How the Thing Works
One hundred and fifty-two
mullions of dollars, in gold and
silver, (the amount in circclation
here in the United States before
tiie war,) once represented the
seme property which is now rep-
resented by five hundred and
fifty millions of dollars, in paper.
If our currency, therefore, ac-
curately adjusted itself to a specie
basis, coffe, tea, sugar, flour,
lands, houses, rents, ¢e., would
be increased in price nearly four-
fould, and four dollars in paper
would be required to purchase
one dollar in gold. A patriotic
confidence prevents this vast and
ruinous increase, and, believing
in strength and integrity of our
country, we accept government
notes at as near their nominal
value as the inexorable laws of
trade with other nations still
dealing on a specie baisis will al-
Jow. This is so much to our
credit as a loyal and confiding
people. But confidence has its
limits. Double as much paper
money will probaly be issued be-
fore the waris over. Ifso, a cor-
responding depreciation must be
the result.—Then, when peace
comes to us, and all business
must perforce return to a specie
baisis, a crash will be inevitable.
—The value of everything, in-
flated to the paper money stand--
ard, must fall to the gold standard,
and wise will he be who, having
been forewarned, will have pre-
pared himself for such « mutual
adjustment of gold and curren—
cy.
#3&> Goon, AnyHow.—At the
dinner-table of a hotel, some—
where in Ohio, not long since, a
‘green un,’ unable to restrain the
cravings of his appetite, pitched
into a large dish of rice before
him. A waiter mildly informed
him that it was intended for de-
sert, and that he had better eat
something else first. Greeny re-
plied :
“Desert be blamed, I don't care
if it’s a wilderness, it’s good, and
I'm going to eat it.”
Formirication of Braury.—In

has invented a weapon that may
be inserted inthe handle of a
ladys parasol, and will drive a
ball through an inch and a half
plank at a distance of ten rods.
Steel clad and armed with these

A Toven QuestioN®The de-
bateing societies down east have
got up a new subject for discuss-
ion. It is that a picerel was
caught the other day with a squir-
rel inits stomach. Th2 question
arises, “Did the squirrel go into
the water after the picerel, or the
picerel go up the tree after the
squirrel 2”

A TOUGH STORY.
While crossing the East Boston
Ferry on a very foggy morning
not long since, I heard the follow-
ing story from an old down—east
farmer, which struck me as about
tongh enough for the drawer:
A rather loquacious individual
was endeavoring to draw the old
gentleman into conversation, but
hitherto without much success,
the old fellow having sufficient
discernment to see that his object
was to make a little sport for the
passengers at his expense.
At length says loquacious indi-
vidual :
“I spose you consider Down
East a right smart place; but I
guess it would puzzle them to get
up quite so thick a fog as having
here this moruing, woulden’t it 7
‘fell, said the old man, <I
don’t know about that. I hired
one of your Massachutetts chaps
to work for me last summer, and
one rather foggy mornin’l sent
him down into the meadow to lay
a few courses of shingles on a
new barn I was finishin’ off. At
dinper-time the fellow came up,
and, sez he, “That’s an almighty
long barn of yourn.—Sez I, ‘Not
very long.’ «Well, sez he, I’ve
been to work all forenoon, and
haven’t got one coyrse loid yet.’
sWell,« sex 7, You're a laz vy fel-
low, thats all I've got to say.
And so after dinner 1 went down
to see what he’d been about, and
I'll be thundered ef he hadn't
shingled more than two hundred
feet right on tothe fog !”’— Harper.
“Do you know why so many of
our Democrats are joining the Re-
publican party,” askeda Demo-—
crat of a friend the other day ?
“Yes, gir,” he replied. «It is
because they can afford to pay
them for coming and we can’t at-
ford to pay them for stopping.”
Like any. other commercial ques-
tion, Ivis narrowed to the limits
of demand and supply.
B= A German was relating
his marvelous escape from drown-

ions were lost by the upsetting
ofa boat, and he alone was
saved.
«And how did you escape their
fate # asked one of his hearers.
«? tid not co in te pote,” was
the placid answer.
Yea So would I.—«So you
are going to teach school 7” said
a young lady to her maiden
aunt. “Well, for my part, soon-

widower with nine children,” I
would prefer that myself,” was
was the quiet reply, but where,s

Although not disposed to favor or recommend
Patent Medicines in general, through distsust of
their ingredients and effects. I yet know of no
sufficient reasons why a man may not “testify to
the benefits he believesto have received from any
simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus
contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to "Hoof-
land’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for many years, under the impres-
sion that they were chiefly an aleoholic mixture.
I am indebted tomy friend Robert Shoemaker,
Esq. , for the removal of this prejudice by proper
tests, and for encouragement to try them. when
suffering from great and long continued debility.
The use of three bottles of these bitters, at the
beginning of the present year, was followed by
evident relief, and restoration to a degroe of bod-
ily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six
months before, and had almost despaired of re-
gaining I therefore thank God and my friend
