she omission of persons whose
names should have been cnrolled,
and by the addition of names of
persons who by reason of alien-

General,
TRAITORS.
Not long since a lady residing
in the State of New York, while
en route for Toledo to visit a
friend, met in our depot the lady
whom she was wishing to see.
Luckily the latter lady was on
ber way home, and thus the two
travelled the remainder of the
journey together. During the
trip the following conversation
chanced to arise:
ToledoHave you any ‘Copper-
head’ Democrats in New York ?
New York—Well, no, none
that I ever heard of.
Toledo—Have you any ‘But-
ternuts’ or ‘Secessionists’ there ?
New York—I think not. I
never anything about them ; but
perhaps they are known by some
other name.
Toledo—Well, have you any
traitors in your section ?
New York—Traitors ? Ob,
yes, plenty of them ; but we
call them by a different name
in New York, we call them Abo-
itionists there.
‘he Toledo lady was perfectly
dumbfounded by this reply,
had nothing more to say.
ARTEMAS WARD.
I was fixin’ myself up to at-
tend the great war meetin’, when
my daughter entered with a
young man, who was evidently
from the city, and who wore long
hair, and had a wild expression
in his eye. In one hand he car-
riied a portfolio, and in his other
paw clasped a bundle of brushes.
My daughter intivduced him
as Mr. Sweiber, the extinguished
landscape painter from Philadel-
phy.
«He is an artist, papa. Here
is one of his masterpeices—a
young woman gazin’ admirably
upon her 1st born,” and my
daughter showed me a really
nice pictur, dun in ile. «Is it
not beautiful, papa? He throws
so much soul into his work.”
« Does he? does he ?”’said I.
«Well, I reckon I’d better hire
him to whitewash our fence; it
needs it. What will you charge,
sir.” I continued to throw some
soulinto my fence ?
My daughter went out cf the
roo in a very snort meteer, takin’
the artist with her, and from the
very emphatic manner in which
the door slammed I concluded
she was summut disgusted at my
remarks. She closed the door, I
must say it in italics. Iwenl in-
to the closet, and larfed all alone
by myself for over half an hour.

This class of Bitters has caused and will con-
tinae to cause, as long as they can be sold, hun-
dreds to die the death of the drunkard. By
their use the system iv kept continually under the
influence of Alchoholie Stimulants of the worst

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of

Although not disposed to favor or recommend
Patent Medicines in general, through distsust of
their ingredients and effects. I yet knew of mo
sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to
the benefits he believesto have received from any
simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus
contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the moro readily in regard to *Hoof-
land’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against thew for many years, under the impres-
sion that they were chiefly an aleoholic mixture.
I am indebted tomy friend Robert Shoemaker,
Esq. , for the removal of this prejudice by proper
tests, and for encouragement to tey them, when
suffering from great and long continued debility.
The use of three bottles of these bitters, at the
beginning of the present year, was followed by
evident relief, and restoration to a degroe of bod-
ily and mental vigor which I bad not felt for six
months before, and had almost despaired of re-
gaining I therefore thank God and my friend
for directing me to the use of them.
