A dispatch from Odessa to the Daily Mail says that five infantrymen have been court-martialed and shot at Krementchug and seven at Poltava for having led mutin- rer, The phenomena of the figure seven and | its multiples, occurring in the new testa- . ment, have been touched upon by Ivan , Panin, a Russian student of the bible, who for a number of years has made his home at Grafton, Mass. This significance of the ‘'seven’’ will not be lost even upon the superstitions who are outside the pale of scriptural points, and, as Mr. Panin has shown them, their relations to their group- ings to the first 11 verses of the new testa- ment muss suggest that they were scarcely chance. For instance, in these first eleven verses of Matthew, the vocabulary consists of 49 words, or seven sevens; of these words there are 28, or four sevens, which begin with vowels, and 21, or three sevens, which begin with consonants. “This dietribution by sevens between vowel words and consonant words justly might have been deemed accidental, but for the fact that of the 49 words 42 of them are nouns—six sevens—and seven are not nouns.’ is the comment of the writer. ‘‘Of the 42 nouns there are 35 proper nouns, or five sevens, while seven are common nonns. Of the 35 proper names four sevens are male ancestors of Jesus and seven are not such. Not only then is the distribution of the 49 words of the vocabulary by sevens as between vowel words and consopant speech.” As a further and absolute proof that these phenomena of the sevens are not aoc- cidental, Mr. Panin points out that the 49 words of the vocabulary show 14 words that are not used but once. while 35 of them, or five sevens are not used more than once. His conclusion after an ex- haustive arrangement of the ‘‘seven’’ feat- ures are that ‘Not even the choice of the language in which the scriptures were written was made without marked numer- ical design at the threshold of the sub- ject.” Explosion Killa Ten. The Daily Mail's New Chwang corre- spondent, cabling under date of June 2nd, says : ‘‘General Stalkenberg, with 14,000 Russians, made up of artillery, cavalry and infantry, has marched south of Liao Yang in the direction of Washington. Large forces of Chinese bandits are collecting in the hills northeast of the Liao river and are preparing to cut the railway north of Muk- den.” The correspondent of the Daily Express at Nagasaki cables that transports loaded with troops continue to leave western Japa- nese ports daily for the theater of war. A large proportion of those dispatched during the past week, he says, were to reinforce General Oku. Alaska is a big country and has big possi- bilities says Field and Stream. It has the biggest bear, the biggest moose, the biggest mountain sheep and the biggest salmon and grayling in the world. All of these are plentiful and can be taken under Unit- ed States regulations. Time was when Alaska and Siberia were thought of by many as synonymous, and without an idea of just what was meant by either name. That has all changed in the last few years, and now Alaska is not so very far away from Seattle. Moreover, it has been found to be anything but an un- inbabitable country. It is without doubt the greatest game country on the globe to- day, because it is the newest, and the con- ditions are right for the maintenance of game animals and birds. The biggest mountain on the Northern American continent is in Alaska and is well named Mount McKinley. ——*‘Say, Willie, do all the choir boys turn into ministers when they grow up.’’ Excursion to Atlantic City.
