her in his power, took her to Georgetown,
where, by threats, lie kept her from engag

and compelled her to write to her mother,
that she had procured a clerkship, on the
penalty of being exposed to her and to the
world A few weeks and her destroyer,
tired of his viotim,deserted her. For dale
she sought for him, and when, meeting him
by chance, al the door of the office he was
filling, she begged of hint. but for enough
of money to bring her back to her home,
whiagg&e would confess all to her moanr
and try ave herself; the brute spurned
her from him with a curse, and calling a
policeman had her led as a vagrant.
No one appearing against her, she was dis
charged, with a reprimand from the judge.

commenced a career that could only end in
