The Democratic Watcninan. LIELLEFONTE, PA Letter from the Oil Region Sepi. 22d, 1870 p. OKAY MEEK :—‘4f you have never visited the Oil Region of Pennsylva -OM, you should do so at . once. The Oil Region of this State la a wonder. That the earth should provide such a-, disagreeable substance tts crude oil la truly wonderful; and any person who has any desire to he any body should' visit the Oil Region of Venango Conn. Or. The great cnriosity,a flowing well, h a s ceased to exist. \Vella are no l o nger permitted to , flow—modern im provements and experience have shown that flowing wells are not profitable; HO that now a flowing well is not to be seen in all the Region. In old oil do ings, all of the good and most noto rious wells were flowing wells. Many of your renders will remember the Co queue, Jersey and Reed wells--all ele gant wells in their day, but now noth lug hut dirty looking holes in the ground. Millions of dollars they have made for their proprietor, and they ought to be respected now that they are played out, and, in comparison to what they once were, defunct. The oil business now is quite a different ar rangement to what it was in the earl part of 1864 and 186.5. The business is relayed to a science, to a certainty ; no more guessing and speculating, but hard working and close watching. A man now can borrow money at sixty , lensc territory, pit down a hole, awl be ready to pay his rent at mato ruy with more certainty than in any other husiness, providol he uses ordina n discretion in hut location. A visit to the Oil Region will con voice any min that there is more man cv being made there now than in any other part of the United States. Some few days ago. I found myself travelling on the Allegheny It. It., passing Par ker's landing, which is on the other rude of the River from the hail Road. This place sonic short time ago was all the attraction, lint it is now rather on the decline. It has lied its (lay and midi,' largely to "the wealth of the County. Passing along tip, Franklin and as vicinity pre.iented itself. The sole of the Bluff on ale way to Oil Car just Mime Franklin presents a lively appearance of new derricks, which Is a nure nigh that there is a new oil (hel met struck, and I was informed that they were getting good wells, at crag Trig twenty five barrels of heavy oil. This Bluff was thought a few years ago to tie worth nothing, a few wells had been put down along the creek across front the old mill in Franklin and found worthless, but a lest inn Bred yards Mealier struck the sand, and now they are Witting down wells its rapidly as possible e'olver's pet city, Reno, is played out. oil ( the old rut, hulls been trailed It It tire revent 1 , • pi from the vi rest to r part lip to oppo rite re I he "LI crap° !louse once I. Venango city, on the other side, is looking pote like it Yankee town and has many fine wooden buildings. Some of your read ers will remember this place better by the name of Laytenuz. Several Rail Roads have their de isitmn this part of Od City. The At. issue it W. Western, Allegheny Val ley,the Franklin and .1 indown and the nil ('reek road. The Juntown has its depot on the site of the old Cr ipo llouseon old Oil City, and cuts through the point of the hill and comes out of the tunnel very nearly upon an acre of Ittnil that once belonged to a company called the Loganjust 'thine the 140 , it , Bulge across Oil creek, and follows' along up oil creek on that nide, puss mg again through another valuable property of the Logan. Taking the ears f.ir up the creek, we lIILSIS Mont; through the old Graff Hanson ; now all built up, through the Clapp and bate a look at the Duncan Mill, as It ,111.1111,1 out in the sun shine. Come to Rouse ville—pass the Johnny Steele -- pass through the Ryad -through the Blood and mu to the Tarr There we shop; ideed, we have been stopping at a. number or sintums, tor the valley of the creek is one village its entire length. We stop on the Tarr, on the lease of our Half Moon company, arid find that it's built up solid, there being nothing upon it looking like an oil -4441. We cross over on to the Story, tnJ find that the Columbia company have been putting down wells away op on the hilly and the name on the Dal zell. I his company, they say, went straight 'thong all the time, putting down Went; and paying dividends, and is now fabulously wealthy. We final ly arrive at Petrolnin Centre, which is now the centre of the oil producing territory ur the United States. I be lieve that the vicinity of Petroleum Centre has produced more oil than any other place, and it is now producing more than any of the other parts of the Region The recent strike on the James McCray farm, promises to be one of the best in the county. The MeGray farm ix J omt bock or what ix known ax the Hyde Egberi finis ' and adjoining it biv the rise of the lAN. The Dalzerl company some years ago attempted to put down a large hole, ten by twerve, min the bill on the Phoni er road, just along side the Ifyde R Eg bert, and owned sonic territory above on the same 1011. The hole was abet men put (town a well on ll a Daizell property, near the line of J ames M e . GraYi wlurh rr,°"ii to be a big well. Leases were 1111itiolintely taken on the Jame 'i(LeCray, at one thousand dot lase bonus, and hall the oil on the acre lease, and nom; an the territory James McCray wished I() lease was taken. It does not take as long now as it did in 1864 arid 1865 to put down a well; three or lour of these leases of McCray's pros s ed to be extraordinary, none of the werls..being less than a hundred barrels, and are as high as three hundred and fifty barrels per day. There are now down arid pump ing some eight weds on this farm, primping about seventeen hundred bar rels per day, and some forty more be ing pot down as rapidly as possible. Among the now producing wells is the one called the General K. E. Lee; the working interest, which is one-half of the production, belongs td J. M. Kep ler, of Philipsburg, and two other gen tlemen of Petroleum Centre, who here tofore have been very unfortunate in the oil. This K. E. Lee well produced at first about two hundred barrels, but it is now producing one hundred and forty to one hundred and fitly barrels per day. J. M. Kepler and his part ners arasputting%lown four other wells in thin territory, and in a few days will have one or two producing. Early in the oil excitement in 1864, our friend, Geo. M. Kelper, secured a lease from .lances McCray of an acre Sn this field where there are now so many producing wells. George put , down ft bole at that time, but war thought a little foolish fur going up on the hill. After considerable expense and much trouble, George Sureyeded in getting is large vein of gas, coslrollg that it interfered with pumping the well, the gas filing 50 strong some times as to run the succor rods up through the top of the derrick, but George did not get oil. The lease was an old fashioned lease and had no for feiture in it, and .4).0w it is among the most valuable on the James MeCray farm. Jacob M. Kepler and his par• ners are now putting down three wells on this acre lease. Tide land of James McCray's, has a history. Doctor Egbert, in 1864, they say, offered MeCray three hundred thous and dollars for his land, which kick(' ed some two hundred and severity acres, but MeCiny refused to take it People said Doctor Egbert was a. Tool for making the offer and James Me- Cray was a fool for not taking it. IL is estimated now that McCrsy will no afire et least three millions of dollar); feta. this very land, and a calculation is made that his income is five dollars per minute at this time. If this is cor reef, what will 1118 income be when all 01 the wells arc down and producing .lames Mceray is a gentleman of from 45 to -17 years of age, tall and square shouldered, rather than in the face, whiskers and beard slightly sprinkled with white; and appears to he perfect ly well qualified to takecareof Iris pre sent manure. Ile, I believe, is a mem ber of the Presbyterian church at Pe troleum Centre, and is ready to do any thing necessary towards forwarding the interest of the church in a pecuniary way. Very much to the disappoint ment ((f many who hang around him for the purpose of making money out of the drippings from 1118 fat ,411.1,, he in discreet in his transartions and mod est and moderate in his wants, looking and tutting as unlike a millionaire as one could imagine Altogether he ap pears to be just the man to have 111011- ey, and who will Maki' a substantial use of his good fortune, and 1101, waive it in foolish investments to amuse him self or a set of hangers on who follow in the wake of a wealthy 1111111. WII ham Met brother of James, owns the land adjoining As yet there have been no great strikes on the land of McCray. James Met and William are both Democrats, which may be one reason why they are en Bpeelally favored with good fortune; '.Vellum Met toting worth some two hundred thousand. The experience and flumes of several years in the oil region liar quite pit the old fashioned way of putting down wells, and, indeed, the whole sys tern. Now, after a lease is secured, a hole is put down to the solid rock like an ordinary water well for it cominctor pipe, then the earth is filled trLarolind this pipe. 'rile derrick being up, tools weighing 1,500 pounds are put down and the hole is put down rapidly for about 325 ft. about R inches in divine ter Then the hole is sand lumped and a casing in put down on the rock, which is called the montain said. This easing is let down and then haul ed up a few inches and let drop, no dolt it fits at the bottom water fight or nearly so; the sand pump is then run down and twenty five or thirty feet of water in taken out of this casing; then the heavy tools are put down again, and the whole — run down sonic fire hundred feet. The hole now, after be mg cleared of the borings, is rea r the tubing. The hole is/ putn through what oil men call the third said, and some ten or fifteen feet be low it. This third sand is a very im portant feature to oil men, as it has been ascertained that where it is very deep or thick that the wells are larger arid more likelr to last. This white sand 14 WO It rock but a mixture of pebbles and sand, running doyen from loathe size ofa pen to the ordinary sand and is an white as pewter sand. Drillers nay the upper surface is often very bard. This third sand is sonic forty feet thick on the James MeCray. More anon.
