    che Oath,
Bead Heading.
Speaking of “dead heads” the
editor of the Louisville Joursay
says: Railroads, steamboats,
and stage coaches complain of
dead heading—that is, to say, of
preachers, editors and breathern,
of the craft, riding so much with-
out pay. The newspaper press
endures more of this dead head-
ing than any three of those modes
of conveyance combined. The
pulpit the bar and the theatre, so-
cieties, religious benevolent, ag-
ricultural, mercantile establish-
ment, venders of quack medicines
railroads companies, stage lines
and every variety of individuals,
uding political parties, draw
«ely upon the hiberality of the
press. The press i: expected to
yield to all those inlerests ; is re-
guested to give strength to all
Weak institutions and enterprises,
it is asked to puff some preach-
ers into overshadowing pulpit or-
ators; to puff small politicians
and unprineipaled demagogues
into great men and patriots; to
magnify ine mpetent railroad of-
ficers into railroad kings, it is ex-
pected fo herald abroad the {ame
of quacks of all classes,
up dull authors, and immortalize
weak Congressional speeches.—

SHORT PATIENT SCRMON,
My BregrseriN.--You will find
uy text in the third epistle of
father Alraham to the law ma-
kers, and when you find it, it
shall read as follows, a-h :
But it is easier to pdy a large
sum than Mis a'larger one, and
it is easier to pay any sum when
we arc able than it is to pay it
before we ave able,” a-h.
My brectherin — How true are
the words of our text. Father
Abraham kuew they were true,
a-h ; he owes a large sum to the
servants lie has under him, and
he finds it dithcult to pay them,
but not so difficult as it the sum
was larger, a-h. The réason
why it is so hard for him to pay
is, because he is not able, a-h; for
the tex says., #but it is easier to
pay a large sum than itis a larger
vne, and it is easier ‘o pay
any sui when we arc able than
it 1s to pay it before we are able,
a-h.’
My Bictheerin.—There is a
1
- great work before us; four mil-
lions of our race arc under the
galling bonds of slavery-—under
the lash of the cruel taskmaster
a-h. These slaves, my breetherin
must be set free at whatever cost
we must contribute our money,
further this great cause, a-h, and
while le are slowly gliding down
the stream of Time—while our
-days are fust lengthing out, and
our lives are fast ebbing away,
we will never see property stare
us in the face for this noble act
done to fellow citizens, a-h.
~My Breetherin—You will find
that the butternut Secesh Democ-
racy will oppose this scheme of
emanecipaiion,for they are possess-
ed of - the devil, a-h. Their cry
is the Union and the Constitution
but. my breetherin, we all know
that “the eonstitution ‘is a coven-
-
fa i a ER A rr SI A A
enant with death and a league
with hell ;’ and we all know that
itis a dangerous document in
time of war, and should le fold-
ed up and laid aside, a-h.
My Breetherin—\We will send
these secesh democrats to Fort
Lafayette, confiscate ther estates
to pay our debts, a-h for the tex
says: ‘But itis easierto pay a
large sum than it is a larger one,
and it iscasier tor pay any sum
when we are able, than it is to
pay before we are able, a-h.
Lovin Lescues.—A Loyal Na-
tional League was formed lately
at Orange, New Jersey, under
two printed sections, one declar-
ing who were members, and the
other pledging them to uncondi-
tional loyalty. To these the fol-
lowing section was added:
«It is hereby understood and
agreed among the ciitzens signing
this constitution that we donot in
any manner pledge ourselves to
any course of united political ac-
tion, but that each member is left
free to act, in all elections, in ac-
corlance with his political pre-
ferences—our only object in this
support the National Government
in its efforts to suppress the rebel
lion now waged against its au-
thority by ¢ porticn of the people
of the Union, and not to organ-
ize or create a political party—it
being the purpose of the members
of the Le:gue to dissolve when
the ol jects for which it was cre-
ated have beed accomplished.
| This addition would seem to be
{entirely proper if these Leagues
are to be used for patriotic r ther
than partisan purposes; but we
observe that the New York Eve-
ning Post considers that the acute
| and ecnecientious gentleman who
{moved this. amendment has
ught to “neutralize the whole
sirair.
(
EZ&=The Abolition organs fail
to quote the following extract
from Jonx Vax DBuroN’s war
speech. He speaks thus of the
Republican party: :
"«Tagree they areunwise, I
agree they arestupid. I agree
they have united the South, and
that they have divided the North.
1 agree to another thing, and you
won’t expect me asa Democrat
to find fanlt with that—I agree
that they prostrated the Repub-
lican party in every non-slave-
holding State of this Confederacy
and gave the Democrats the as-
cendency,and nobody will expect
me to find fault with them on
that account, New York, Penn-
sylvania, Ohio, Indiana, became
Demceratic as the result of them
and I am not the man to find
fault with that.
They Won't Fight. ’
The negroes, like the Aboli-
tionists, will not fight. They
selves in the way of rebel bul-
lets. In Pittsburg, Harrisburg,
and various other places, the
Abolitionists have Leen making
herculan efforts to enlist negro
regiments in the present war,
which dates from Jan.1,1863,but
so far, have most signally failed.
Mr. Lincoln ought to make them
flght, by forthwith drafting them
that is, if he could get anybody
to do the drafting.—We know
that some of the «Old Joker’s
partizans are at all times ready |
to draft white men—especially if
they can enrich themselves and
friends by so doing—bhut, they
would not ‘seperate families,” by
drafting Sambo. Ah, no, that
would not lacerate their tender
and philanthropic hearts, This
last Congress provided for negro
soldiers, but made mo provision
to draft them, A negro may go
to war or stay at home, just as it
suits him ; but the white man
Must go, that is if he is too poor
to pay three hundred dollars into
Mr. Lineuln’s treasury. Can’t
coax the darkies to fight, and
there is no law to force them to
do it. This is a fair specimen of
Republican legislation. :
The Tax-Payers Manual has
just been published, and, in brev-
ity, it beats the Military Manual
all hollow. It has but three prin-
cipal orders,which are as follows:

THE UNLUCKY COLD
To shaw what misery from a cold,
(Though ’tis in the head) may grow,
Young Perrigrues did unfold -
To us this story of his woe : —
«I wooed a lady, Joung and fair,
And half engaged we were to wed ;
But ah! I caught from keen Marce air
A cold distressing, in my head.
+t My reddened eyes streamed down with tears
* However vlesant was my task; i
My nese most Lottle-like appears, i
My voice seems smothered in a cask. i
“I knew that 1 this wretched plight
My looks wou | quite repulsive seem;
And si [ kept m (rom thesight
Of her who wus 1y nightly dream.
« Another fellow se ed'the chance,
While I from Lucy stayed away,
And did so well his suit advance
That she has named the bridal day.
