Republicans Win Only Senatorial Contest, in Vermont. Democrats were elected Tuesday in all three States where there were gu- bernatorial elections—Kentucky, Ma- ryland and Mississippi. . Vermont, where the only Senator- ial contest was held, returned a Re- publican—Porter H. Dale, who defeat- ed Park H. Pollard, cousin of Presi- dent Coolidge. In the seven contests for the House, the Democrats won four and the Re- publicans three, one of the Republi- can victories being an upset in which former Representative Fairchild de- feated his Democratic opponent for the place made vacant by the death of J. Vincent Ganley in the Twenty- fourth New York district. Party alignment was unchanged in the oth- er Congressional elections. The victory of the Democrats in Kentucky, where Representative Wil- Dawson, represented sweeping of a pendulum which at the last election swept Governor Edwin P. Morrow, Republican, into office. Mr. Fields’ majority was decisive and he will have 2 Democratic Legislature to support im. Governor Ritchie, re-elected in Maryland over Alexander Armstrong, Republican, had an increased majori- ty over his first election. H. L. Whitfield, Democrat, had no opposition in Mississippi. In New York State the Republicans retained control of the General As- sembly but the Democratic judiciary ticket in Manhattan and the Bronx was swept into office, overwhelming the Republican and Independent tick- et supported by William: Randolph Hearst. The soldiers’ bonus appar- ently was carried and the hypo-elec- tric power project beaten. _ ‘Local issues were voted on in var- ious sections of the country. Vir- ginia turned down a $50,000,000 bond issue for good roads. Ohio elected mayors supported by the Ku Klux Klan in Youngstown, Portsmouth, Akron and several smaller cities. Philadelphia returned W. Freeland Kendrick, Republican, as mayor by an overwhelming majority. In Illinois Miss Mary M. Bartelme, the first woman to be elevated to a Cook county. She is a Republican and led the ticket. The Republicans elected 11 and the Democrats 9 judges of the Superior court. The New Jersey Legislature re- mained in the Republican column not- vithstanding the vigorous campaign waoed by Governor Silzer, Democrat, for a Democratic law making body. American party candidates who wag- ed a fight in Utah under the slogan “Separation of church and State” were beaten. Mayor Ro'-h, Republican, of San Francisco, apparently was re-elected. The results of the Senatorial and liam J. Fields defeated Charles I. corcuit court judge, was elected in. Congressional elections will leave the two Houses of Congress with this line-up: House, Republicans, 225; Democrats, 204; Socialists, 1; Inde- pendents, 1; Farmer-Labor, 1; vacan- cies 3. Republican majority 18. The Republican majority in the Senate will remain at six. PINE GROVE MENTIONS. Assessor E. C. Musser is now at work making his dog assessment. Mrs. George P. Irvin is in Tyrone helping to take care of a sick sister. Miss Irene Pletcher, of the Branch, is visiting her home folks at Howard. John G. Miller came home from Philadelphia for the election on Tues- ay., ; Allen Burwell came over from Ty- rone, on Monday, after his share of small game. : Farmer O. P. Bloom had one of his best brood sows killed by a passing automobilist. J. B. Rudy, of Shaver’s Creek, was here early in the week looking for a tenant for his farm.
