Hoy Harter, the fourteen old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Harter, of Jacksonville, was shot under the left arm by his seventeen year old broth- er Victor, while out hunting rabbits on Tuesday morning and while at first his condition was considered crit- ical he is still living at this writing and his physician now has hopes of his recovery. The two brothers with George Diehl, of Sunbury, went out for rab- bits on the Clarence Yearick farm. They raised a rabbit in a gully and it ran right in the direction of Hoy Harter.” His brother Victor had a good shot at the rabbit and drew up his gun but seeing his brother in range did not intend to shoot, but in some way his gun was discharged, he avers, and the entire load of No. 6 shot struck his brother in the left side be- neath the shoulder. Help was at once summoned and a physician sent for who gave him all attention possible. Candy for the Soldiers’ Christmas. A fund is being raised by the W. C. T. U. to provide sweet chocolate and candy for Christmas for our soldiers in France and for those in the camps at home. Sometime ago John Price Jackson, Commissioner of Labor and Industry at Harrisburg, tendered his services to the United States government and shortly thereafter he was notified of his appointment as Major in the en- gineering service. On Monday even- ing he got orders to close up his bus- iness in three days and report to the War Department at Washington. Mr. Jackson will be there on time but does not know to what duty he will be as- signed. Word from Mr. and Mrs. John Fisher this week contained the infor- mation that while their son Harry, who fell from his aeroplane at Kansas and an arm broken, his condition is not critical and he will recover. Ins....P B Woodring 44....Burns Gates 47 | City, Mo., last week had several ribs | to think of him as being in robust { health. But the fact of the matter is | he had not been feeling well for sev- eral days. In fact had complained some the evening before. Wednes- day morning, however, he got up ear- ly, went to the postoffice and mailed a package and went to his’ office and | fixed the fire in his stove. He then returned to his home in Petrikin hall, and called his wife to do something for him as he had such a pain in the region of his heart. She hastily did what she could and then called Drs. Reed and Sebring, who responded promptly, and although they both did everything possible he died in a few minutes. Harry Wilson Tate was a son of Amos and Mary Jane McDowell Tate and was born June 21st, 1871, at Cur- ry Run, Clearfield county, making his age 46 years, 4 months and 17 days. his home locality he attended both the Lock Haven and West Chester Normal schools and then engaged in teaching two years. He then went to the University of Pennsylvania and took a course in dentistry. Follow- ing his graduation he practiced in Philadelphia three years, coming to Bellefonte in 1900 and opening an of- fice in the Bush Arcade. During his seventeen years’ practice here he es- tablished a large clientelle and had the best dentists in the central part of the State. He was a man of a most genial dis- position, kind-hearted and generous in the extreme. The morning of his death he had made an engagement to take a number of telephone operators out for a motor ride. He was a mem- ber of the Methodist church for many years and led a consistent, christian life. In 1902 he was united in marriage phia, who survives with no children. He leaves, however, his mother, liv- ing at Mahaffey, and the following brothers and sisters: Charles Tate, Clarence and Mrs. George McDivitt, of Curry Run;Miss Jennie Tate, at home; James, in Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Samuel Hidman, of Coatesville, and Mrs. Harry Mullen, of Clearfield. One brother and a sister preceded him to the grave. Funeral serviceg will be held at his late home at 2:30 o’clock this (F'ri- day) afternoon by Drs. E. H. Yocum and W. K. McKinney, after which burial will be made in the Union cemetery. il il BEHRER.—David Behrer, known resident of Halfmoon town- ship, died last Saturday morning fol- lowing an illness of a number of weeks. He was a son of Jacob and Mary Behrer and. was born at Wad- dle sixty-two’ years ago. He was a farmer by occupation and was a good citizen in every way. For a number of years past he had been a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, who prior to her marriage was Miss Eva Ward, and three children, Ira, Esther and David, all at home. He also leaves the following brothers and sis- ters: Charles, of Annville; Jacob, John and Mrs. Charles B. McCormick, of Pine Hall; Mrs. R. C. Palmer, of Linden Hall; Mrs. J. D. Wertz, of Houserville; Mrs. John Grove and Mrs. David Davis, of Lemont; Mrs. Sarah Ellsworth, of St. Louis, and Mrs. J. W. Hartsock, of Buffalo Run. Rev. H. F. Babcock had charge of the funeral services which were held at ten o’clock on Wednesday morning, burial being made in Gray’s cemetery. {l Il LEATHERS.—Claire Leathers, a well known young farmer of Howard township died at the Lock Haven hos- pital at five o’clock last Friday morn- ing, after an ilness of only ten days with stomach trouble. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Leathers and was born near Curtin twenty-three year ago. When he grew to man- hood he elected to follow farming and less than two years ago engaged in tilling the soil on a farm purchased for him by his mother not far from Howard. He was industrious and painstaking in his work and was prov- ing quite successful for ome of his | years. Several years ago he married Miss Hilda Wagner who survives with a little daughter, Eleanor. He also leaves his mother and several half- brothers and sisters. Funeral serv- ices were held at his late home at 2:30 o’clock on Sunday: afternoon. Rev. Gifford, of the Disciple church, was in charge and was assisted by Rev. Gross. Burial was made in the Curtin cemetery. | BUSH.—Mrys. Anna Bush, widow of the late Peter H. Bush, of Bush Hol- low, died last Saturday morning at the home of Grant Davidson, near Loveville, after an illness of some weeks with stomach trouble. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Spotts and was born in Bush Hollow on March 24th, 1840, hence at her death was in her seventy-eighth year. Surviving her are the follow- children: John Bush, of Glen Camp- bell; Mrs. Grant Davidson, Loveville; Mrs. William Gardner, Glen Camp- bell, and William, of Tyrone. Jones, ‘of Unionville, died at the Bellefonte hospital last Friday morning as the result of injuries sus- tained when she fell down the cellar steps at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Clark, at Waddle. She was a daughter of Jacob and Mary Dreese and was born in Snyder county on December 22nd, 1855, hence was in her sixty-second year. She had been a resident of Unionville about forty years. She is survived by her husband and the following children: William, of Mt. Union; Curtin, of Windber; Harry of Johns- town; Ira, of Mill Hall; Elmer, of Libby, Mon.; James and Levi, of Huntingdon; Mrs. M. L. Shank, of Reedsville; Mrs. John Clark, of Wad- dle, and Miss Ida, at home. Funeral services were held at the family home at Unionville at one o'clock on Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. A. Lepley, of Milesburg, after which the remains were brought to | Bellefonte for burial in the Union cemetery, six of the surviving sons acting as pall bearers. I HECKMAN.—Rev. Mattern, in Tyrone, after five day’s illness with pneumonia. He was in his seventy-sixth year and in his forty-one years in the active min- istry he had filled fifteen . appoint- ments among them three years on the Pennsvalley charge. His wife is dead but surviving him are three children, Mrs. Mattern, of Tyrone; Rev. Edgar R. Heckman, of Altoona, and Mrs. J. W. Hinebaugh, of Sunbury, with whom he had been making his home the past two years. The funeral was held yesterday morning, burial being made at Lewistown. I I | | DEWOODIE.—Mrs. Rosetta J. Dartt, widow of Dr. Dartt, at one time a | leading physician of Bellefonte, died {in a Philadelphia hospital on Wed- i nesday following an illness that ex- { tended over a period of eight years. | When she left Bellefonte she went to | Milesburg and spent two years then ‘went to Chambersburg where she kept ' a millinery establishment until strick- en with paralysis. Her maiden name ' was Brumbaugh and before her mar- riage to Dr. Dartt she resided in Phil- ipsburg. She is survived by two sons, Leland and James, the latter in the United States service. The remains will be: brought to Bellefonte this morning and taken direct to the Un- ion cemetery for burial. ll i WAITE.—Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Waite, of Halfmoon township, are | mourning the death of their young | daughter, Dorothea Waite, who pass- led away last Friday morning after a brief illness with appendicitis which developed into peritonitis. She was {aged 8 years, 6 months and 2 days and in addition to her parents is sur- vived hy three brothers and two sis- ters, namely: Ralph, Elizabeth, Da- rius, Ruth and Paul, all at home. Funeral services were held in the Friends meeting house at Halfmoon at 1:30 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, after which burial was made in the Friends cemetery. | BECHDEL.— Harry D; Bichdel, son of Roy S. and Nannie Wensel Bech- del, died at the family home in the Brown Row last Friday morning, fol- lowing an illness of some weeks with tuberculosis meningitis. He was born on April 24th, 1918, hence at his death was 4 years, 6 months and 8 days old. In addition to his parents he is sur- vived by several brothers and sisters. The funeral was held on Sunday after- noon, burial being made in the Union cemetery. Representative women from all over the county attended a meeting in the court house, Wednesday, call- ed there by R. H. Olmstead, county farm agent, that a committee might be formed to co-operate with him in his farm extension work. The com- mittee appointed was, Mrs. R. M. Beach, of Bellefonte, chairman; Miss Florence Rhone, of Centre Hall, vice- chairman, and Miss Josephine Muffly, of Howard, secretary. The work as arranged will include four lectures on the conservation of food and clothing, to be given within the next two months, at different points in the county. Mrs. Frank, Mrs. Musser and Mrs. Swarm, of Millheim; Mrs. Nannie Williams, of Unionville, and Mrs. Clemson and Mrs. Shultz, of Buf- falo Run, were among those present. >oo— Daniel I Johnson, of Pine Hall, fell down a fight of stairs on Wed- nesday and cut a gash on his head that required fifteen stitches to close. Imagining that the fall crops were not being properly taken care of John Kuhn, an aged Harris township far- mer, so worried over the matter that he committed suicide on Sunday: by hanging himself in the cow stable. Mr. Kuhn made his home with his son, Charles H. Kuhn and family, on the old homestead about two miles east of Boalsburg. He left the house about 10:15 o’clock Sunday morning and went out to the barn. Fifteen minutes later his grandson, Harry Kuhn, went into the cow stable and found his aged grandfather hanging from an overhead beam. Life was al- ready extinct. Mr. Kuhn was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kuhn and was born in Harris township on December 7th, 1832, hence was aged 84 years, 10 months and 27 days. His entire life was spent in the vicinity of his birth, where he was known as an honorable and respectable citizen. He was a lifelong member of the Reformed church. His wife, who prior to her marriage was Miss Levina Shuey, died thirty years ago, but surviving him are two children, Charles H. Kuhn, with whom he made his home, and Mrs. S. E. Weber, of Boalsburg. He also leaves two brothers, David, of Wisconsin, and William, of Centre Hall. Rev. S. C. Stover had charge of the funeral services which were held at ten o'clock on Wednesday morning, burial being made in the Boalsburg cemetery. ier OS “Texas Jack” Lacie Electrocuted. “Texas Jack” Lacie, a southern ne- gro who had the reputation of being a bad man generally, was electrocut- ed at the Rockview penitentiary on Monday morning. He was taken to the chair at 7:04 o’clock and pro- nounced dead at 7:11 by Dr. Robert J. Campbell. Lacie was a southern negro im- ported as a laborer to Cambria coun- ty. On February 18th, 1916, he and Luther Qualls quarreled over the af- fections of a young negro woman in a laborer’s camp at Elton and Lacie shot Qualls five times. Lacie was convicted at Ebensburg-on June 15th, 1916. Penn State’s Service Flag. A large service flag, bearing more than 500 stars, is being made at The . Pennsylvania State College in honor’ of the undergraduates and faculty members who have answered the call to arms. Each man who has left the institution for war service will be represented by a star and his name will be embroidered on it. Penn State's honor roll will be sim- ilar in design to the service flags now displayed at thousands of homes. When completed, the emblem, which is the largest in the country, will be unfurled acroos the front of the pipe organ in the Schwab auditorium. pe ?
