As nearly as can be-ascertained it

Ronaparte's soldiers introduced the
old-new style of leg wear which speed-
ily secured recognition as the distinc
tively masculine garment of civilians
throughout two continents.
In 1814—the year before Waterloo
—it was related as a current news
item of some importance that the

conclusion that the drum was no long-
er a necessary article of military
equipment, The report set forth that
the drum was a serious incumbrance
in marching; that rain impaired its
usefulness; that its calls could not be
distinguished in time of battle; that
it consumed a period of tw» years ‘0
