A woman who is really famous in
her set for her clever and original par-
ties gave a tin shower to a friend who
had been married ten years last week,
and it was such a successful affair,

Take a pan, a colander, or something like
that,
And trim it up so it looks like a hat.
Her name and address and the hour
of the luncheon were written under
the verse. No one would believe, un-
less she saw them with her own eyes,
the creations that those ten young
women turned out. It was marvelous.
The hostess asked as many of them as
could to send the “hats” around early,
and she had one room in the house fix-
ed up like a display room in a millin-
ery shop.
When they arrived on the noon of
the day there wasn’t a sign of a show-
er anywhere.

Fight the Forest Fires.
Harrisburg, Pa.—Every timberland
owner in, Centre county, with hold-
ings of 500 acres or more, has been
sent a letter by Gifford Pinchot, the
State’s chief forester, requesting as-
sistance in the prevention of forest
fires. A copy of the Forest Fire Haz-
ard Law of Pennsylvania, was mailed
with these letters, together with a
statement of the attitude of the De-
enforcement. Commenting on the en-
forcement of the Act, Commissioner
Pinchot said:
“My responsibility, under the law,
is clear. I am very anxious, however,
not to use harsh measures. I am con-
vinced that the great majority of
' Pennsylvania timberland owners will
. be any, can
be glad, as good citizens, to comply
with the law when their attention is
definitely directed to their responsi-
bility under it. The others, if there
be dealt with as the law
' provides.”
The table was a work
to a stiff, round nosegay, with a pa-
per lace frill stuck into a large tin
funnel, with lengths of silver gauze
ribbon extending to each cover, where
they were attached to the same kind
of bouquets, only much smaller, in ti-
ny tin funnels. Each of these bou-
quets had a “shower” of narrow silver
ribbons, with little knives,
spoons, ete., tied to the ends. These
were found at the five and ten cent
store, put up in sets on a card at the
toy table.

whose properties adjoin the right of
way of all railroads in Centre county
to permit the clearing of safety
strips, 100 feet wide, on both sides of

leading railroads have agreed to clear

sary permission can be procured from
abutting owners.

ber land owners would maintain, dur-
ing the fire season, spring and fall,
one forest fire patrolman upon each
5,000 acres. An agreement to that
effect was recently made between
owners of large tracts of timberland
and the Pennsylvania Department of
Forestry in a conference at Harris-
burg.
State Students to Cruise in Pacific
with Middies.
State College.—Six Penn State un-
dergraduates have answered a call
from the U. S. Naval Reserve for
practical service, and in a short time
will embark on a training ship with
midshipmen from Annapolis for a trip
in Pacific waters during the coming
studies here and have gone home to
prepare for the trip. One of them, J.

tall pudding mold, red crepe paper
and a fly swatter made another. The
second prize went to the baby’s bon-
net, made of a round wire strainer,
with two little strainers at the sides
for rosettes, and long strings of blue
ribbon fastened under them.
The first prize was a hatstand for
the closet shelf, and the second a very
pretty silver hatpin. When the hats
had been presented to the guest of
honor they adjourned to the living
room, where they played cards until
it was time to leave.
Another way of presenting the
things to the guest of honor would he
for the hostess to invite her to lunch
and not tell her that any one else was
coming. She could arrive first, and
when she had gotten into the living
room the rest of the guests could
come in, one after the other, wearing
the hats. The votes could be on the
most becoming ones, and when they
had been cast each one could go to the
honor guest and present her hat to
her. This could be done at a tea if
the one giving the shower didn’t feel
she could go to the expense of a lunch-
eon. :
Cheese is commonly regarded as an
appetizer and a seasoning for other
foods, but it is also a very satisfacto-
ry substitute for meat. It is rich in
protein and energy, and, contrary to
a prevailing impression, it is easily |
digested. Extensive digestion exper-
iments carried on by the Department
of Agriculture have demonstrated
that more than 95 per cent. of the pro-
tein of cheese is digestible and 90 per
cent. of its energy is available.

be a new dish on many tables. This
is also a Virginia dish and when serv-
ed with light corn bread forms a most |
toothsome combination.

Chocolate Fruit Cookies.—Cream
thoroughly together one half of a cup-
ful of butter and one cupful of sugar;
mix together two tablespoonfuls of
grated chocolate, one tablespoonful of
sugar and two tablespoonfuls of water
and cook for a moment or two over
the fire, until smooth, then add to the
butter and sugar. Add two well beat-
en eggs, one cupful of seeded and
chopped raisins, one pint of flour, in
which is mixed one teaspoonful of
baking powder; then add more flour,
until just stiff enough to roll out quite
thin. Bake in a moderate oven.
The slip-on corset of heavy elastic
webbing and quite devoid of boning is
a novelty of the moment.
