TO EMPLOY MANY ALIENISTS
New York, July 8.—Redoubled ef-
forts to build insanity proof were be-
gun by Harry Thaw's lawyers. After
seemingly abandoning this line of
campaign for upward of a week, coun-
gel for the murderer of Stanford White
have been driven back to it by recent
developments along the line of inde-
pendent investigation of the crime it-
self and the events which preceded it.
The lawyers for Thaw are begin
ning to learn much about the history
of their ciient’s career and of his past
relations with White and others, which
was not revealed to them when they
first took up his case. So much has
been learned by them of their client's
real character that they are seriously
contemplating a return to the original
plan of making a broad plea of insan-
ity, in which they expect to be sup-
ported by the testimony of the prison-
er's mother, who is now on her way
back from Europe. Apparently the
claim of justification under the “un-
written law” is not to be urged as an
excuse for Thaw's act, or, if urged at
all, it will be made a secondary con-
sideration to the insanity defense.
Dr. Allan McLane Hamilton, the
alienist, paid his second visit in less
than 24 hours to Thaw. This time he
remained in the young millionaire's
cell for an hour and a half. When he
came out Terrence J. McManus, one
of Thaw's lawyers, was with him.
“From what Dr. Hamilton has just
told me,” said Mr. McManus, “I am ab-
solutely satisfied with the result of his
examination of Mr. Thaw.” Further
than this, Mr. McManus refused to be
quoted. His remark was taken to mean
Dr. Hamilton would report that Thaw's
mind was undoubtedly affected.
After leaving Dr. Hamilton, Mr. Mc-
Manus said the defense is preparing
to retain a number of the most promi-
nent alienists from all over the coun-
try, and possibly from Europe, to act
in the case in conjunction with Dr.
Hamilton.
It has been positively ascertained
that Evelyn Nesbit did not order the
institution of a suit for breach of
promise against Harry K. Thaw, her
present husband, but that she did
swear to an affidavit in which she
charged Mr. Thaw with having point-
ed a pistol at her head and threatened
to shoot her if she did not immediately
swear to a charge accusing Stanford
White of accomplishing her ruin.
This affidavit has been destroyed,
but a photograph of the document is
fn existence, and its contents are of
such a nature as to preclude its publi
cation.

Five Years For Swallowing Diamond.
Omaha, Neb., July 7. — Mrs. May
Hayes, convicted of the theft from a
local jewelry store of a $300 diamond,
which she is alleged to have swallowed,
was sentenced to five years in the peni-
tentiary by Judge Sutton in the dis-
trict court. Mrs. Hayes was looking at
unset gems in the jewelry store and,
according to the testimony, when the
clerks’ back was turned she put a large
stone in her mouth, Two detectives
who had been shadowing her at once
arrested her, and she claims it was her
fright that made her swallow the dia-
mond. The gem has not been recov-
ered, although Mrs. Hayes offered to
submit to a surgical operation if the
prosecution was dropped. This the sta
would not agree to.
Saloonkeepers Admit Defeat.
Kansas City, July 10.—Brewers who
control saloons in Kansas City, Kan,
admitted defeat in their effort to keep
saloons open in deflance of law, and
announced that they will agree never
to sell lignor in Kansas City, Kan,
again, promising to give bond as a
guarantee of good faith.
547 Natal Rebels Killed.
Durban, Natal, July 9.—Natal troops
have completely surrounded and de-
feated a rebel body in the Umvoti dis-
trict. Five hundred and foryty-seven
rebels were killed and few escaped.
There were no white casualties.
A Sustaining Diet,
These are the enervating days, when, as
somebody bas said, men drop by the sun-
stroke as il the Day of Fire bad dawned.
They are franght with danger to people
whose systems are poorly sustained; and
this leads us to say, in the interest of the
less robust of our readers, that the fall ef-
fect of Hood's Sareaparilla is such as to sog-
gest the propriety of calling this medicine
something besides a blood purifier and
tonic, —say, a sustaining diet. It makes it
much easier to bear the heat, assures re-
freshing sleep, and will without any doubt
avers much sickness as this time of year.
