Brainy Elephants. Huge Pachyderms that Exhibit an Intel- ligence Almost Human. Adam Forepaugh, Jr., stands unrival- ed as a developer of the intelligence and imitative faculties of the elephant. His success has not been confined to one or two of the big pachyderms, but has en- compassed a whole herd of the ponder- ous beasts. His favorite group of per- forming elephants, a notable feature of the combined “Wild West” and Fore- paugh Shows, which, by the way, exhi- bit here on Glass Works Meadows, Sat- urday, May 24 do everything but talk— and even their brute language seems at times intelligible. The ‘elephant quad- rille,”” which they execute with the courtly grace of ladies and gentlemen of the old school, is amazing, yet ludicrous- ly funny. Elevating themselves upon their hind feet, they embrace each other with a warmth apparently real, and then as the band begins to play, go through the movements of the quadrille with due regard to time and music. But this is only one of the accomplishments that their painstaking trainer has taught them. They beat drums, ring bells, play at see-saw, form pyramids and in various other ways exhibit what human intellect can do with brute intelligence. “Murphy,” the clown elephantof Adam Forepaugh, Jr’s herd, is a complete show in himself. The amusing antics of this little elephant keep the audience roaring with laughter. He does every- thing that any human Grimaldi can do. Murphy’s companion, in size if not in humor, is the pugilistic baby elephant, Johm L. Sullivan. The elephantine John L. uses only one glove, which is fastened on his trunk, but it is safe to say that even the Boston boy would have no show against him in a four- round contest in a twenty-four foot ring. He is proud of his pugilistic hon- ors, and pummels his keeper with a pe- culiar look in his eyes very suggestive of inward satisfaction. The elephants are but one of a thous- and features in the great “Wild West” and Forepaugh combined shows. A Ghastly Banqwot, April never comes but that I think of a prominent local politician of the west side, who was born in this month, and who, some years ago, left one of the odd- est wills on record. Among its curious provisions were that, instead of being buried, he should be dissected, and his skeleton carefully preserved and mount- ed ; that on the skull should be written the names of the five women he had loved during his life time, and upon his birthday a supper party should be held by his friends, at which his skeleton should be brought out and christened with champagne. He left a small fortune, and his in- structions are followed out to the letter every year. His friends include a £20re of physicians, writers end politi- cians, who meet on his birthday nicht, have a good supper, at which his skele- ton occupies a chair, and, when the teasts begin, they pour a glass of wine over the varnished skull.” The names are still there, but blarred and faint, though, strange to say, nct one of the bearers of them is yet dead. When the eonvivialities are over the remains are locked up for another year. The friends, hewever, are passing away, amd of the originalf forty only twenty-seven re- main.— New York Star. SyMToMS oF CATARRE.—Dull, heavy headache, obstruction of the nasal pas- sages, discharges falling from the head into the throat, sometimes profuse, wa- tery, and acid, at others, thick, tenaci- ous, mueous, purulent, bloody and put- rid ; the eyes are weak, watery, and in- flamed ; there is ringing in the ears, deafness, hacking or coughing to clear the throat, expectoration of offensive matter, together with scabs from ulcers ; the voice is changed and has a nasal twang ; the breath is offensive ; smell and taste are impaired ; there is a sensa- tion of dizziness, with mental depression, a hacking cough and general debility. If you have all, or any considerable number of these symptoms, you are suf- fering from Nasal Catarrh. The more complicated your disease has become, the greater the number and diversity of symptoms. Thousands of cases annually without manifesting half of the above symptoms, result in consumption, and endein the grave. No disease is s0 com- mon, more deceptive and dangerous, or less understood, or more unsuccessfully treated, by physicians. Five hundred dollars reward is offered by the manufac- turers of Dr. Sage’s Caturrh Remedy, for a case of catarrh which they cannot cure. Remedy sold by druggists, at at only 50 cents. Every day they gain new laurels! Most popular when most ills abound ! EGG SLaw.—Chop finely some tender white cabbage. Let it lay in water half an hour before using. Drain all the water from it. To about three cupfuls of cabbage use a tablespeonful of sugar, one teaspoonful of salt, one ot French mustard. After mixing well together add two well beaten eggs in a cupful of boiling vinegar, a little cayenne and a teaspoonful of butter. Pour this over the cabbage, toss well together and serve. An Important Element of Hood's . Sarsaparilla is the fact that every pur- chaser receives a fair equivalent for his money. The familiar headline ¢100 Doses One Dollar,” stolen by imitators, is original with and true only of Hood’s Sarsaparilla. This can easily be proven by any one who desires to test the mat- ter. For real economy, buy only Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Sold by all druggists. EE Corp LeMoN PuDDING.—One-half box of gelatine soaked in four table- spoonfuls of water for ten minutes ; add a pint of boiling water, juice of two lemons, one cupful of sugar. Strain and set away to cool. When cold stir in the whites of three well-beaten eggs. A thin boiled custard or thick cream may be used to pour over the pudding. Ask Your Frienps Asour IT.— Your distressing cough can be cured. We know it because Kemp's Balsam within the past few vears has cured so many coughs and colds in this commu- nity. To such persons Dr. Pierce's Favorite Preseription is an especial boon, as it offers a sure and safe cure for all those distressing disorders to which women are peculiarly subject, while it saves a modest girl or woman from the embarrassment of a personal consultation with a physician. “Favorite Prescription’ is the only medicine for woman's peculiar weaknesses and ail- ments, sold by druggists, under a posi- tive guarrantee from the manufacturers, that it will give satisfaction in every case, or money will be refunded.
