of the sun a chance to bronze the bodies of the little folks and to charge their physical system with health-giving and health-build- ing energy. “Don’t molly-coddle your young boy or your girl. Two weeks in the greqt outdoors in an organized camp is bet- ter than a three month’s trip in an automoblie for your child. ” “The foundations for long life and good life are laid in the. formative period, which is during childhobd. Give nature a fair chance to do for your children what it so easily and so willingly will do. Let the sunshine paint their little bodies a copper col- or. Let their lungs breathe in the air of the summer out-doors. It is their ight-and it is your, duty. For your children’s sake, make friends with the sunshine and camp life.”—Dr. R. H. McCutcheon, Mont Alto. —Subscribe for the “Watchman.” Mercantile Appraisement.
