KenpeLw Co. : Gents—I would like to make known to those who are almost persuaded to use Kendall's Spavin Cure the fact that I think itis a most excellent Liniment. Ihave used it on a Blood Spavin. The horse went on three legs for three years when I commenced to use your Kendall’s Spavin Cure. I used ten bottles on the horse and have worked him for three years since and has not been lame. Yours traly, WM. A. CURL. GErMANTOWN, N. Y., Nov. 2, 1889. De. B. J. Kenpauwr Co.: Enosburgh Falls, Vt. Gents—In praise of Kendall's Spavin Cure I will say, that a year ago I had a valuable youn horse ome very lame, hock enlarged an swollen.” The horsemen about here (we have no Veterinary Surgeon here) pronounced his lameness Blood Spavin or Thoroughpin, they all told me there was no cure for it, he became about useless, and I considered him almost worthless. A friend told me of the merits of your Kendall's Spavin Cure, so I bought a bot- tle, and I could see very plainly great improve- ments immediately from its use, and before the bottle was used up I was satisfied that it was doing hi a great deal of good. I bought a second bottle and before it was used up my horse was cured and has been in the team do- ing heavy work all the season since last April showing no more signs of it. I consider your Kendall’s Spavin Cure a yaluable ‘medicine, and it should be in every stable in the land. Respectfully yours, EUGENE DEWITT. Prices §1 per bottle, or six bottles for $5. The Humane and Generous Acts of No- ble Warriors. It is related of Henry IV., the first French King of the house of Bourbon, | that while besieging Paris, at that time held against him by the Catholic league, he was urgently advised to take the city by assault before troups daily expected | trom the king of Spain could arrive to (succor the leaguers. He knew that by a determined assault he could carry the works before him, but he protested against it on the principle of humanity. “I will not,” said he “expose the cap- ital of my country to the miseries and horrors which must follow such an event. I willshow to my people that I am their father; and I will tollow the example of the true mother who present- ed herselt before Solomon. I will not gain the prize through the slaughter of innocent persons.’ In time Henry reduced the city with the loss of bit few lives. In a subse- quent conversation upon the subject of the number slain, he exclaimed: “Ifit were in my power I would give anything but my kingly honor to re- deem those citizens, and to have the sat- isfaction of informing posterity that I had subdued Paris without spilling a drop of blood.” In the war of 1796 between France and Austria, the Archduke Charles, when hastening from Bohemia to take command of the Austrian army, met, near the scene of a late action, a large number of wounded soldiers, both French and Austrians, who in the haste of retreat and pursuit, had been aban- doned where they had fallen. The only horses at hand which could possibly be used in removing these helpless sufferers were attached te the artillery. “Let the cannons be left behind” said the humane prince, ‘and let these poor fellows be saved.” And when ore of his generals remonstrated, he added : “No, no ; let it be as I have ordered. The life of one brave man is better worth preserving that fifty pieces of ord- inance.” When the French General Moreau, into whose hands the cannon thus aban- doned had fallen, learned the mo- tive which had prompted the archduke to make the sacrifice, he ordered the whole to be restored, observing that he should be unworthy of being the oppo- nent of his imperial highness if he took advantage of so noble an act of human- ity. Ten Million Dimes Put Away. Effect of che Craze About the Pocket Savings Bank. A treasury official in Washington, speaking of the embarrassment the dime pocket savings banks are causing the Treasury Department, is quoted as say- ing that it is estimated that there are $1,000,000 in dimes hidden away in these pocket banks to-day, and there ap- pears to be no way to draw upon this reserve until the bank is glutted to its full capacity. It is gettingto be a craze. “[ was coming down the other day on a horse car,” he said, “and an old lady pulled one of these toy depositories out of her black silk hand bag and cau- tiously slipped two dimes into its mouth, | the exact change she had received from the conductor. Ordinarily, this ancient female would have paid her fare in tick- ets, but she had the craze and wanted the change. Why, every other woman in the building hus a bank, and lots of the men, too. There are a thousand dime banks in active operation in the department alone and thousands in the other departments, and ten thousand more in the hands of Washington chil- dren, and every one of them has a wide- open mouth yawning to devour the frac- tional coin.” It is estimated that 70 per cent. of the dimes that were in circulation three months ago in the city have been bank- ed in these little tubular depositories, and the cry is for more. The craze has affected other cities, too. Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia and other corumercial towns are sorely put to for change of this unit of value. This demand is giving ‘he bank cashiers and Sub-Treasurers a great deal of wor- ry, for it requires three expert clerks a whole day to count $10,000 in this sort of money. : How to Save Boys. ‘Women who have sons to rear, and dread thc demoralizing influences of as- sociates, ought to understand the nature of young manhood. It is excessively restless. It is disturbed by vain ambi- tions, by thirst for action, by longings for excitements, by irrepressible desires to touch life in manifold ways. If you mothers rear your sons so that your homes are associated with the repression of natural instincts, you will be sure to throw them in the society that in any meausure cansupply the end of their hearts. They will not go to the public house at first for the love of liquor; they go for the animated and hilarious companionship they find there, which they find does so mach to repress the disturbing restlessness in their breasts. See to it, then, that their homes com- pete with public places in their attrac- tiveness. Open your blinds by day, ard light bright fires by night. Iilume your room. Hang pictures upon the walls. Put books and newspapers upon your tables. Have music and eater- taining games. Banish demons of dull- ness and apathy that have so long rul- ed in your household, and bring in mirth and cheer, Invent occupation for your sons. Simulate their ambi- tions in worthy direetions. While you make home their delight fill them with higher purposes than mere pleasure. Whether they shall pass happy boy- houd, and enter upon manhood with refined tastes and noble ambitions, de- pendson you. Do not blame miserable har-keepers if your sons miscarry. Be- lieve it possible that with exertion and right means, a mother may have more contro! of the destiny of her boy than any other influences whatever.
