Once on a time a pansy grew Close by a farmer's door ; It drank the sunshine and the dew — What eould it wish for more ? The farmer's children at their play Watched it with pleasure day by day. “How beautiful and sweet,” they cried, “It is our guest, you see.” But to itself the pansy sighed : “I would much rather be A dweller in some mansion grand, More admiration I'd command.” Now, so it happened. Fate decreed It should be plucked ; and soon “Twas in a mansion, grand, indeed, Where other flow’rs did hloom— Flow’rs of suzh rare hue and grace, That pansy felt quite out of place. Great velvet roses, lilies fair And flow’rs of every land, Whose fragrance perfumed all the air Within that mansion grand, And guests in admiration vied— But ne’er the pansy onze espied. Too late this little flow’ret saw What foolish pride had done ; Oh ! to be in the field once more, And drink the dew and sun, Where e’en the children, day by day Stopped and caressed it while at play ! Some lives just like this little plant, Because of humble spheres In which they dwell, are discontent And waste vain sighs and tears, Who, were they where they long to be, Would find but pain and misery. Me ————— An Iron Devil. An Especially Murderous Locomotive on the East Tennessee Railroad. There is a particularly vicious engine on the East Tennessee road. It has killed twenty-seven men, and engineers and firemen feel a superstitious dread whenever they have to take a run on the rails with this man killer. «J sometimes feel,” said a grizzled old stoker a few days ago, ‘‘that there is a murderous spirit in that engine. She killed two men before she got on the rails. While she was being steamed up in the shops a plug blew out, and two mechanics were scalded to death. Then it was brought south and sent out on its first run. She mounted the rails and plunged down an embankment, killing her engineer and fireman. “Soon afterwards she was fixed up and put on the road again. She ran for a while all right, until one night the en- gineer that was driving her saw a head- light bearing down on him and tried to reverse the lever and run back ; but the engine acted like a mule and wouldn’t answer to the throttle. She went whirl- ing on and crashed into the other train. Five men were killed in the two engine boxes. “But I can’t remember half the devil- try that engine has played. Once she seemed to get into the dumps while on the road and just wouldn’t be managed. She acted as if the devil was in her cyl- inders. Whenever the engineer pulled open the throttle she would storm down the track like a hell cat, and it was like stopping a bucking bronco to get her down to a quiet pace. “An emigrant train was running ahead, and the engineer of the mankiller had orders to look out for it. After a run of an hour or so he came in sight of the emigrant train as it rumbled slowly up a heavy grade; then it disappeared over the crest and this devil of an engine went charging up and over about a min- ute behind. The engineer expected to see the emigrants away down the track, but they had slowed up and were only a few hundred yards ahead. Down went the engine bellowing like mad, and as soon as the emigrants heard it, out they steamed as fast as they could. But the old hell cat could outrun the Flying Dutchman, and there was no stopping her. She rushed down, eating up the space between her and her prey. Eager faces were looking out the windows of the passenger car ahead, and the en- gineer, fireman and coaler, when they found that they could not check the speed of the engine. stood at the doors ready for a leap. —- “They had to take it pretty soon. Al- ready the emigrants were leaping from the steps and rolling down the sides of the embankment. The enginemen wait- ed till the last moment before the crash, and leaped for Jife—but were all killed. “I am afraid to say how many lives ‘were lost] as the engine tore into that train packed with emigrants, but it swelled the list of the men that the old brute had killed. “No matter what road she is on--and she has been on a great many—she has kept on killing the men who stood at her throttle. We all feel a little ner- vous when we have to run her, for when you steam her up it seems to put the devil in her.”’—Atlanta Joarnal. The Bird's Drinking Fountain. In June of 1889 I had occasion to be out a mile or thereabouts from the town of Kentville, and was for some time detained in a strip of clearing about for- ty rods wide. While there I noticed woodpeckers continually crossing this clearing from one block of wooas to the other. I thought nothing of it at first, as these birds are very common here, but after a constant stream of them had been going and coming for some time I determined to go across a small field to a point of hard woods, where they all seemed to be going, and see if I could find the cause, expecting of course to find an old dry tree containing a couple or more nests of young birds, as I supposed the old birds were carrying food. On reaching the hill I looked around for the dry tree, but could see none. On further examination I dis- covered that the woodpeckers were fly- ing to and away fiom the top of a liv- ing white birch tree. Selecting a con- venient seat, I waited there for some time to see what was going on. About 45 feet up this tree the woodpeckers had thickly perforated the bark a space of about ten inches around the trunk, causing the sap to flow freely. 1 soon discovered that this was a drinking fountain, not only for the birds who had so diligently worked to bore these holes, but it seemed that all the small birds to the neighborhood were coming here in get a share of the sweet sap that was continually flowing from the woundel tree. At intervals when there would be no woodpeckers present the little fly- atchers and warblers would come for a drink, as well as to capture insects that had been attracted there by the sweet sap. At a time when there were no other birds = occupying this drinking fountain, two little humming birds im- proved the opportunity of quenching their thirst, but darted away on the first appearance of any of the larger birds, I have often noticed our com- mon red squirrel nip the bark of the maple in the spring and drink freely from the sap. 1 have also seen the yellow bellied sapsucker bore a single hole through the bark of a birch tree and drink the sap. I do not think they return to the same place when they want another drink, but in- stead they make another hole in the nearest suitable tree. These perforated spots on trees have often come to my notice, but I had supposed it was done for insects that might be found in or under the bark, and was not aware that the work was done wholly for the purpose of making a drinking fountain.—Forest and Stream. Pillows Made of Love Letters. The latest device of girlhood is =a facy for stuffing pillows with their oll love letters, There is one thing about the contents of these pillows with a mark- ed degree of certainty—they are sure to besoft. Now, the question naturally arises, must the pillows be stuffed with letters from a single person, or many missives from John and Jack and Algernon be tumbled promiscaous- lyin together ? Is it a test of loyalty that when once a girl really falls in love, or thinks she does, she discards from her pillow all the letters save those of the object of her deepest affec- tion ? And how does marriage affect the fate of the pillow? Do husbands enjoy having their wives’ faces buried in a mass of soft nothings that other men haye written to them ? And what dreams may come, and what skimpy flat little pillows some poor girls must have ; but how nice it is for the men to reflect that their adored ones slumber softly on their words of love. EyxBaryiNg—Our present methods of embalming are so superior to those of the ancient Egyptians that a modern might leave a human body so perfect that after 3,000 years, says the Lancet, “not a leniement need be wanting for identification that would not satisfy even the contemporary of the dead per- son.” The mummies unrolled nowa- days are dried up out of recognition. But the embalming process is liable to go ou’ of use before the advancing practice of cremation. ——Congressman (at home, among his constituenfs )—‘“Gentlemenand fel- low citizens: I want you to tell me what in your opinion, needs.’ unanimity)—‘“Shorter sessions of Con- gress 7—N. ¥.
