Oo THE FIFTIETH ANNUAL SESSION OF THE COUNTY TEACHER'S INSTITUTE. The public school teachers of Centre county are nothing if not interesting. Their | annual migration te Bellefonte, to put in a week, playing scholars to other dénstruc- tors, has come to .be one of the looked for events of the holiday season. Bright and early Monday morning they began to arrive. The trains brought in hundreds of well dressed young men and young women, whose eagerness to learn be- "came manifest the moment they landed. That is, it might have appeared that way to any one who didn’t understand why they went scampering up street as fast as their dignity would permit. It wasn’t the longing to get into the intellectual atmos- phere that Supt. Gramley and a few of his early arrived helpers had been dispelling about the court house, oh no! It was the scramble for first pick of the rooms at the hotels up town. It was not long until they were all com- fortably housed and had found their way to the court house, where the work of enroll- ment was going on. Of the 276 teachers in the county 249 responded to the morn- ing roll call and by evening all had ar- rived but four. Superintendent C. L. Gramley occupied the chair. The address of welcome was delivered by J. C. Meyer, Esq. He made a splendid address which was well received and extended a cordial and hearty welcome on the part of the citizens of Bellefonte to the teachers of Centre county. Responses were made by Dr. D. M. Wolf, of Spring Mills, and Prof. W. A. Krise, of State College. A bright, witty address was made by Dr. M. G. Brumbaugh, professor of pedagogy in the University of Pennsylvania... He was followed by Prof. Chas. H. Albert, of the state Normal school, Bloomsburg, Pa. At twelve o'clock Prof. Gramley adjourned the institute until 1.30 p. m. After this address Prof. Brumbagh, again addressed the institute having for his theme ‘‘The duty of the teachers to teach the mother tongue with the greatest ease.’’ MONDAY EVENING. In place of Dr. Atherton, Dr. Benediot, of State College, delivered a very sugges- tive lecture en habit. Dr. Benediot quoted Prof. James, L. L. D., of Harvard Univer- sity the greatest phychological genius in the English language, to the effect that to define habits is to discuss the fundamental qualities of matter. Habit is of great moral serviceaccording to James and is ‘‘the fly wheel of society.” - The audience was favored by two instru- mental duets rendered by Miss Bessie Dor- worth and Miss Lizzie Crouch. After singing, Hon. Willis R. Bierly, made an address on some fundamental prin- ciples of education. : The session opened after dinner with singing after which Hon. W. R. Bierly, of Williamsport, a native of this county, was TUESDAY AT INSTITUTE. After singing and prayer Prof. Bible gave a very interesting talk on reading in schools. He was then followed by Prof. Brumbaugh having for his subject a phase of language teaching, 1. What ought the child to read. 0 ‘ 3 ‘6 teacher [1 Three features of a good book : (a) must be interesting ; (b) must lead the reader to think ; (¢) must make the life of the read- er better. Defined reading as thinking and illustra- ted it by citing various passages of the best English poems by requesting the audience to close their eyes so as to more easily bring home the thought by excluding sense impressions. The Professor’s lecture was exceedingly interesting and will prove most beneficial in teaching icading among our teachers. He was followed by Prof. Albert, of the Bloomsburg state Normal school, who talked on ‘Education an Unfolding Pro- cess.” E. L. Latshaw, of Howard, gen- eralized on school questions, and Prof. George P. Bible, principal of the Strouds- burg state Normal school, gave several very entertaining recitations. In the evening Dr. Brumbaugh made lasting the already favorable impression he had made on the teachers. His theme “‘the Teche Country’’ dealt with Louis- iana characteristics and was exceptionally entertaining. WEDNESDAY’S PROGRAM. At the Wednesday’s sessions Prof. Al- bert talked on geography, Dr. Brumbaugh continued his entertaining instruction on pedagogy and Supt. James M. Coughlin, of Scranton public schools, talked on history. Supt. T. L. Gibson, of Ebensburg, talked on music. In theevening Judge Alfred Allison, of Indiana, lectured on ‘‘Kings and Queens, or Earth's True Royalty." \ THURSDAY'S SESSIONS. ’ During the two sessions to-day (Thurs- day) all of the instructors will continue their talks on the subjects taken up on Wednesday, except Dr. Brumbaugh, who has left. and will be very much missed. Prof. A.Riest Rutt, of the Bellefonte High school, will read a paper on history at the session to-day and Institute will likely adjourn about 4:30 o’clock this afternoon. To-night (Thursday) the Boston Ideal banjo and guitar clubs will entertain in the court house. THE DIRECTOR'S MEETING. The director's meeting will be held in the High school building at 10 o'clock Thurs- day morning. They are to be addressed by Prof. Albert, and Prof. Coughlin. A number of the directers will read papers on school management. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon they will meet to finish up their work and, with the teachers, they will all try to get home to-night so as to hang up their stockings for Santa Claus. There are seven of them all in the same room, but we couldn’$ see, from the top of the first National bank, whether they are all in one bed or not. * * * Miss Sadie Miller, one of the most charm- ing of the younger teachers who are at- tending institute, is making the home of W. T. Speer, on west High street, her | stopping place. She is a daughter of J. H. Miller, of Rock Spring. * * J. L. Holmes and N. N. Hartswick, two College township teachers, are at Garmans. The latter will be re membered as a mem- ber of the crack Bellefonte base ball club, while Mr. Holmes, once ran for Recorder on the Republican ticket. * . +* 8. C. Miller, A. J. Tate and M. E. Heb- erling, three of the young men who claim Pine Grove as their home, are having piles of fun between sessions, escorting the girls about town. * * * of Snow Shoe, who from this A. C. Thompson, might be a Representative Ex-deputy prothonotary David R. Fore- man is registered at the Brant house as be- ing from the ‘‘Loop”’ * % 0. W. Hunter, of Fillmore, is at the Brant and with Wagner Geiss, of Centre Hall, has been doing his best to teach land lord Yeager’s parrot Latin. ot * * Among the teachers who are making things lively up at Keller's hotel, where everyone has a good time, are J. E. Mc- Williams, of Fairbrook ; A. L. Duck, of Spring Mills ; H. C. Rothrock, of Boals- burg, once a candidate for county superin- tendent ; A. G. Robb, of Nittany, and W. F. Leathers, of Mt. Eagle. * * * D. M. Tate, of Lemont, spends his idle moments at the Brant. * * * T. A. Auman, who teaches at Wood- ward and is just getting over a siege of the mumps which had closed his school, is ab the home of Charles Bell, on Thomas street. LL * * Miss Anna Heberling, of Blanchard, a daughter of J. H. Heberling Esq., is in attendance again this year. She teaches in Liberty township and besides being con- sidered one of the best young teachers in the county is decidedly a smart looking young woman. * * Mr. H. A. Detwiler, of Rebersburg, is quite as popular about the court house as in the 'vicinity he teaches and is so well liked. He is an ambitious young man and holding a permanent certificate he is not bothered with further examinations. Mr. Detwiler dabbles in politics a little too. He was president of the Rebersburg free gilver club and from the way he is booked on the currency question we imagine he made a good one. * = * H. Elmer Bierly, a graduate of Prince- ton and a post graduate of Harvard, is fill- ing out a term as teacher at Hublersburg. He is attending institute and has aided the WATCHMAN very matetially in gathering together, the statistical report it presents to day. Mr. Bierly is one of Rebersburg’s clean cut young men. * & % G. H. Hubbard, one of Lycoming coun- ty’s best teachers, has been here in atten- dance at institute. He has taught at Snow Shoe and Fleming, in this county, and finds it pleasurable and profitable pastime visiting our teachers collectively. ° A Descendant. Elderly Gept—I am 80 years old, young : man, and I don’t recollect ever telling a lie.”’ The Young Man—Are you a relative of George Washington ? A Parting Shot. R. of Pa., will sell low rate local excursion tickets from and to all points on its line, good going Dec. 24th and 25th, also Dec. 31st and Jan. Ist. These tickets will be honored for return passage on or before Jan. 4th, 1897. ANOTHER SWINDLER WORKS BELLE- FONTE MERCHANT§—It was only last swindle which Burt Dymond and George Summers, traveling sharpers, had worked on Bellefonte merchants in the shape of advertising in a menu holder that was to be left in the restaurants in the town. They stuck a few business men for an amount between $40 and $50. While they were yet duping their vic- tims J. C. Gray, of Philadelphia, arrived at Keller's hotel and began soliciting ad- vertisements for boards that he contracted to place in all stations along the line of the C. R. R. of Pa. J. I. McClure, Frank Galbraith, C. R. R. of Pa., Archibald Allison, Dr. A. W. Hafer, James Harris & Co.. L. C. Wetzel, Robert Cole, S. H. Diehl, Geo. Bush and W. R. Brachbill, all took space. The Gazette office printed the advertising cards and last Monday Gray secured them, paying only part of his bill, and made up a sample board. With this from Diehl and $3 from Brachbill. He left town that night without having put up a single board and sticking landlord Keller for a week’s boarding, as well as the $1.50 he had borrowed from him. The swindler left nothing behind him but an empty satchel. ——— be Bellefonte Tots Write Letters te Santa . Claus.
