Fortune in Maine Skunks.
It will no doubt surprise many people to
learn that the despised skunk is worth
twice as much to Maine as is the much ad-
mired honey bee, but such is the fact’ and,
counting things at their actual worth, the
skunk is worth about as much as all the
deer killed in Maiue in a season. The skunk
is valuable both for hisfur and fer the oil
that is in him, and both the oil and the fur
are in ever increasing demand-
Fashion in furs regulates the price of
skunk skins. Four years ago the coat of
a dark skunk was worth from $2.50 to $3,
and the demand exceeded the supply.
Since then the muskrat has come into
favor, and the price of skunk skins bas
fallen to about $2 for the best. When.
however, there are a dozen fat skunks to
be had on every acre of meadow land,
when a hard wood club is the only weap-
on needed for killing them, and when
every fat skunk contains at least a quart
of oil worth $5 a gallon at wholesale, there
is money in the business.
Most of the skunk pelts are shipped to
a Philadelphia firm, where they are made
ap into furs for export to France and
Germany, in which countries they pass as
monkey skins. It is estimated that
Maine's revenue from skunks amounts to
$150,000 or $175,000 annually, which is
double the sum derived from all the honey
bees in the State and certainly more than
all the 8000 deer shot are worth to the men
who kill them. From 100,000 to 150,000
skunks are killed in Maine every fall.
The demand for oil is steadily incieas-
ing, and the price has advanced fifty cents
to $1 a gallon within a year. The natives
prize the oil for its virtues asa cure for
rheumatism and stiff joints, and large |
quantities of it are bought by country trad-
ers and sent to druggist out of the State,
It is estimated that the annual produe-
tion of skunk oil in Maine exceeds 25,000
gallons, and the quantity is increased by
adulteration with the fatty oils obtained
from hens and wood chucks, a deception
which has proved most profitable to the
skunk magnates — Philadelphia Record.
Immense Canteloupe Patch.
The largest canteloupe ‘‘patch’’ in the
world will be that which is to be planted
near Greeley, Colo.,the present spring. It
will embrace 2,000 acres. Hitherto can-
taloupe raising in Colorado has been most-
ly confined to the famous Rockyford dis-
trict, in the Arkansas valley, but the farm-
ers of northern Colorado have now deter-
mined to enter that very profitable field of

WASHINGTON, May 25.—A bulletin is-
sued by the Census Bureau gives the total
number of employees in the executive civil
service of the United States as 150,383.
The figures include only those employees

431 are engaged in clerical work; 46,162

39,218 hetween 20 and 30, and 30,394 be-
tween 40 and 50. One hundred and one

More than a third of the number have been
employed for less than five years and more
than a fifth for less than a year. Only 328

years. Those who receive salaries of $2500
or more number 851, less than $720,50,005.

J. D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, W.
K. Vanderbilt and Charles M. Schwab are
about the only millionaires in New York
who can support the luxury of yards around

pains in the upper part of my spine ac-

my head and acute lameness right over

many cures that had been made in Belle-
