— At last they have seen. Hand
in hand the farmer and workingman
walked in the light and voted with the
party which has worked for them.
— Thousands of sober minded Re-
publicans, who had the courage to re-
buke the nefarious methods of their
party leaders, are rejoicing with us to-
day.
Why Democrats Can Rsjoice.
To use the language of nearly every
prominent Republican who figured in
the work which found its consumma-
tion on Tuesday. It was indeed “a
campaign of education.” The brass
band, torch light, pyrotechnic, mud
flinging fore-runners of past elections
were not heard of in the season of care-
ful consideration and debate which
has just given the country into
the hands of Democracy. Every
where the cry of ‘we are the party
of superior intelligence” rang out
from the platform of Republican mass
meetings, but the boasted “intelligence”
proved the boomerang for their own
destruction. It was intelligence that
enabled the laborer, the farmer, the
mechanic, the small manufacturer—in
truth the masses—to sift out the ker-
nels of Democratic principles and lay
them over against the gall of unkept
Republican promises.
Mouey, in sums almost fabulous
was carried into New York and other
doubtful States with the hope of stop-
ping the great tide which was washing
away the rotten piers of Republican-
ism. Notwithstanding it the voice of
American manhood denounced, in thun-
derous toues, the attempts of a party to
fasten such iniquitous measures as the
McKinLey and Force bills on a free
people.
We have reason to rejoice be-
cause of the heart and soul fealty of
New York Democrats to the cause of
Democracy. Personal aspirations
were lost eight of in the supreme effort
for victory. Organizations heretofore
antagonistic were one in a common
cause. Fveryplace in which the issues
were discussed the same joyful news of
victory is hesrd.
To every citizen of the United
States who voted for CLEVELAND and
StevENsoN or who turned a finger to
gecure their electi on we extend our
congratulations and guarantee that the
trust will be kept.

ney already. The great dry spell has
made the stream a little low and it is
feared some of them will get fever dur-
ing the awful journey. Reeder, Ham-

All Hopes Blasted.
The result in Centre county surpassed
the expectations of the most sanguine.
Nearly every precinct reports Democra-
tic gains and the old Republican rooster
is making tracks for the hencoop along
the banks of Salt River. Notwith-
standing the strenuous efforts to elect
Messr’s HaMiLToN and MILLER, at the
expense of the rest of their ticket, the
Republican leaders have met their Wa-
terloo. Centre county knows where to
find the officers who suit it best and un-
hesitatingly calls for them.

Reports from everyquarter of the State
manifest the greatest satisfaction over
Ithe working of the new BaxEkr ballot
\system and it is probable, that after
slight modifications, it will be numbered

the State. The countless objections

| have been met by the overwhelming
satisfaction which it seems to have giv-

| not exactly what we want, for the test
|disclosed many imperfections and
much useless work in its conduction,
but the experience of the State will be
taken advantage of at the next session
of the Legislature aud all such imper-
fectionsjeradicated.
Contrary to the expectations of every
one a very small percentage of votes
was lost on account of mistakes in
marking, the test evidence of the intel
lizence of those who cast them. The
great scare that thousands would be
disfranchised, because of inability to
properly mark the tickets, bas proven
a Republican bugaboo, and thanks to
our inherent dispositions to be curious
very few stayed away from the polls.

the campaign was all the people needed
by which to see him in his true colors,
blasted. No more will he soar on the
wings of hope to those realms which on-

been run and the “honest, hard work-
ing farmer (?)’” must return to the
secluded haunts in College township.
