    BIG VICTORY FOR VARE
PREDICTED IN COLLIER'S. |
Weekly’s Observer Thinks Pinchot
Votes Will go Democratic in Case
of Defeat.
New York, May 10.—Vare will win
in the Pennsylvania Republican Sena-
torial primary on May 18, Walter
Davenport, of Collier's Weekly, de-
clares in the current issue.
Mr. Davenport makes his prediction
following an intensive survey of the |
primary contest in Pennsylvania and
interviews with scores of supporters
of the three candidates, Senator Pep-
per, Governor Pinchot and Congress
man Vare, as well as first-hand inves-
tigation in the various voting strong-
holds.
Winning of the Senatorial nomina-
tion, he reports, is an incident in the
larger fight for control of the Repub-
lican party in Pennsylvania, Vare’s at-
tack on the Mellon political interests
being an attempt to maintain Phila-
delphia control against the gravita-
tion of political supremacy to Pitts-
burgh. He points to Senator Pepper's
defeat by 50,000 votes in Allegheny
county in 1924 as significant, as also
the indorsement of Beidleman, Vare's
candidate for Governor against Fish-
er, the Mellon candidate, by such poli-
ticians as Joseph N. Mackrell, Alle-
gheny County Register of Wills, as an
indication of the trend among politi-
cians in the congested cities.
His final conclusion is that the mass
vote will swing to the wet margin,
the World Court and similar issues
having no large mass appeal in face
of sentiment for modification of the
Volstead act. Political Adv.
Boalsburg Stricken With Measles.
A general epidemic of measles has
broken out at Boalsburg and every-
body seems to be catching them—
young and old alike.
Last week both the primary and
grammar schools had to be closed on
account of the epidemic and so many
of the High school students have been
infected or quarantined that there has
been talk of closing it also.

Secretary Wilson says:
“I am campaigning with Judge Porter because he comes nearest the ideal
for Governor of any of the candidates with whom | have been in contact in this
campaign,”’—Bellefonte, April 28, 1926.
The Pittsburgh Post, April 20, 1926, said “the high purpose for the upbuild-
ing of the party” is shown by Mr. Wilson's touring the State with Judge Porter
“to impress upon Democrats the great opportunity and duty that have been
presented them this year.”
