In two years and a half, we have ext: rminated and desolated the eastern slope of Virginia, the bor- der counties in Missouri, a con— siderable portion of Louisana— but it is eighteen hundred miles from the Pctomac to the Rio Grande, and the desolation and extermination of fiifty miles per year, for eighteen hundred miles, 1s a work of thirty-six years the probable duration of the war, under the new Lincoln program- me, The war might be over, and would be over, with a change of administration, in six months— because a new administration, would change all this existing programme. 1t would attempt, insist upon and enforce the Unity end Indi- visibility of the repnblic, and end with nothiug short of it ; but it would, at the same time, with the sword, carry the olive brauch and so, leaving ncthing for the south to fight for, divide that south, upon the principle of self- government, and in the end, vol- unary bring back this south. The conservative policy tuw- ard the south would Le such, that, leaving the south nothing to fight for, no secession or war party could be maintained in that south. INFALLIBLE REMIDIES.— We have no faith in quack medicines but think it is always best when sick to apply to a regular physic- ion. There are however, some simple remidies, for certain disor- ders, which we can recommend as infalible : For sea home. For drunkenness—drink cold water. For accidents—keep out of danger-, For fear of sheriffs—pay your deps. To be happy—be honest. To please all—mind your own busiuvess. To make money—advertise. To have a conscience—keep the commandments. To do right—take home your newspaper. To prevent stammering —s peak nothing To sleep well—be industrious. To have your memory blessed -—pay the printer.
