EDITING A PAPER
A contemporary lets off as fol-
Jows:
Eaiting a paper is not very
pleas.nt business If it contains,
too much political matter, people
won’t have it.
If it contains tco little, they
won’t have it.
Ifthe type is little, they can’t
read it.
If we publish telegraph reports,
folks say they are nothing but lies.
If we omit them, ‘people say
we have no enterprise, or sup—
press them for political effect.
If we have in a few jokes, they
say we are nothing but a rattle—
head.
If we omit jokes, they say we
are an old fossil.
It we publish original matter,
they blame us for not giving selec-
tions.
If we publish selections, folks
gay we are lazy for not writing
more, and giving them what they
have not read in some other pa-
per.
If we give a man a complimen-
tary notice, we are censured for
being partial.
If we do not all hands agree
we are a greedy dog.
If we insert an article which
pleases the ladies, the men are
Jealous,
If we do not cater to their
wishes, the paper is not fit to
have in the house,
If we attend church, they say
it is only for eftect.
If we do not denounced us as e-
ceitful and desperately wicked.
If we speak well of any act of
the President, folks say we dare
not do otherwise
If we censure, they call us trai-
" tor.
If we remain in the office and
attend to business, folks say we
are too proud to mingle with our
fellows.
If we go out they say we never
attend to business. :
If we don’t pay all bills prompt-
ly, folks say we are not to be
trusted.
If we pay them promptly folks
say we steal the money. :
It we wear poor clothes, they
say our business is poor.
If we wear good ones, they say
we are a spendthrift.

Lincory’s Burrocks —The vie-
tims of the Conscriptién bill are
now called «“Linsoln’s bullock’s.”
—In his letter to Govenor Sey--
mour, Lincoln justifies his own
unjust and inexorable enforce--
ment of the Conscriptioft by de--
claring that Jeff. Davis forces the
men of the South into his army,
“as butchers do bullocks into
slaughter pens.” Therefore, he,
Abraham Lincoln, has made up
his mind to do the same thing,
The figure is intirely worthy of
Lincoln's cause. He is forcing
men, who were once free, into his
negro liberateing army as butch—
ers force bullocks into the slaugh-
ter-pen. It is a slaughter-pen, and
the wretches who force men into
it are butchers. How long!
O, how long shall the people
be butchered to gult the hellish
rage of the abolitionists? How
long will the people allow them-
selves to be ingloriously butcher-
ed? iow long will they allow
themselves to be slaughtered like
bullocks.—0ld Guard.

again he says, “Now if you come
there I shall take you, but you
will "be safe there. That’s a
good move.” And then he winks
and turns to me saying, I am
not really playing, you know, in
earnest, only to amuse her,”

dreds to die the death of the drunkard. By
their use the system iv kept continually under the

Testifying of their own personal knowledge to

From Rev. J. Newton Brown, D. D., Editor of
the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge.
Although not disposed to favor or recommend
Patent Medicines in general, through distsust of
their ingredients and effests. I yet know of no
sufficient reasons why a man may not “testify to
the benefits he believesto have received fiom any
simple preparation, in the hope that he may thus
contribute to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily inregard to "Hoof-
land’s German Bitters, prepared by Dr. ¢. M.
Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced
against them for many years, under the impres-
sion that they were chiefly an aleoholic mixture.
I am indebted tomy friend Robert Shoemaker,
Esq. , for the removal of this prejudice by proper
tests, and for encouragement to try them, when
suffering from great aud long continued debility.
The use of three bottles of these bitters, at the
beginning of the present year, was followed by
evident relief, and restoration to a degroe of bod-
ily and mental vigor which I bad not felt for six
months before, and ‘had almost despaired of re-
gaining I therefore thank God and my friend
for directing me to the use of them.
