——All honest toil is honorable. But is? —Arrangements have been made to run a the making of a livelihood, a competence or a fortune, the consummation of life's purpose ? Alas for a man whose soul is imprisoned in secular life ! Alas for the lawyer who never gets above his briefs, the physician who knows no more than *‘laudamy and calamy,”’ the carpenter who is satisfied with the shoving of his saw and plane, the housewife whose soul is ab- sorbed in her needlework! We are made in God’s likeness. Shall the eagle be tethered to a stake ? Shall a lion be har- nessed to a cart ! Up with your heart, O sons of the living God ! Make your secular business as honorable as you please ; yet your life will be a failure if it exhausts it- self upon that. Roland. —DMiss Elizabeth Neff is visiting at Eagle- ville. —Mrs. Williams is at Port Matilda visiting her mother, Mrs. Stevens, who is seriously ill. —Alfred L. Gates shot a big, fat minx lately much to the satisfaction of the poultry raisers of this section. —Under the direction of superintendent Bion Williams an interesting program is be- ing prepared for children’s day in the Mcth- odist church. —Jack Leathers, son of Joseph Leathers, of near this place, was recently assaulted by a tramp, who compelled him to take off his clothes 2nd hand them over. The boy was kept from giving an alarm by the tramp pointing a revolver at him. Spring Mills. —Our farmers are busy at present. —The Spring Mills planing mill is in full operation with plenty of business. —Harry Frankenberger, formerly our as- sistant postmaster, has become very popular on the hill as chief manager in the large es- tablishment of C. P. Long—‘‘his name is great in the mouths of wisest censure.” —On Tuesday morning the passenger train, due here at 8 o’clock, run over a valuable cow belonging to Mrs. Kenneley, a venerable lady of our village, of course the company will pay the damages. —White washing fences seems to be the general amusement at present. The fence at the Presbyterian church received a coat of white wash last week and was done in such an excellent manner that paint would be no improvement. The ‘‘artist’” evidently un- derstood her business. —The Spring Mills cemetery has been greatly improved, all the weeds and briars have been removed from the walks and graves; the tottering tombstones replaced and the fence surrounding the cemetery thorough- ly repaired and white washed. It now pre- sents a neat appearance. —The war news has excited our village like other localities. Flags and bunting are displayed everywhere. Allison Bros.’ large roller mill, the stores and many resi- dences are decorated with the national colors, and the Spring Mills band nightly plays national airs. —What has become of the candidates, have they all struck sugar, or what is the trouble? Very few, if any, have been in the neighbor- hood lately. Probabably they are detained in certain weak localities repairing and ‘“‘white washing’’ their political fences, and their absence from here is simply the calm which precedes the storm. special train to Bellefonte this evening, on account of the ‘“‘Deestrict Skule,” if enough tickets can be sold here and at the State Col- lege to justify it. Theround trip tickets and the admission to the opera house will be but fifty cents. —Rev. Asbury Guyer will preach the memorial sermon to Captain Campbell Post, G. A. R. on Sunday, the 29th, at 2 o’clock, in the M. E. church. Rev. Black will assist at the services. On thc 30th the hour tor the decoration services, at this place will be at 1.30 o’clock. At Pine Hall the graves will be decorated at 5.30. Prominent speakers will be present and the various Sunday schools, I. 0. O. F. and the Jr. O. U. A. M. have been invited to participate. —Our town has gotten the patriotic fever in a bunting form. Flags of every size and stripe wave from the houses and with a great fifeen footer floating in the diamond we can afford to be proud. Last Saturday evening at 7 o'clock the event was ceiebrated with ap- propriate ceremonies. The Pine Grove band furnished the music, patriotic songs were sung and Prof. S. C. Miller dedicated the flag with oratory. It was his first at- tempt and his reception was most hearty. John Sausserman deserves all the credit for raising the cash for the flag as well as the pole. Three rousing cheers for the stars and stripes were given and every one went home hoping that the war would soon end and that the candidates would be given as how. Announcement.
