The forty-ninth anual convention of the Centre county Sabbath school association was held at Philipsburg on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, and was one of the best attend- ed held in the county in several years. Addresses of welcome were delivered by Rev. C. W. Wasson and L. W. Nut- tall, while F. M. Pletcher made the response. Among those who made interesting addresses at Tuesday’s sessions were Miss L. Grace Kane, an elementary state worker; Rev. W. H. Williams, and James R. Hughes. At Wednesday morning's session Miss Rose Russell, of Allegheny county, gave a highly instructive talk on graded lessons, and P. G. Or- wig spoke on the seven point chal- lenge. The report of C. C. Shuey, the association treasurer, having been audited and found correct, was ac- cepted. The secondary division older boys and girls conference conducted by Mr. Orwig proved very inspiring and help- ful to the young people. A special feature of the gathering was a ban- quet held on Tuesday evening which was largely attended. The conven- tion adjourned on Wednesday even- ing. Gehret went to Williamsport on Tuesday afternoon in the compa- ny’s big Pierce-Arrow car to get es- timates on rebuilding the same into a hose and chemical truck. The fig- ures obtained will likely be reported. to council at its regular meeting next Monday evening. CHAMBERLIN. — William B. Chamberlin, a life-long resident of Milton and a brother of Mrs. A. O. Furst, of Bellefonte, died at his home in Milton, at six o'clock Saturday morning following an illness of almost four months with heart trouble. He was a son of Moses and Jane Watson Chamberlin and was born at Milton on December 19th, 1841, hence was in his seventy-seventh year. His boyhood life was spent in that place. Later he attended The Pennsylvania State College where he graduated in 1862. - He served an enlistment dur- ing the Civil war as a member of Company E, 131st Penna. volunteers. From 1867 to 1887 he was a member of the firm of Chamberlin, Frick & Co., which operated a big sawmill and planing mill at Northumberland. He served as a member of Milton borough council and the board of education. Twenty-five years ago he became as- sociated with the Ried Tobacco com- pany of Milton and for a number of years had been a member of the board of directors and also a traveling salesman for the company. Mr. Chamberlin frequently visited Belle- fonte and was well known here. His wife, who before her marriage was Miss Margaret Sanderson Lawson, died in 1912, but surviving him are three sons, William L. Chamberlin, of Scranton; Harry W., an attorney of Milton, and James S., of Durham, N. |H. Burial was made at Milton Tues- day afternoon. ol Il HAZEL. Mrs. Jane Hazel, widow of the late Jared S. Hazel, died at 10:30 o’clock yesterday morning at the home of her son, Thomas S. Ha- zel, on east Logan street, as the re- sult of a stroke of paralysis sustained just about a week previous. Her maiden name was Jane Brown and she was born at Salona, Clinton county. Had she lived until next Au- gust she would have been sixty-nine years old. Practically all her married life was spent at Madisonburg but since the death of her husband almost eleven years ago she has made her home with her children, principally in Bellefonte. She was a life-long mem- ber of the Lutheran church and was a contrite, christian woman. Surviving her are four children, namely: Charles Hazel and Mrs. Nelson Hart, of Williamsport; Thom- as and George Hazel, of Bellefonte. Funeral services will be held at the Thomas Hazel home at 9 o’clock on Saturday morning by Rev. Wilson P. Ard, after which the remains will be taken to Madisonburg for Iniermens I] McCLINTOCK.—Mrs. Sen J. Mc- Clintock, widow of the late J. D. Mec- Clintock, of Lock Haven, died at the Lock Haven hospital on Saturday night of a complication of ailments following an attack of the grip. Her maiden name was Sarah Jane Durst and she was born at Centre Hall on January 26th, 1846, . hence was past seventy-two years of age. She was married to Mr. McClintock in 1867. He died some years ago but surviving her are the following children: Mrs. John Campbell, William D. and Earle, of Lock Haven; Mrs. Albert Curwin, of Flemington, and Roy, of Pittsburgh. She also leaves four brothers, Alfred and Samuel Durst, of Centre Hall; James, of Reedsville, and Andrew, of Joliet, Ill. The fun- eral was held-at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, burial being made in the Highland Sense Lock Haven. MARK. Shers. Ariat Heckman Mark, wife of Henry Mark, of near Penn Hall, died at the home of her son William, at Avis, on Sunday, as the result of a stroke of paralysis, aged 76 years. She had gone to her son’s home on a visit and was strick- en while there. Surviving her are her husband and six children, namely: Mrs. William Feidler, of State College; Mrs. Harry Weaver, of Middleburg; William, of Avis; Harvey, of Centre Hall; An- drew and Allen, at home, and Mrs. Agnew Limbert, of Wolf’s Store. The funeral was held on Wednesday after- noon, burial being made in the Heck- man cemetery. 1} i HAINES.—Mrs. Emma J. Haines, wife of George Haines, died at her home in Rebersburg on Sunday fol- lowing an illness of several months, aged 67 years, 10 months and 20 days. She is survived by her husband and three children, William B. and M. Claude, of Rebersburg, and Mrs. Or- vis C. Walker, of Altoona. She also leaves two brothers, Clark and Clay- ton Burket, both of Valley Falls, Kan. Rev. Shannon had charge of the fun- eral services which were held at ten o’clock yesterday morning, burial be- ing made in the Rebersburg cemetery. I il BLAIR.—Mrs. Sarah A. Blair, the widow of William P. Blair, and a for- mer resident of Centre county, died at her home at Lakemont Terrace, Altoona, on Monday afternoon of gen- eral infirmities, aged 85 years. Her surviving children are Miss Nancy Blair, of Pennsylvania Furnace; John, James and George, of Tyrone; Jacob and Lemuel, of Patton, and Mrs. Mar- tha Shope, of Lakemont Terrace. She also leaves forty-one grand-children and twenty great grand-children. Bur- ial was made on Wednesday in the Rose Hill cemetery, Altoona. One More Prisoner Escapes. William Hall made his escape from the penitentiary on Sunday evening. He was employed at the air compres- sor and got away when the guard wasn’t looking his way. Hall was sent up from Blair county for from one to three years for larceny. He is about 50 years old, 5 feet, 8 inches in height, weighs 189 pounds, has blue eyes, light chestnut hair and rather dark complexion. The Knights of Columbus, who are presenting the flag, have been for- tunate in securing for the occasion Mr. M. J. McEnery, past state dep- uty of ‘the K. of C. Mr. McEnery is a prominent lawyer of Philadelphia | and is noted for his eloquence. The people of Bellefonte have a treat in store in the address of this distin- guished orator. From the rooms of the K. of C. a short parade will precede the flag | raising. It will be made up of Our! Girls band, the G. A. R., the school ! children and the K.of C. As patriot- ism is a thing of no race, color or creed, all patriotic citizens of Belle- fonte are cordially invited to attend the flag raising and are offered this opportunity to show their apprecia- tion of the valor of forty-five boys who have offered themselves for the Supreme Sacrifice. xr A New Drive for Recruits for the Army. ! Another big drive for recruits has been inaugurated by the Williamsport recruiting station of the United States army. Men, 18 to 21, and from 32 to 41 are eligible for enlistment. Young men who were compelled to register | last Wednesday cannot enlist. The drive was started last week and will continue for an indefinite period. Young men, eligible, would be wise to avail themselves of the opportunity to enlist now. The army needs the men and must have them in order to prosecute the war to a successful ter- mination. For the purpose of aiding the young men in enlisting sub-stations have been established, so as to eliminate the long distance travéling to the main station at Williamsport. Sub-stations are located in the Y. M. C. A., Milton; Lockhart building, Sayre, and in the postoffice at Lock Haven. Sub-sta- tions could not be established in oth- er towns on account of the small force of recruiting officers on duty in the Williamsport district. Young men wishing to enlist can visit any of the sub-stations or go to the nearest postmaster. If they ap- ply to the sub-stations and are ac- transportation to the main station at Witliamsport. Postmasters are in- structed to take care of any appli- cants who may want to enlist and to communicate with the main officer by letter or telephone. Brandman’s Store Being Enlarged. Ray Brandman, proprietor of the workmen’s store on south Allegheny street, recently purchased the build-' ing occupied by Nathan Ichkowitz and this week has had a force of mechan- ics at work cutting a large archway between his other store room and his new purchase preparatory to branch- ing out as a regular department store. He expects to have everything in readiness for the opening tomorrow morning. On or about the first of July he will begin the improvements on his Lyric theatre, which will include a larger entrance and exit on Bishop street and the lowering of the floor so as to do away with the steps in front in or- der to comply with the law which will become effective in 1921. Young — Struble. — George E. Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew B. Young, and Miss Vera M. Struble, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Struble, both of Bellefonte, were mar- ried at the Methodist parsonage at two o’clock on Wednesday afternoon by the pastor, Dr. E. H. Yocum. They were attended by the bride’s sister, Mrs. Charles Saxion, and Ralph Ed- miston. The bridegroom is employed as a barber in Nighthart’s barber shop and being unable to leave at present the customary wedding trip was dispensed with. They expect to go to housekeeping at once in rooms over Twitmire’s store. Meyer—Rowland.—Jonathan Colyer Meyer, of Wayne, and Miss Margaret Rowland, youngest daughter of Con- gressman and Mrs. Charles H. Row- land, of Philipsburg, were married in St. Paul’s Episcopal church of Phil- ipsburg at four o’clock on Saturday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. F. T. Eastment. The wedding was one of the leading social events of the sea- son in Philipsburg and was largely at- tended. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer will re- side in Philadelphia where the bride- groom is located as the head of a pay- ing coal operation. Martin—Snook.—A quiet wedding was solemnized in the United Breth- ren parsonage at 9.30 a. m. Thursday of last week when Wilson R. Martin and Emma V. Snook were joined in holy wedlock by the pastor, Rev. T. Hugh MacLeod. ——The dental offices of the late Dr. H. W. Tate, located in the Bush Arcade, were opened on Wednesday for dental services by Dr. R. L. Ste- vens. Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Jenkins, of Tyrone, has given up his job with the General Electric company and enlist- ed for service in the Engineering De- pot detachment No. 437. He is now in a training camp just outside -of Washington, D. C. The training he is taking consists of searchlight inves- tigation for the purpose of determin- ing the best searchlights for various conditions. Most of them are used for picking up bombing planes in France. The investigations are car- ried on from morning until night every day in the week except Sunday. — Just think of it! Bellefonte is to have a carnival all of next week. It is a two car affair and will be lo- cated on the green out at the match factory. As to the character of the carnival we are unable to tell, but it will at least afford a diversion for one week. Murderer Gets Respite.
