AGRICULTURE (Two Courses), and AGRI- | Wayne free schools, and we now part with ! you, the girls and boys we are no more to i teach. | 1 say girls and boys, tor when three score and ten years have come to you you will be glad to have your friends say that health and peace of mind have kept your hearts warm; that you wear no brow of gloom, are not borne down with age, but still in heart are ‘girls and boys.” When these years come, and. I hope they will come to all, the tide of time will roll back and tell you of your school time days, when the fair, the kind and the true found love, but the false heart found no friend, no tongues to praise. These days bring rich gifts to age, and when you shall cease to think of them your fire has burned low and your light has gone out. You have been here taught in the hope that the free schools of Fort Waye would help to make you of use to your friends and to the world, would give you faith in all that is good and true and lead you to seek work, for that you must seek avd do it if you would have a good name, wealth,a home, a charge to keep or a trust to serve. Go forth with a hota; true heart to seek the work for you to do. “Keep in mind that the hours to work run through each day, and that God’s ; great law of life is, ‘In the sweat of thy | face shalt thou eat bread.’ “Now, for you, young man, this truth is told. ‘Go where you will through the world, { and you will find on the front door of shops i and mills, of stores and banks, and on ships, on farms, on roads, in deep mines where | men toil for wealth; where laws are made that make some men too rich and men of worth and work through all our land too poor; where men by law are taught to plot with sin, to spurn the right, that charge and cost and spoil may make old ‘Quirk’s law firms rich; where law is to plead that the judge must guess to find what's law; where quacks must fight o’er sick men’s pains and dead men’s bones; where types are set and none to mind the proofs; where priests do preach and pray and where schools are taught; this sign : ‘Brains Will Find Work Here.’ “Don’t fear. Step up and ask for work. Brains will get it. Don’t let ‘I dare not wait on I would’—Ilike the cat that loves fish, but dare not wet her foot. “If it be said, ‘What can you do? Will you learn a trade ? say, ‘I have none, but I can learn one and put brains in it.” When you go to a place where brains should hunt for work and be sure to find it, it may be | | ! horn and Heinz, and is a preparation of methylic ether. It occurs in white ecrys- tals, which dissolve in water. A few drops diluted with twenty parts of water when put into the eye make the ball in- sensible in ten minutes, and permit of any operation without pain. Intradermic or sub-mucuous injections are, however, the most practical applications of it. Luschen- burger regards cocaine as better than it for the eye or nose, but gives it the preference for ail other local anaesthesias, owing to feeble toxicity. It is, in fact, only about half as toxic as cocaine. Witha solution of 1 per cent. the insensibility lasts a quarter of an hour, and with one of 2 per cent. for 25 minutes over an area of about a square inch. Professor Boncour, of the Dental School, Paris, uses it for extracting teeth. A youthful member of a prosperous fam- ily about Kilmarnock sat down at the breakfast table one morning lately with an unwonted expression on his face re- lates the Scotish American. He lin- gered over the meal, sometime with a long visage which afterward would relax into the semhlance of a smile. At length he broke silence, addressing his father: “Do you ken I had a gey guid dream last night. I thocht I was deid an’ was gaun to heaven, but to win there I had to clim’ a lang ladder, and as I was up, step by step, I had to mark my sins on every ring wi’ a bit caulk. On the road up I met somebody comin’ doon, and here it was uncle Sanny. ‘Hallo! uncle,’ says I, ‘you're gaun the wrang road.” ‘Ay,’ says he, ‘I had to turn back for mair caulk.’ An' wi’ that I wauken’t.”’ A HORRIBLE OUTBREAK.—‘‘Of large sores on my little daughter’s head devel- oped into a case ofjscaldhead’’ writes :C.D. By the prompt measures of General MacArthur and the re-enforcing of the city garrison the trouble has been averted. The feeling in Manila is, however, shown by the fact that some prominent Ameri- cams tried to organize a little demonstra- tion of friendly natives to welcome the Commission, but could not get a dozen to consent, and gave up the project. Tremendous heat has prevailed for the last two weeks. It has made operations in the field almost impossible and has greatly increased the sick list. PHILADELPHIANS AGAINST FILIPINOS. The American League, No. 722 Broad street, Philadelphia, had a petition pre- sented in the Senate to-day by Mr. Hoar requesting legislation that will assure the people of the Philippines that it is the purpose of the United States to enforce them to be subjects or citizens of the United States. PHILIPPINE RECRUITS COME SLOWLY. Recruiting for the army in the hilippines still goes on, but it is slow business. About 1600 men are needed each month to fill vacancies caused by death, illness and discharges but the Bos- ton office is now supplying only 50 a month. The recruiting officer believes the letters written home by New England men now serving in the Philippines are responsible for the marked falling off in the enlists ments. In March there only 1390 enlist- ments in the entire country. Baby Boy Inherits $12,000,000. John Nicholas Brown, 11 weeks old, is the richest baby in the world. By the wills of his father, John Nicholas Brown, just filed at Newport, R. I., he is ‘made principal heir to the two estates valued at $6,000,000 each. By the terms of inheritance the child ‘is not to receive his fortune until his twenty- fifth year. Meanwhile it will accumulate in the hands of the trustees. John Nicholas Brown died in New York on May 1st, and his brother Harold, who came hurriedly from Europe, died the day after his arrival. ——“Mrs. Skinner has had to give up all the five clubs she belongs to.’ ‘‘Has she nervous prostration ?’’ ‘No; but every time she went out of the house her husband moved all the furniture around.’ AASB BTL AY LIVER CHILLED PLOW AT OLD PRICES.
