INTRODUCTIONS AND HOW
TO MAKE THEM.
By L. A. Miller.
I was asked by a friend to give my
views on introductions, and how to
make them. This is a rather embar-
rassing proposition. Much good has
been accomplished, and also great
harm has resulted through over-doing
the proposition.
In spite of everything that has been
done in the way of precautions and
guards against the intrusions into so-
ciety of persons objectionable in many
ways, those people not only get into
good social circles but often take a
prominent place therein. This is the
main reason why the greater care
should be observed in the matter of
introudctions. That introductions are
a necessity is conceded; if people
were not introduced in a proper and
formal way the large majority would
pass their lives without acquaintance,
knowing none outside of their rela-
tives. :
Indiscriminate introductions are a
horror, and it is thought by some
that there should be a law against it.
Many persons have a mania for intro-
ducing friends to every one they meet;
the consequence being that undesira-
ble acquaintances are violently and
rudely thrust upon inoffensive men
and women who have done nothing to
merit such barabrous treatment.
When two persons have been for-
mally introduced, certain definite ob-
ligations rest upon them which good
breeding requires them to honor.
They may not meet without recogni-
tion; they must treat each other civ-
illy, and, if they do not desire the ac-
quaintance to go beyond formality,
the fact may be signified without
rudeness, by a polite bow. This is
modified in the case of ball room in-
troductions, it being optional with the
lady whether she afterwards recog-
nize a gentleman with whom she may
have danced. Nor does etiquet re-
quire that gentlemen who have met
casually at the house, or in the rooms
of mutual friend, shall recognize each
other afterward. They certainly may
do so if they like, but if they choose
to do otherwise, no social rule is brok-
en. When young people are introdue-
ed to one older in years, and secure in
social position, it is a graceful act on
the part of the latter to extend his
hand, and to speak a pleasant word or
two by way of encouragement.
Rioters Must Serve Jail Sentences.
Ebensburg, Pa., Jouly 1.—Refusing
the motions to set aside judgment and
for a new trial in the cases of eigh-
teen alleged members of the Ku Klux
Klan and ten Lilly residents, convict-
ed of affray and unlawful assemblage
in connection with the fatal rioting at
Lilly, the night of April 5th, Judge
Thomas D. Finletter, of Philadelphia,
today sentenced the twenty-eight men
to pay the costs of the prosecution
and to undergo two years’ imprison-
ment in the county jail, the terms dat-
ing from their incarceration.
In the cases of three other Lilly
residents convicted of the same
charges Judge Finletter granted a
motion for arrest of judgment. These
three men are Jeremiah Leahey, John
P. Bradley and Robert Monahan.
From the bench Judge Finletter
stated that he did not wish to inflict
cruel sentence and said “but the fact
cannot be overlooked that the defend-
ants’ actions brought about the death
of three Lilly citizens.”
Antitoxin Forcibly to Cut
Diphtheria.
Lebanon, Pa.—Having forcibly ad-
ministered antitoxin to members of
the faith tabernacle, a cult of faith
curers, local health authorities are
hopeful of checking the spread of
diphtheria, which in three weeks has
caused the deaths of nine persons. All
the victims were members of families
of the faith tabernacle and all, the au-
thorities declared, had been denied
medical attention.
Five of the deaths occurred in the
family of Mrs. Charles Roth, her hus-
band and four children dying since
April 21. One of the children died
while the funeral of another was be-
ing held. Mrs. Roth had refused med-
ical treatment for her family. She
and four surviving children were in-
oculated, Although she would not give
verbal consent, but submitted without
protest. a vo uve | Hil

Pest Threatens State Plum Stock.
Plums will be scarce in this part of
northeastern Pennsylvania unless
some means is found to kill off the
blackknat pest, local experts say.
It is playing havoc with local or-
chards and this district, which sup-
plies many towns in the east with the
fruit, will not have many to ship this
summer. Farmers up to this time
have been forced to cut down all in-
fected trees and burn the twigs.
