Democrats Wada, Bellefonte, Pa., May 8, 1903 ’ GOSPEL OF THE FIELDS, Have you ever thought, my friend, As daily you toil and plod In the noisy paths of man, How still are the ways of God Have you ever paused in the din Of traffic’s insistent ery To think of the calm in the cloud, Of the peace in your glimpse of the sky ? Go out in the growing fields, That quietly yield your meat, And let them rebuke your noise, Whose patience is still and sweet. They toil their aeons; and we, Who flutter back to their breast, A handful of clamorous clay, Forget their silence is best. —Arthur Upson Nine Killed by Explosion ! Shock was Felt for Miles. Three Distinct Ex- plosions Occurred a Few Minutes After 7 O'clock Thursday Morning. And it is not Like- ly that the Real Cause of the Explosion will Ever Be Known Because Death Removed Witnesses. Shock was Heard tor Miles. An awtul calamity befel the vicinity of Williamsburg last Thursday shortly after 7 o'clock. The plant of the Crescent Pow- der company, located at what is known as Wertz's station, two miles from Williams- burg and a mile from Franklin Forge, was practically wiped out by three ex- plosions, one following quickly on the other. Nine persons were killed outright and a number injured. The debris caught fire and added to the horror of the dis- aster. : ! The reports ‘were deafening and were heard for miles around. As far as Ms. Etna the shock was felt, while in the vi- cinity window glass was broken in houses. The Children’s Home, across the river from Williamsburg, sustained numerous cracks in the ceilings and doors were sprung out of plumb and refused to close. The Crescent Powder company supplied the powder and dynamite used in the large limestone quarries of the United States Steel corporation, in Blair county. and is owned by Pittsburg capitalists. There were eleven buildings in the plant, of which number five are still standing. The estimated value of the plant was $35,000. George B. McCabe, of Pittsburg is the president of the powder company and George Troutman, of the same city, is the treasurer. Adam Taggart, of Pittsburg, is the su- perintendent of the company and was found in the ruins of his office by his wife, who, with the aid of others, rescued him from his perilous position. The building had caught fire and he was unconscious. His injuries are the most serious of all the per- sons hurt. The powder factory is located in a remote portion of the county, and authentic de- tails are unobtainable at present. Near the factory are the lime stone quarries of the American Wire and Nail company, where 500 men are employed. These quarries were deserted by the fleeing men, and all who live in the neighborhood hurried to places of safety. In the magazines and store houses of the factory were 1,400 blocks of explosives, and it was feared the greatest explosions would come afterward. The Piney Creek branch of the Pennsylvania railroad runs past the fac- tory, and because of the danger the rail- road company refused to allow any trains to pass over this branch. Fourteen men and sixteen women were employed in the factory which was destroy- ed. Most of them were brought from Pitts- burg. They are regarded as experts in the manufacture of powder. The women man- aged to escape from the building before the explosion came that hurled their fel- low workmen into eternity. All were cut and badly burned. The force of the ex- plosion was so great that it wrecked all the buildings in the vicinity, and broke windows in towns five miles away. A rescuing party has gone from Williams- burg to the scene of death and destruction. The cause of the explosion is a mystery. The eight men killed were blown to pieces. The remains bave been brought to Wil- liamsburg. Superintendent Taggart was the only man in the factory who escaped alive. The buildings caught fire imme- diately after the explosion. Because of the immense quantity of dyna- mite stored in the plant. the rescuing party dared not approach the fire, and another ex- plosion was feared. A house owned by William Treese, lo- cated near the factory, was wrecked bya second explosion, which occurred about an hour after the factory was blown up. The Treese family barely escaped with their lives. Prayers at $3 Each, Swallow. Cheap, Says In the approval of the bill increasiug the salaries of the chaplains of the Senate and House from $3 to $6 a day, Rev. Dr. Silas C. Swallow finds an occasion to indulge in sarcastic comment : ; *‘It was a tough job these chaplains had”? he said, ‘‘to pray in the atmosphere creat- ed by Ripper bills, ‘franchise grabs,’ press | wmuzzlers’ and the like and inasmuch as the State seems to have money to burn,’ judg- ing from the new positions created and the increased salaries given to so many state employees, why should not the poor fellows who do the praying have a fair share of the boodle? Doubtless $6 for a three minute prayer will double the supply of applicants as compared with $3 a prayer and the fight for these positions will grow more bitter as the next session approaches.’’ The doctor furthermore thinks that at $3 each the prayers should be longer and loud | er than at $3. In his opinion it is much more dignified to offer outright $6 a prayer than to auction them off to the lowest bid- 4ler, as is done with some other commodi- ties used at the capitol.
