Bellefonte Pa.. May 13, 1904. SE ———————— Treasury Surplus Disappearing. WASHINGTON, D. C., May 6.—The treasury surplus which was $54,000,000 at the beginning of this fiscal year, disap- pear today, and from now until the end of the fiscal year a deficit will be growing in its place. The total expenditures of the government since July 1st of last year have been $460,598.98 and the total receipts up to this morning have been $459,981,341.16, leaving a deficit this morning of $132,- 258.82. A year ago last December the Secretary of the Treasury calounlated, that there would be a surplus of about $14,000,000 by the end of next month. When. making that estimate, however, he had no knowledge that Congress would make a loan of about $5,000,000 to the St. Louis exposition, $3,000,000 of which has already been paid out. Nor could he tell that the Panama canal payments would occur at this time. The receipts from customs have fallen off this year by $21,000,000, while those from internal revenue have increased only $3,- 000,000, and from miscellaneous sources the increase has been about $4,000,000. ——*‘So there was a melodrama in town last week,’’ said the hat drammer. ‘‘Was it realistic ?’’ “‘Gosh, yes,’ replied the Kansas post- master. ‘‘Why, they had a cyclone so natural that everyone ran out and jumped in the cyclone cellars.’’—Chicago Journal. A StarTLING TEST.—To save a life, Dr. | T, G. Merritt, of Mehoopany, Pa., made a startling test resulting in a wonderful care. He writes, ‘‘a patient was attacked with violent hemorrhages, caused by ulceration of the stomach. I had often found Electric Bitters excellent for acute stomach and liv- er troubles so I prescribed them. The pa- tient gained from the fisrt and has not bad an attack in 14 months.”” Electric Bitters are positively guaranteed for Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Constipation and Kidney trou- bles. Try them.
