Tredit of our town,we had rather not record.
A icenewhlch causes a blush of shame to
tinge the cheek of every respectable, liber

t ironbitlf inatters that we would prefer
to leave unpublished, and this is ono of them.
But, as it seems to be our. province, we
84,11 tell the whole, truth of the matter,
without fear, favor a partiality,
Mr. William Elliott, formerly a resident
of this town, married a daughter of °he of
our oldest and moat respected citizens,
Eiamuel Harris, Esq., some (en or twelve
years previous to the breaking out of the
War. With his wife, WI removed to the
"Sunny South," and took up his abode in
the State of Tennessee. long years of as
sociation with the people of the South at
tached him to them and their instiraions.
He was kindly find cordially !rented by the
Southerners, and his worldly affairs pros
pered finely:" When the war broke out,
believing it. to bit his duty, he took up arms
kale cause of Southern independence, and
was fit and by promoted tofinajorship in
Confederate service, being attached, we
' believe, to the command. of Uen. John Vor
gad. As a soldier, he did his duty well,
and was a brave and reliable officer. He
iris finally captured by our troops rind . for
a hing time detained in confinement as a
prisoner of war. During his period of ser
+rice in the Confederate army he was fre
quentlyseen by soldiers from this minim),
and town who were prisoners, and they all
bear testimony to his uniform kindness and
consideration for them, doing all in his
power to make them comfortable, and, if
possible, to procure their release. To souni
be gave money, and Lieutenant Thomas, of
of this plaoe, will bear witness that Major-
Elliott's exertions and Infiuenciiiu all prob
ability saved his. hje, and procured him a
parole of honor; and that be also gave him
a horse and twenty-five dollars In money to
enable him to reach home. TIN shows the
kindly feeling of the man. and is a complete
refutation of the infamous charge that lie
Wan a guerrilla and a murderer.

war, Mrs. Elliott, owing to the unsettled
