A friend Ty city |
bat who ison a visit to Owosso, |
Michigan, informs us of a very
singular and unaccountable af-|
fair, that is now transpiting in|
Bush Township, five miles north |
of Owosso. |
A farmer named Stearns, vesi- |
ding in thot town, has an adopted |
Jaughter by the name of Free-
wan, who is ten years old, While
this tittle girl was sweeping the
sitting-reom, about a week since,
che discovered the carpet to be
on fire, and the inmates having
put out the fire, undertook to
learn its origin, There had been
no fire built in the room that
morning; no light had Leen car-
red into the room, nor could the
family in any way account for
the five: In less than an hour
flatnes wetfe scen issuing from
the same rags in another room.
The same day the girl's clothes
caught five, and the next morn-
ing a damp towel that Mrs.
Stearns had used in wiping her
lice, upon being hung upon 2 nail
commenced burning.
This last occurrence took place
in the presence o some twelve
persons, some of whom are
among the most respec able citi-
zens of this place. Next, a straw
stack near Mr. Stearns’s house
was consumed. At one time,
when a number of persons were
in the house, the falling of some
heavy substance was heard in the
chamber directly over their heads
Upon going up stars it proved to
be a bag filled with books and
rags, and suspended by a cord to
a bein. Tle bag was on fire,
and the string was also burning
when the parties entered the
Joon.
Mr. 8S. and family became so
much alarmed by these move-
ments that they left thelr home.
When the furpiture was being
removed, a trunk, said not to
Live been opened for nore than
a year, was discovered to ke on
tire, and when opencd the flames
bust forth, consuming all its
contents.
The family are now living in
a house some three miles distant
from their fem, but the mysteri-
ous torment, termed by the
doubting a humbug.” by the
spiritualists, « the manifestations
of the spirit,” by the Milizrites,
«the per'od of fire and Dbrim-
stone,” and by Dr: Tappan, “the
works of the Devil,” is bound to
atick to them like a brother.
No sooner had the girl entered
her new home than her clothes
tok fivein three different places.
4nd now one other family, where
she has visited, are as badly tor-
mented as is the family of
Stearys.
In Owosso, as well as in the
adjoining village of Caruna, the
excitement is most intense. Peo-
ple are flocking from every direc-
tion to witness this truly wonder-
ful mystery. Some of the most
profound scholars of the State,
among whom are dr. Tappan,
Chancellor of the University ol
Misliean, President Fairchild of
Hillsdale College, and others,
Lave been to “see the sights,”
and all agree that there eve hid
dn mysteries eyed the depth
of the closest observers .—Clevr-

Warerers.
A man without a mind of his
own is the most helpless and
shiftless of social beings. His
hrain is a mere receptacle for
<hreds and patches of opinion
picked up in the streets, and the
same infirmity which leads him
# look to everybody save him-
self for guidance, renders him
incapable of selecting from the
multifarious counsel he receives
hat which is best adopted to his
exigencies. Nay, in his weak
bewilderment, he fails te make
any selection at all, and while
he wavers and hesitates the gold-
en opportunity for deeisive action
glips by, and leaves him flound-
ering in a ‘sea of trouble,” from
which one manly stride in al-
most any direction would have
extricated him.
‘But let the weak of purpose
sake heart. This unfortunate
propensity to vacillate may be

nas st its identity,
and is accustomed to take, {or the
time Leing, the hue of every
mind with which it comes in
contact, may learn to resolve and
execute on its own responsibility.
It must not he supposed that , we
would dissuade any one from fol-
lowing it in preference to his own
impulses. The very fact of a
man seeking counsel in the right
quarter and promptly adepting it,
is prima facie evidence that he has
a-mind of his cwn, that his judg-
ment is sound, that his reason is
stronger than his vanity. It is
not with those who brace them-
selves against a rock in time of
difficulty that we would remcn-
strate, but with the leaners on
reeds, the catchers at straws, the
chartless, pomt-no-point voyagers
on the ocean of life, who are
puffed hither and thither by ev-
ery idle breeze. Of all imped-
iments to success, instability is
the most fatal. It is eveu better
to be a sententious ass like « Buns-
by’ than a ¢ Walter the Doubter.’
Every young man on entering
the business world, should form
for himself or adept at the sug-
gestion of competent advisers, ¢
plan of life, Lased upon sound
morality, and shaped so as to ac-
cord with the bent and scope ot
his mental capacity. His course
chalked out, let him take the in-
domitable hero of the Pilgrim’s
Progress for his model, and with
a stout heart amid all dangers, a
pure conscience amid all tempta~
tions, and a clear Lead amid all
perplexities, push forward with
hope and confidence, leaving the
issue to Providence, and retaining
for his consolation the fact that
God never neglects to help those
who have the manliness to help
themselves.
American Bread Trampled in the
. Mud.
A letter from London to the
Phi‘adelphia Inquirer alludes to
facts which the English newspa-
pers charitably suppressed, as
follows:
«1 am sorry to see that a very
unpleasant demonstration was
made at Manchester, last Tues-
day, concerning which it is well
that you should have full partic-
ulars. It appears that a meeting
of the operatives in Manchester
had been called for that day, and
it was announced that the Rev.
W. C. Dennison, Chaplain of the
George Griswold, would be pres-
ent. This was all very well, and
the Manchester operatives would
gladly have listened to an ad-
dress from that gentleman. But
the managers of the meeting,
very ill-advisedly, also announc-
ed that on the occasion fifteen
thousand loaves of bread would
be distributed, composed of the
flour brought by the George Gris-
world, and representing the num-
ber of barrels of the staft of life
that composed her cargo. This
is a purely English way of do-
irg things. In the very dis-
pursement of charity there must
be a fuss” about it. They ov-
erleoked the fact, that while the
11 & INCASE
Manchester operatives would
thankfully participate in the
American contribution, when pre-
sented to them in the proper man-
ner, they were still men and wo-
men crough to resent the idea of
being paraded like so many pau-
pers, and sent home each with a
loaf of bread under his arm.—
The managers may have meant
well enough, but were sadly mis-
taken in their policy. Possibly,
however, if let alone, the opera-
tives would have submitted to
this public system of charity, but
it was too good an opportunity
for the Liverpool secessionists to
lose. Taking advantage of the
circumstanees, their emissaries
were sent down among the Man-
chester masses, and the result
was that when the hour for the
meeting arrived, instead of an
anxious and grateful assemblage
of men and women, theve was
only an excited and almost infu-
riated mob.
I may spare you the details,
but the end was that fifteen thous-
and loaves of bread, each weigh-
ing two pounds—thus represent-
ing some one hundred and fifty
barrets of flour—were taken from
the pans and thrown. into the |

“ieud, wherd they avers trampled
{under foot. The mob pelted each
(other with the convenient mis-
|giles, and a scene of excitement
Land confusion ensued, better im-
|agined than described. Of course
tie me ting, as such, was broken
up, and the day terminated in
this disgraceful row. These ap-
pear to be the facts, for which I
have no comment.
