A Cure That Killed.
Mrs. Meger Starved to Death in Getting Rid of
Rheumatism,
An investigation into the death recently
of Mrs. Hermina Meyer, 50 years of age, of
Philadelphia, has resulted in eliciting the
information that she was a victim of star-
vation in consequence of her belief in the
fasting treatment for disease.
C. F. Meyer, her husband, accepts the
death of his wife as due to heart failure.
He said that Mrs. Meyer had been suffer-
ing with chronic rheumatism for a year,
and that the family physician’s efforts to
relieve her had been without avail. In
despair, she turned to the fasting treat-
ment.
She consulted Henry Ritter, said to be
the chief advocate and adviser of the fast-
ing cult in Philadelphia. He is a demon-
strator in the Drexel institute. Under his
direction Mrs. Meyers is said to have ab-
stained absolutely from food for 35 days.
Nothing was allowed to pass her lips but a
small quantity of tonicum and some physi-
cological salt dissolved in water. Of each
of these she was permitted to take sparing-
ly every day as a stimulant.
For 25 days, Mr. Meyer says, his wife
showed signs of improvement. Then she
was seized with convulsive vomiting. She
suffered in this manner for 16 days, and on
the thirty-fifth day she tasted food. From
150 pounds she was reduced to a mere
skeleton, and three weeks following the
breaking of the fast she died. Ritter says
he was unaware that Mrs. Meyer's heart
was weak and that he had apparently cur-
ed her of rheumatism when heart failure
killed her.
The Dead Sea.
Some long current illusions concerning
the Dead sea are dispelled by Henry
Dexter, of the American News company,
who went to see its reputed wonders with
his own eyes. In his opinion the bed of
tke sea is of volcanic formation. *‘I took
a plunge in the water to test its qualities.
The water is, I should say, a bituminous
salt brine. I was careful not to get the
water in my eyes or on my hair. I had
been told that nothing could sink in the
Dead Sea, but I found that was untrue, for
the reason that if I had not made an effort
to keep on top I would have gone down.
The water is of a character that if one had
a cutaneous disease it would make the
flesh smart fiercely. It was exceptionally
refreshing, however, on account of the
heat. The water was wonderfully clear,
and you could see down to a depth of
twenty feet. The water was perhaps a
little more buoyant than ordinary salt
water, bat it wonld not hold me up. It
was not sticky, but washed off as freely as
any salt water. One thing I noticed, and
of which I have never been able to get an
explanation, was a small island 500 feet
from shore. This bad on it large square
blocks of stone. I have never been able to
.ascertain where these blocks came from.
The theory that birds cannot fly over the
water is untrue, as I saw lots of birds fly-
ing over it.”’— Collier's Weekly.
Woman's Inconsistency
“It almost kills me to stand” moaned
the lady in the streetcar. “If I don’t get
a seat pretty soon I shall just drop.” And
it was only the next day that she stood up
two hours and a half while she had a dress
fitted. But then that’s a different thing.

circumstances and yet they made no effort
to help the bereaved husband whose best
friend had ceased to lived. He was com-
pelled by adversity and the indifference of
his neighbors to dig his wife’s grave and
bury her.
Burly Tramp.—‘Wot’s th’ good of
a little dog like this ?”?
Mrs. Rural—‘‘To keep off tramps.”
“He! ne! Wot kin that little critter
do?”
‘‘He can bark, that will wake up the big
dogs under the porch.”’
“Y-e-s, mum. Good day, mum.”

Hew MUCH YOU EAT
Is not the question, but, how much you
digest, because food does good only when
it is digested and assimilated, taken up
by the blood and made into muscle, nerve,
bone and tissue. Hood's Sarsaparilla re-
stores to the stomach its powers of diges-
tion. Then appetite is natural and
healthy. Then dyspepsia is gone, and
strength, elasticity and endurance return.
Dyspepsia—“My husband had dyspepsia
and an attack of lumbago. He could not eat
anything. He began taking Hood's Sarsapa-
rilla which agreed with his stomach and he be-
gan to get better very quickly. The lumbago
left him and now his stomach is so mueh better
he feels like his old self.” Mrs. C. H. STAGE,
656 N. 43d Street, Philadelphia, Pa.
Stomach trouble—‘My stomach troubled
me and I would be dizzy. When I had taken
four bottles of Hood's Sarsaparilla I was entire-
ly well.” Mrs. W. A. Sranro, 406 Fourth Av,
